Wigan Athletic - her played over 100 games for them before he went to Everton.

Were they in the same division as us then? I thought we waved them goodbye some years ago.

No - he waved to the Brentford fans on their way to the Premiership, specifically when they beat us 2-0 away on the 12th April 2003.

Blimey. Had forgotten how recent their rise to the top was. I hope, for England's sake, that Baines and Jagielka are not rooted to the floor like they were for Gary Alexander's gazelle-like leap at GP in the league cup.

Who did Baines play a league game for? He may have played in the League Cup tie I suppose as did Jagielka. Can't remember if Howard was in goal that night.

No he was on the bench

By the same stretch, hope Jagielka isn't on pennos.

In 1978 holland made the final in Argentina - that game was the one that made the most impression on me and I went from liking football to loving it - subsequently started to go to brentford!

Oh, the irony

Got 8 more teams to sell in work sweepstake. Im taking the last one and Brazil are still there! Please! Not such an easy sell where I am even at £3 a team, as im 1 of 2 men in a building of 75 ! To help i do flags for everyone to stick on the top of their computer screens, that often swings it!

Sold all the teams, I now have a Romanian woman supporting Algeria opposite me, and quite vocal bout it too. An American excited about supporting Nigeria. Two managers sat next to each other backing the US and Iran. Someone backing Russia and has since encroached on her colleague's desk. Although I didnt get Brazil, a struggling single mum was keen to get involved and pulled Brazil out, so im rather chuffed for her. Whereas I got the last ticket which was Switzerland. So will be taking in emmental and gruyere one week and chocolate the next with a picture of Urusula Andress on the wall next to me!

Absolutely shocking. Not just the production and the sound that was awful but i think my 8 year old daughter has come up with more interesting and imaginative shows in our lounge. No wonder the stadium was half empty.

Hope Brazil get knocked out in the group stages and the country destroys all FIFA related stuff

Well done to ITV for reporting the protests too as part of their coverage.

Although it was slightly contradictory to there earlier piece on the England players during which the said the country had really caught the World Cup bug

Would be very entertaining to see Brazil fail to win today. Won['t happen though- 2-0 nailed on.

You know what, you look forward to it so much and I even started a thread on it, and then you just get let down like that. Cheating, appalling refereeing, action replays that only show Brasil and Andy ****in Townsend talking *****.

I really feel for Croatia tonight, they have been turned over badly by what can only be a FIFA "bunged" ref who can not afford to see Brasil go out early doors as the whole country will go into complete melt down, or is so far out of his depth he can not see any further than "Brasil, WC winners 5 times, therefore they must get every decision"

Truly shocking, I hardly think Croatia got a decision all night.

Brasil are hardly the first team to look less than impressive in their first game but the good news is they ain't gonna win it. I think they are the weakest Brasil side can remember to be honest, defence is worse than Englands. They have a few tricky players in the middle and up front but without the ref they are not going to beat the Spains and the argentina's....IMO of course.

Did Neymar look better than the Ox tonight, IMO, not really.

Before this match I had them as favourites. Think Germany could do it now. Worth a bet????

Another reason for England to finish 2nd in Group D. Round of 16 match at base in Rio (not scorchio Recife) and not on a school night , then quarter final versus Brazil instead of Spain.

.

Another World Cup another appalling decision. I thought the Ref was blowing up to give the Brazil player a yellow card for diving - what a disgrace to give a penalty. Once again the decision goes in favour of the "big" team at the expense of the smaller team.

It's way beyond time to introduce video replays. It's disgusting that the 1 Billion people watching the game knew it wasn't a penalty within a minute of it happening, and the guy who made the decision didn't.

It's ruining the beautiful game. The referee needs help, these modern players are too good at fooling them.

Video replay for all Penalties and Sending offs as they have too big an impact on the game to not make sure they are right.

Thought it was great the way the ref let the wall line up for free kicks then sprayed on the paint.

A couple of times he actually painted around the toes of players who'd moved forward slightly...

Surely it would make more sense to pace out the 10 yards, spray the line and then make sure the players stand behind?

You are losing credibility daily here mate. Were Germany one of the top three teams you could see past as an arbing opp? If not you need to extend that strategy out.

The Japs in Tenko were fairer than the ref last night

Unfortunately the game might have set the tone for the tournament, seems diving and conning the ref is OK so expect more of it.

Scolari could at least have been a bit gracious and admit is was a harsh decison on Croatia but to say he has seen it 10 times and it is penalty every time is a poor show given they are the host nation. I hope for Brazil what goes around comes around.

The games tonight will see if this theme continues.

May even be as bad as the host-favouritism that was seen in SK

Somebody in my office has just asked in all seriousness why England and Italy are in the same group as they are both good and shouldn't all the not so good teams be in groups together

The World Cup Thread

I am afraid it suits FIFA that Brasil stay in the competition as it lessons the intense political situation in Brasil and enables the crooks to save face in regard to their decision and appeasing their sponsors. For that reason I expect more of the same. The over rated haircut however turned his ankle training last week and then turned it again before the game yesterday, I have a feeling he will struggle to get through the succession of games especially if someone gives him a nudge, hopefully will make up for the ban he should have received for the elbow.

The World Cup Thread

When the Croatia defender Dejan Lovren complains about the ref and then says ""I cannot blame Fred at all. Everyone tries it on. Like it or not, this is part and parcel of football." I despair for the game. It's called cheating. It's not acceptable. Professional footballers and managers should be ashamed of themselves for actively encouraging cheating.

..............two tight disallowed goals for Mexico............

Second one wasn't so much tight as technically wrong. The ref should have overruled the lino as he was better placed to see that the touch before the goal was by a defender.
