I know Arry will say it is good business as he, sorry they have made £5m on the deal, but where are they getting all the money from again?

I hope Robbie's got an exit-clause for the event of Tottenham's relegation to the Championship... Perhaps then Wolves could then pick him up for £5m? :)

They do have a man almost as rich as Abramovich used to be, in tax exile called Joe Lewis. Who I believe funds quite a bit to the club.

How stupid is this. Wilson Palacios signs for Spurs from Wigan just after receiving his 10th booking of the season thus having to serve a 2 match ban. He missed the FA Cup match against Man Utd as he was cup-tied & then the league game against Stoke last Tuesday. Incredibly although cup-tied from the Man Utd game the FA have decided this counts towards his ban & therefore he was eligible to play against Bolton on Saturday. Confused ??? yep me too :confused:

they spent a hell of a lot of money on Palacios who had one season that could have been good but I dont really follow Wigan, my moneys on another big money gamble tha will ultimately fail

never saw him at wigan, seen him twice now for Spurs and he looks a quality player :eek:

Robbie Keane was the organiser apparently. Probably thought nobody in Dublin would recognise the national team's captain and all time record goalscorer.

To be honest, 'Arry is a miserable ****, or that's at least how he always comes across to me on the tele. Considering how well Spurs have done this season, he should have been less of a scrooge and allowed a party. But the team should have a bit of respect for him, as no other manager is going to do as well with that set of players.

Some cracking saves my Gomes last night especially the volley from Van Persie and a great wonder strike by young Danny Rose!

Campbell was the best player for Arsenal last night but everyone else fell apart. According to Alan Smith last night it looks like they will sign the Bordeaux forward Marouane Chamakh on a free but they could do with another defender especially as Sagna has also been ropey.

Agree that, surprisingly, Campbell was Arsenal's best player last night.

I believe that AW has made some mistakes but it struck me last night that no-one, however biased, could dispute that Arsenal are a big club. Yet if you compare the cost of the players on the field last night, or even the squads, I believe that Spurs would have cost far more.

That could be one of Wenger's mistakes mind you, but I still think that he has adone and is doing a fabulous job. To build a new stadium & keep the team as competitive as it is, at the same time as maintaining financial viability is incredible and, remember, they were competing on level terms at the top of the P'Ship in a 38k stadium before that.

Arsenal rarely pay more that £10-11m for a player. Chelsea rarely pay less than that &, in fact, pay more than that for fullbacks!! If Arsenal do invest big time - probably 3/4 players - in the summer they could well win the title, & if they do they would be well placed to repeat the success in the future.

I have a feeling that AW will want to invest that money - perhaps to secure his legacy - but it will be interesting to see how much he maintains his frugal policy. Chamakh seems to have been signed already & that is a free xfer signing of a highly-rated player in his mid-20s - looks like good business to me. Sagna looks to be on the way out to be replaced by Mexes - net zero or very little outlay? A top class gk, a big centre back and another striker would probly cost £30-40m but Arsenal could probably afford that. Mind you, it would be great if they could sign a Villa for instance although a one-club man moving from Spain would be a risk & AW doesn't take too many (none, in fact) of them where £25m or more is involved.

It is strength in depth that has cost Arsenal.

They have spent too much of the season without Galls, Vermalen, Clichy, Song, Fabregas, van Persie and Arshavin.
They simply do not have the strength in reserve to cope with it and have lost ground.

You could say the same about Man Utd, who did not look as strong without Ferdinand and Vidic and look lost without Rooney, while Chelsea have found a way to play without Drogba and have coped without Carvalho, Cole, Ivanovic, Cech, Essien, Joe Cole etc.

If Arsenal can keep their first team fit for longer and get some better back up they could bridge the gap but I expect Chelsea to be stronger next year so there might be a bigger gap to bridge.

Agree, but that is why I said 'add' 3-4 players. I would also contend that Arsenal have competed well with those other clubs - the gap in points terms bears that out - & that overall, in the longer term, they have probably gained ground.

Btw, you have not mentioned Djourou (sp), Gibbs or Ramsey & it certainly could be argued that Arsenal have had the most significant injury problems of all the top clubs. I would also add in the injury list, Rosicky & Eduardo, who have had great trouble getting back to their previous levels.

The point I was making is the quality of the job that AW has done in a very frugal way. It will be interesting to see how Chelsea & ManU do over the coming seasons. Chelsea are an aging squad with probably 2 seasons left from their current squad & ManU are similar in some respects. Their owners do not seem so keen to spend the sort of fees that they have paid in the past, so new players may not be so immediately 'world class'.

There are some younger players coming through at ManU and not so many at Chelsea. Arsenal have a number & if they do add players who are both top-class & a little different to those they have, I believe they could become a formidable outfit.

Indeed. It will also be interesting when Ferguson retires - as if that coincides with a period when the Glazers still aren't willing to spend, and the squad is not significantly changed from the moment I can see it being even more of a difficult job than just following Ferguson is going to be anyway.
