Franks basically abandoning our identity to save his bacon

I wouldn't say there's been much difference in playing style, for all that we've adopted three-at-the-back as the defensive formation. The fact is that a number of our players have been out of sorts these past several weeks. Our out of sorts full back pairing of Dalsgaard-Barbet was leaking soft goals. That has been fixed with Odubajo-Henry, and yesterday the improvement was clearly visible. Two of our key midfielders, MacEachran and Watkins, have been out of sorts; the former is no longer a first team starter and the latter is perhaps living on borrowed time, retained for his goal-scoring potential but with Canos breathing down his neck. Yesterday's starting line-up may have been reconfigured compared with how we started the season, but the playing philosophy remains much the same, and long may it do so. I'm confident the team's results will improve.

Believe that Frank is much more of a strict disciplinarian than Smith and that it’s taking some of the squad a bit longer than others to acclimatise to the change...not sure if that’s good news or bad news...however my personal view on adapting the formation is that this is atleast a positive step for us mid to long term!

Thought about it some more.

People complained there was no plan B. He switches things around and people still aren't happy.

Id go back to raving Channel 4 news if i was you

Interesting to smith starting to have a few defensive issues at villa..

That thought did cross my mind....but in reality I think that's been their weakest area for a while (and previously were just not getting the best out of their plethora of midfield and attacking options).

Thomas Frank

Let's be honest, three points were much needed, and you can only beat what's in front of you, but in terms of reading a lot into it we'll probably know a lot more after the Bristol game rather than a poor Bolton side.

I could be wrong but I really can't see him as a disciplinarian, but perhaps he is a bit more detailed and pernickety about what he wants from them, which has led to some confusion. Speaking in a second language can't help, so hopefully KO’C will make a difference. Good signs on Saturday.

At the moment they think that Smith is a flawless saviour. We know that he is a very good head coach but has deficiencies which will make themselves just as clear at Villa Park as here. Still expect them to comfortably make the top six though.

It’s hardly a ‘second language’ in the way that English is for Maupay for example. Scandinavians generally speak excellent English. I don’t see any issues there.

From his interviews I think his English is OK, but that he could struggle to explain complex ideas. He is nowhere near as fluent as Rasmus, for example.

In 3 months time PetPassports become invalid in Europe with a hard Brexit. Surely all the Euro registered players will get kicked out too?

Rasmus is like one of those blokes who does the “entertainment” at a foreign all inclusive holiday resort who does the bingo in 5 languages. If you weren’t told his nationality you wouldn’t guess it. Generic European and almost perfect English.

More like players fail to understand. Considering American footballers and even rugby players in line outs remember multiple "plays" I fail to understand why professional footballers have trouble adapting to different formations. Why not learn every possible combination and change it around during a game.

Who do you think we are? I'm well happy with 3 points and we kept it on the deck... it's not beginning of the season good but a start. Imagine that side on form, on paper it may be one of the best we've ever had! Chin up

Made the gamble of changing formations and we got 3 points (albeit against a poor team). Think it mostly worked - at least going forward - but we panicked at the back in the last 10 minutes and I'm not sure how Kamo and Romaine would cope with a decent side playing 3 CM

Doubt TF will pick the same starting X1 for Brizzle ?

In the often quoted words of the late George Sands "One swallow does not a summer make" TF has a lot more work to do....

If we can do it right and our previous full backs learn the role, playing 4 across the midfield will cope with a decent midfield 3.

Play another in midfield and just Ollie or SIad slightly behind Maupay?

Who?

Yennaris (waiting for his flight to China), Macleod (injured), Marcondes (injured), McEachran? Okay, that leaves Dasilva who everyone on here thinks is the messiah and yet those who watch him in training every day believe he isn’t ready yet.

So, who? That lack of quality midfield options is one of the reasons we’ve gone for three at the back.

For me the main reason was to try and help cut out the supply of crosses and to be able to deal with that better. I’m not so sure he’s as concerned about the midfield as others though the loss of Marcondes is significant I feel..

Frank said that he may well revert to 4-3-3 and I would not be at all surprised to see that over the next few games especially with Mepham likely to be out.

Why would he change back to 4-3-3 when at least we looked like a unit vs Bolton? OK Bolton weren't that good but IMO they weren't as bad as some have been saying. They were pretty tight at the back and posed a threat at set pieces. In that respect they were similar to quite a few teams.IMO Barbet can slot in for Mepham if needed. One of the issues with 4-3-3:was that we had major gaps defensively on either flank and at least we didn't look as weak in that area with the new system.
We shall see how the next 3 games work out.

I think the answer is in the post you're replying to. I really wouldn't want to see Barbet there, he's got no positional discipline.

IMO he's underrated as a CB. When he has played there his performances have generally been good and there have been plenty of cock ups by others in that position which seem to be forgotten.

It’s a toss up really. Not convinced by Barbet at CB and he won’t have had much time to work on playing in a 3.. against a side with more attacking intent we could well find ourselves pushed back and the 3-5-2 rapidly becomes 5-2-3 with no way out.. I wouldn’t fancy our chances defending for a whole game, we need to get at teams as we’re still decent going forward and can cause any team problems if we play at the right tempo

Although you’ve turned into a right old misery lately, you’re right about Josh Da Silva. I think some of us are praying and want to believe he lives up to the hype without having seen enough of him. :fishing:

The only games at CB in the last year, as far as I can recall, were against Barnsley and PNE and he was unbelievably awful in both.

I seem to recall that he had a decent run at CB last year but lost his place. Maybe l'm having a senior moment. He had some poor games at full back though.

He had a good run alongside HD, but that was at least two seasons ago. He has had a long run at left back, he would need a few at CB to remember what he was doing. The trouble is that means a possible mistake laden run. However three at back may help the transition.

TF certainly enjoyed the victory over Bolton, with his post match celebrations, and the crowd responded.

Thomas Frank

Maybe Bolton was his road to Damascus momemt and its just the beginning of the road to the promised land, there's no way he should leave just yet as clearly his work here is not done.

Maybe, but I think the 3 wise men (DoFs + MB) will have the final say on that.

Thomas Frank

Glad TF got a break before Christmas. Happy Yule Thomas!

I agree - hopefully it lifted some pressure of the poor bloke's shoulders so he could at least enjoy his Christmas, to some extent.

Realistically, it's just prolonged the agony for everyone involved and we'll still have just twenty five points on Jan 2nd, with a very banana skin-like cup tie three days later.... all IMHO, of course.

The immediate future is far from bright.
