First, let's get one thing right: We did have some efforts at goal, though possibly none on target! Bostock very nearly scored with an excellent free kick in the first half, and Charlie Mac came close to tucking one away in the second. Having said that, for the most part it was an uninspiring performance. The first half was even with few clear chances. Szczesny looked as good a goalkeeper as I've seen at this level, commanding his area well and getting out quickly on a couple of occasions. Whether he was at all at fault for their goal was hard to say from so far away, but basically our defenders were caught napping. They shouldn't have been. It was very clear from early on that Curran was a useful player who needed to be watched closely. Tranmere's no. 2, Logan, was also pretty good. For us it was a familiar story: no (and I mean zero) creativity from central midfield. KOC didn't even do well what he's meant to be good at, and gave the ball away needlessly on several occasions. Bean was a bit better, but distinctly average by Div 1 standards. Up front, Charlie Mac buzzed around and looked moderately dangerous, but Strevens was anonymous. Perhaps he has played better in other games, but on this form it's very hard to see how he's keeping Carl Cort out of the team. Predictably, Wood and Dickson combined to good effect down the left. Several times it looked as though they might fashion an opening, but in the end it always came to nothing. The right-hand side, however, is another problem. I can't really see how Danny Foster is an improvement on either Halls or Newton; in fact, he offers less going forward. Bostock clearly has a bright future, and occasionally threatened to produce something, but he is also raw and very left footed. It's not ideal for a right winger (but then, he isn't really a right winger, is he?). Legge did well again, and Pim B was reasonable. This was a disappointing result against a largely mediocre side, but there will be more until we do something to improve our threat going forward, and to my mind that means a new midfield.
