Not sure that would have helped. We completely lost it as a team second half and as a result our game went totally to pot. It was frustrating but we needed to try and rise above it and play our game instead we got sucked into a battle with both Bristol and the ref and that played into their hands. Won't have gone unnoticed that that has worked for both Bristol and Birmingham recently. I think there's nothing wrong with the Head Coach being calm, it's a positive for me (as it was for Smith mostly), as you say though a couple of assistants to do the dirty work would be good..

Smith was calm but he wasn’t afraid to get in the fourth official and assistant ref’s ear. TF is obviously a brilliant tactician but it was always clear that where we were going to miss DS this most was his man management skills.

The recruitment of TF’s assistants appears to me to be almost as crucial as the head coach appointment.

Time to go Frank out

From what I saw from the New Road for the first year and well into the second year, Dean Smith wasn’t very animated and didn’t challenge the 4 th official. I’ve noticed a difference this year. Maybe others like young doovster who sit near the dugouts who have a better view can confirm or deny.

Frank will be thinking tonight this wasn’t in the script. Losing 0-1 at home in your first game will keep him awake tonight.
But he didn’t do a lot wrong.
Good signs
Changing it at halftime when 0-0 - the midfield was looking limp and lifeless and Mokotjo was a good swap for Josh.
Keeping two up when down to 10 - telling Maupay and Watkins to swap and change to keep the game in the balance.

Things to work on.
Late minute set pieces - we are really vulnerable Leeds and today overload not switched on ends up costing us 3 points in last two games.
Composure - Thomas is Mr Cool on the sidelines - but the team have a weakness - one lose their head the rest follow suit.
We are picking up easy naive yellows - blame all the referees but there is a trend that no one especially the opposition can not miss - we lose our cool we stop playing football, Forest tried it, Reading nearly got there, Brum were on track and Brizzle read the book as well and got the points.

Maupay regardless of what the referee was doing was heading towards a red after getting a warning then a yellow all in two minutes, Frank needs to get in his ear and the teams ear this week, think smart, be hard but be cool.
Today we were tough but Brizzle played us like a fiddle in getting under our skin and Frank will end up having a sleepless night.
Good Head Coaches are good Coaches but to succeed you need to have the luck as well. Frank got none today.

TF was cool and smart enough on the sidelines today. He needs the team to do likewise on Wednesday.

Thomas Frank

I seriously doubt chating with the 4th official will change the ref's mind.

Thomas Frank

............lovely hair and a nice suit.............top man............

Thomas Frank

An excellent, detailed coach and largely responsible for our attractive style of play.

But his job is now more about man management, picking the team, making subs, final decisions, facing the media etc. He’s got to convince us all he’s up to that.

His previous roles were in youth football and then his only other spell as a senior head coach was at Brondby, and that ended on a pretty sour note.

Not sure he is responsible for the defeat yesterday but Dean Smith probably drops McEachran from the start and that gives us another option on the bench later in the game.

I would also guess Jeanvier and Sorensen are both injured otherwise a poor decision not to have at least one on the bench.

Thomas Frank

I do wonder how much people actually know about Frank as a coach and how much people have just heard a good word and decided he's this that and the other lol

I'm sure we'll improve on today, still just 3 points off the play offs after a fairly disappointing run of form. We'll be back at it in no time I'm sure.

Dean had been far more vocal this season with officials and really tried to ensure we got protected and certainly highlighted the persistent fouling and time wasting that many teams have adopted against us this season.

Fat lot of good it did though eh.
Sh*t officials are sh*t officials.

I like the fact we are a team and look after each other but we need to be smarter.
When we get roughed up or played by the oppo we need to pick our time to even things up.
Sawyers was silly, he was fouled and it was pathetic that neither the Lino who Sawyers was shoved into or the ref who was very close didn’t make the right decision. However, seeing red mist and lashing out as he did is naive and a red waiting to happen.
There were too many of those yesterday and a wise head out there would have taken charge, Sawyers was the one who lost it and he was supposed to be our captain?

It's not gonna change sh1t officials but constantly highlighting the dark arts to the 4th to make the sh1t official in the middle a little more aware of some of the stuff going on must help. Yesterday there was far more dialogue between the 4th and City's bench than the dialogue between the 4th and our bench. How on earth City didn't pick up a single yellow in that first half for committing the volume of fouls they did is beyond me. How we were then deemed to make a foul challenge everytime we made a tackle and also picked up the yellows to boot is beyond me.

I agree that sh1t officials are sh1t officials but game management seems to happen both on the pitch and from the dugout these days.

Smith would more than likely have started with the same line up. It’s the one he’s used most at home so far. Frank went with a proven line up with no major tactical changes. We’ll need to wait a while to see what he brings to the table that’s different to Smith, be it good or bad. Yesterday was a classic Dean Smith style performance

It's less than 6 months ago I read some on here complaining that Dean was too laid back and stood motionless with his hands in his pockets when he should be more animated?

I think there had been a marked difference this season though and I'd go so far as to say that until Saturday more borderline decisions had gone for us than against us, as evidence by two red cards being overturned.

As I said, TF was clearly the man pulling the strings with regards to style and tactics but the players seemed to hugely respect DS so we need to make sure that the man management bit is covered as well.

Marvellous, we've got a lovely bloke, I'd rather read he was screaming expletives at Ollie to work harder off the ball, to move his marker around and create space for the ball players to play him in!Polite, over friendly, touchy feely figures of authority are usually Scout masters, swimming instructors or 70's Radio 1 disc jockeys.

I thought that Jeanvier was one of the subs but that he decided to move Barbet to centre half and bring on Moses, but you're right that Jeanvier wasn't in the squad. Hopefully he or Sorensen will be available for Wednesday, Otherwise we'll have no sub centre half!

We should have bought Andy Scott back, and Neil Warnock wasn't available, ah well looks like those bloomin DOF''s have screwed up again ! ;)

I have refereed at nationwide conference level and I can tell you that what is said to the 4th official (and I have been that person also) makes not one iota of difference to the referee. You are aware of what the players are saying and occasionally if you are near the bench at a stoppage might pick up a remark from the manager or coach but that is it. An aggressive 'in your face' captain or similar dominant player might have a little effect, but not much more.

Yep the fact that he took the time to shake the hand of every single parent and speak to every child suggested to me he is well versed in Man Management backed up his warm, intelligent and articulate words - probably has a better command of the English language than Brummy Smith anyway;).

I've been lucky enough to have a couple of decent football related conversations with the man and have been tremendously impressed by his knowledge and thinking on the game and attention to detail. He talked me through the tactical analysis carried out after the Mepham/Bentley faux-pas against Stoke and I must admit I was gob-smacked by the detail into which he went, conclusions reached and corrective actions taken. He made some very interesting observations about improvements he has made to certain players since he has arrived and this is borne out by performances on the pitch. I got the impression of an urbane and deep thinking footballing man but highly focused and capable of making singular and difficult decisions when needed.

I don't think he will rant and rave on the touchline or be particularly animated although I wouldn't confuse that with a lack of passion. I think a No.2 who can convey that type of urgency when required would be in order. Not sure how people are reaching a number of conclusions following Saturdays defeat against Bristol City, it was an unusual game in many ways poor ref, oppo were half decent and we had 3-4 players well below form - we still had enough to have got something out of the game.

I believe Frank will be a good appointment by the club and he should be accorded the honeymoon period afforded to any new manager regardless of very much being integral to the old regime.

If you get time, and don't mind, could you go into more detail on any of that? Would be interesting.

I trust most Bees fans are reasonably happy with the appointment, he has a very good pedigree, is well thought of thought of as well as liked by virtually everyone on the staff and so hope he gets the support he deserves from us the fans. I've no doubt he'll get it from the owner regardless of how quickly we overcome this latest, sticky patch.

I'm sure he will make a good Championship manager in time …. whether he is the man to take us to the next level remains to be seen. Think if he fails with us, he will be favourite to be the next Dr Who !

Thomas Frank

Very good presser from Thomas today ahead of Preston game. Certainly says all the right things. Let’s hope he’s not another Leroy!!

Thomas Frank

There’s zero easy games in this division

I was referring to more of the same opposition spoiling tactics and antifootball as we have witnessed in the last three home games that has led us to abandoning our football, multi bookings and very few points for our efforts

Thomas Frank

He is such a good speaker. Really want him to succeed and get assistants that complement his style.

Thomas Frank

Last season i criticised Smith for focusing on the officials more than our players. I hope TF gets the balance right. Might take a little time.

Thomas Frank

Just seen his press conference. He will go down as our best manager head coach ever. No question about it. TF will be managing in the premier within 2 years, i hope with us.

Thomas Frank

Zero comparison with Leroy, don’t they all say the right thing.

It was just a tongue in cheek comment. I just remember vividly that Leroy always seemed to hit the nail on the head in the post game interviews. Seemed to know exactly what had gone wrong and why and explained it quite eloquently. Just never seemed to be able to rectify it. In his defence I think he must have had close to the lowest relative budget of any manager that I can remember..

Thomas Frank I think clearly knows his stuff, let's just hope he can translate that onto on the pitch success. I reckon he can..

Thomas Frank

Just watched his pre Preston press conference on YouTube and quite liked his answer to a question about fans attending games when they can watch it on TV

His reply was WHEN we get to the Premier league every game is on tv but we will need our fans. It was just a throw away comment really but I liked his confidence that we will be promoted not might be, something I have not heard from others who always have put an “ if” in front

we stood up to Millwall last year at home, really battled with them and will need similar this time round

Thomas Frank

I loved the way Josh said he hopes his son will be coming to a family day at Brentford in a few years time - just count those flying pigs!

Thomas Frank

He (McE) was a lot less animated/interesting to listen to than I expected. Then again so's David Beckham. Perhaps that's the trade off for having all the magic in your feet.

Thomas Frank

Not sure if he is the brightest tool in the box and is maybe a bit shy - or just careful
