Underwhelmed

Not a single player left in the tournament has ever won the World Cup before.

Thanks, bye.

Underwhelmed

Turning out to be the best World Cup in my living memory. The worst part of the World Cup was last Friday when there wasn’t any game played.

Underwhelmed

Potentially the wrongest thread title in gpg history!

Underwhelmed

There have been some good games, some interesting ones and a few rubbish but overall a good football tournament.

The downside are:
1. the players who roll around as if shot when hardly touched
2. Waving of fictitious cards at the ref to try to get fellow professionals booked
3. Rough house treatment by certain countries
4. VAR. What a ridiculous system which ignores blatant fouls in the area - the worst by two Swiss players (one in front one behind) who wrestled a Croatian (?) to the ground but it was ignored. Henderson last night - it was either a red or no card but presumably the adjudicator told the ref yellow as he, presumably, did not see it.

All in all a better tournament than expected! I might even buy an England shirt!

Underwhelmed

this thread title is fantastic lol lol lol

best world cup EVER !!!

Was working cleaning the bar by the Royal box in 1966. Able to sit on the steps during games. That was the best...........so far !!!!

well done Russia? maybe we should give them another one?

i'm lucky enough to follow some nice Russian girls on Instagram  and their posts of daily life in Russia look great. i know the country has been demonised to an extent in our media, but maybe it's not that bad :)

mind you, there's still time for something to go horribly wrong................

No football for the next two nights. Guess I have to speak to my wife tonight ...

I will if you want #selfless

I posted in advance that it would be sterile because Putin and the military would control their fans and any one entering that would mean hardly any real fans would visit.
What appears to have happened is lots of supporters from countries you wouldn't associate with football fan culture seemingly enjoying themselves and making lots of noise and having fun while virtually no fans from recognised footballing nations trying to enhance their reputations.
Focus has been on the football and genuine integrating into the community and engaging with the very friendly locals according to the sensible, mature England fans I know who have been or are out there.
Have to say, it sounds like it would have been incredibly boring to a younger, pain in the wotsit, immature Sonofabee but wish I'd been there lol

It just gets worse and worse, no game until Friday now and FOUR whole days without matches next week.

Perhaps they ought to do as they used to in Olympic hockey and have placement matches for all the teams. Not sure the 31st v 32nd play off would be that appealing mind you.

I am underwhelmed by a visit to Southampton University on Saturday which means I shall miss the game. :(

I don’t think so, sadly for the people of Russia. It’s all for show and once the World Cup is over it’ll go back to exactly how it was before...no drinking/gathering in public places etc.

As for keeping to topic, this World Cup has been fantastic. Loved almost every minute - just a shame it’ll end in 10 days’ time.

What does it for me is that all these pre season Bees videos that are coming out, I just don't care. Normally I'd be all over them, but now it's just "that can all wait".

Yep. I think even Mr Drone is suffering from that syndrome now.

No segregation and no trouble. So much colour and lovely ladies and lots of kids.

Russia V England in the semi....hmmmmmm

Was suppose to be going to Cardiff tomorrow and watch T20 match between India and England but going to give it a miss as two cracking quarter finals matches tomorrow.

The first time the word "underwhelmed" was coined, some time in the late seventies, it was mildly witty.

When first coined in the late 1940's it was really witty!!!!

It still is a very good adjective as descriptive words are basically key Words and Phrases that help paint a clear picture and tell a story about something, Descriptive words are important as it gives a clear message to the readers and listeners.

It's OK, the previous winners of 4 of the last 5 World Cups went out in the group stage next time round so we can already write 2022 off.

Though I suspect, as with Russia, Qatar will probably pull out all the stops to make the tournament a success despite it not looking like a good host for numerous reasons.

Underwhelmed

have to say that even if the final is crap (which it could be) its been the best world cup ive ever seen for overall interest....the first one I remember was 74 so theres plenty to choose from but this has had quality all the way through and very few rubbish games.......congrats to Russia for putting on a great spectacle......the next one in Qatar will probably be the worst one ever so anything more than that will be a bonus ;)

I though the last world cup was bloody good too, we were toilet but the whole competition was as good as this one. Just a shame FIFA kept Brazil in it far longer than they deserved and allowed far too many reckless challenges go unpunished but they were both brilliant. This was probably pips it for having more underdogs go through.

I think the last World Cup was a bit overrated as it was in Brazil, how many games can people remember apart from the 1-7?

This one has had Spain-Portugal, Germany-Sweden, Belgium-Japan, France-Argentina plus a few others
that were all pretty exciting. I would rate this World Cup up with 1986, which is the best one I have seen.

The best world cup ever was in 2002 as I watched EVERY game in prison. Wasn't expecting that!

It’s what is wrong about our penal system that wrong uns can watch every game if they time their crime and decent law abiding people like me can’t. lol :fishing:

BEST world cup EVER.....VFTB official verdict ;)

:imwith: I'll go with that as well Voice, final is usually an anti climax (exceptions 1966, 1986) and yesterday had everything including a ludicrous "clear and obvious" penalty that the ref took ages to decide on and then made the wrong call. Still as much as I don't like the French, I really dislike the psycho car washers and Rebic particularly even more and the best team did win, after all they beat Belgium on the way.

Underwhelmed

it was rubbish. no ireland or czech republic. booooo. Benham out.

Great World Cup but for me personally, still not as good as Italia '90.

On a separate note, I happened upon the French fans celebrating in Piccadilly yesterday evening. All in good spirit but I can't imagine if it it was the other way round, e..g English fans celebrating in Paris like that it'd have been reported in quite the same way.

This is probably in the wrong thread but as you’ve mentioned “clear and obvious”, I thought I’d raise it here.
Is the use of “clear AND obvious” tautologous? What’s the difference between the two. Looking at some authorities on the subject, an example is given, in a non-football sense, of someone explaining something to me which I then find is clear after hearing that explanation. However, if I say that it’s obvious, I imply that I knew that in the first place and that I didn’t need an explanation. So, in the rules, “clear” doesn’t appear to add anything to “obvious” and in fact just appears to make the issue unclear!

As regards yesterday’s penalty decision, I understand that guidelines to refs. say that in reviewing a video, slow motion should only be used for “point of contact “ offences, such as physical offences and handballs but regular speed should be used to determine whether a handball was deliberate. It didn’t seem to me that the ref followed this advice yesterday as he appeared to view in slowmo a number of times.

Sorry for the length of this, but do others have a different interpretation of “clear and obvious”?

Definitely the best WC I can remember (the first being 1990). There wasn't even a standout team or even teams but we had worthy winners, a cracking run from England and some superb matches. Bring on Euro 2020.

Dunno. Though in another context, one of the more interesting legal commentators on Brexit (yes, I know, no politics on here any more - twitter Davidallengreen if you're interested - even if he is a Villa supporter!) has pointed out that if you need to say something is clear, it is a good sign that it isn't and you're trying to persuade someone that it is. I'd suggest that "obvious" has a similar meaning. You don't need to describe obvious things as being obvious because they are obvious. The whole point of VAR is that it covers stuff that was not clear and obvious to the referee and assistants on the pitch in real time. Adding clear and obvious together points to something being neither.

Underwhelmed

I see these words as quite distinct.

"Clear" means that the language used is unambiguous, succinct and accurate.

"Obvious" requires that the subject matter is adequately simple that it should be possible to come to a conclusion about it intuitively, without too much thought.

If I were reading an instruction manual on how to do brain surgery then I hope it would be clear, but to expect that it was obvious how to proceed is probably asking too much.

Also, "obvious" is highly subjective.
