You should get yourself down to a place called Griffin Park. There's a little club called Brentford FC that plays there. They play some cracking football, the vast majority of matches are pretty exciting and puts most of the World Cup dross to shame. Try it, you may like it.

The two things are mutually exclusive.
I'll wager Brentford will never have a fixture that clashes with the World Cup Finals...

Not watching this Brazil v Costa Rica game, but it looks like another game where the dominant team has to work against an 11 man defence, is this really football for the big stage, it's bad enough at Championship level.

Edit; ok so they did go on to win 2-0 :)

but yes, so true. not sure what to do, but it's not a good time for football at the mo...

really not sure when timewasting, dissent and diving became such an accepted part of the game too. how do the bigwigs at FIFA not see this? surely it needs sorting.

Complete borefest. Considering how much these clowns get paid to play football, there's very little of it being played. Mexico have been the only bright spot. The rest has been a right bag of *****.

What nonsense. Do you actually like football?

Portugal - Spain
Mexico - Germany
Croatia - Argentina
Serbia - Switzerland

All of the above have been great games to watch. There have only been a couple of real turkeys and no 0-0s yet.

You only have to watch the sheer unadulterated joy of Musa when he scored his goals for Nigeria yesterday, and sprinted around like a mad man in celebration to understand why people watch football.

I've watched about half the games and with the exception of the borderline cheat in our game, think the refs have been pretty decent, fairly anonymous and prepared to let the game flow.

I agree. Although imo too light on cards and have seen more c*ntiness as a result.

Maybe watch some WC games from 1962 and 1966 and you’ll have your answer...

Good point. I'm not sure that I do a lot of the time. I do however, support and love Brentford FC, even when they're crap. They are even easier to love in these good times.

Fair enough. I don’t think you’re alone and a lot of people have fallen out of love with the game and only take an interest in their club team.

Personally, I still love it and will watch football from pretty much any level or country when I can.

Loving the World Cup and gutted that we’ll go from 2020 to 2024 without an international summer tournament. Hopefully it won’t happen again.

We will also have the following World Cup with late night kick offs

I have really enjoyed it all so far

The change in pundits has been refreshing as well.

I just switch off when we go to Gabby Logan with news from England Camp

Enjoy watching all teams

well yes, but that was a long time ago. a lot has changed and various efforts made to clean things up. it's crept back in to a ridiculous extent recently :(

Diving, perhaps, though I don’t think it’s any more prevalent than it was eight years ago. I’d say there’s no more of a problem with dissent/time wasting than there has been at any point previously. People just like something to complain about...

i certainly do :D

i don't understand accepting it though. saying it was also a problem eight years ago doesn't mean it's not a problem

Another great day. The Colombia fans were superb and the team was pretty good.

Anyone still underwhelmed?

Nope, I reckon its been a great world cup so far. the first round of games were more entertaining than usual, there have been plenty of goals. A slight absence of absolutely stunning goals so far but I reckon Lingaards today was pretty special. The refs have been good, most are letting the games flow which is helping. All the stadiums look great on TV with good, lively crowds. Definitely one of the better world cups in recent years already.

So far, so good for me.
We’ve looked good going forward and there’s a feel good factor in Surrey helped by the incredible weather as well as results.
Refs have been fairly good albeit far too lenient and good news is that very few undeserving winners of games that I’ve seen to date.
Hardly any bad games that I’ve seen and this weekend a really good set of matches.
It’s going to get tougher but teams won’t look forward to playing us, only disappointing aspect for me has been the commentators and side kicks on both channels. Guy someone, Keown, Sam Matteroffact have been my special hates and I seem to disagree with others as quite like Danny Murphy.

Murphy's fine. Has a good brain and is articulate too. Not sure why he is sounding more and more like a southerner every time I hear him, but that's of no consequence really!

Likewise. I think Murphy is a decent co-commentator, he knows his stuff and is articulate. Light years ahead of Keown and Mark Lawrenson that's for sure.

been excellent so far....some cracking games and England doing the business.....whats not to like ??? could be one of the best WC's ever for many different reasons ;)

Underwhelmed

Seven games on the trot with 3 goals or more in, can't argue with that for consistent entertainment.

Underwhelmed

Been watching the World Cup since 82 and without a doubt the best start to a WC I can remember. The beauty of it I haven’t seen one outstanding team and honestly believe about 6/7 teams can potentially win it. England’s good start makes a difference and would love it if Iran beat Portugal and knocked them out.

Already missing the 1pm games.

Underwhelmed

Love these simultaneous last games of the group!!!
Best part of the tournament I reckon!!!

Underwhelmed

So 36 games played and to date I have watched just 1 the England game on Sunday and even then I had the sound off and listened to the cricket!!

I honestly find little interest in the competition beyond a vicarious enjoyment when one of the fancied teams struggle as over the years my enjoyment has been tempered by the snidey and cheating antics of various countries.

Obviously I want England to do well but as I am working Thursday I won’t see that match and the remainder are of little import.

So I guess that I am pretty much underwhelmed with the competition which from what I can gather is being further diluted with the farce that is VAR

Roll on August when we can have some proper football!!!????

How can you be underwhelmed by something you haven't even watched?

It's actually been quite good.

To clarify, the England Panama game I watched from start to finish, have seen parts of the other games whilst working at the pub.

Guess it’s more an age and cynicism thing as, by and large, I am getting more and more disillusioned with football, particularly the top division and over time have become less interested in these tournaments.

They are advertised as a celebration of football but to me seem more a celebration of cheating and niggling with a system of refereeing that beggars description. Add to this a number of high profile ex footballers stealing a living by pontificating on the matches but generally talking tripe and balderdash!!!

Underwhelmed is perhaps not the correct adjective: disillusioned would be better as far as I am concerned.

Pipe, I have seen you before say things like if Bees get to the Premier league you will give it one season then probably lose interest, and I understand your disillusionment with the game (though not losing interest iin Bees).

I have previously agreed with a lot of what you say regarding modern day football and how it is so alien from what we used to know as football.

However, its the World Cup, its very entertaining, there is a lot of passion, joy, tension, and farce, it really is great entertainment, you are missing out, just enjoy the theatre it is and put aside your disillusionment for a couple more weeks, and enjoy it for what it is.

Ok I will make a real effort and try to watch as much as possible.

Can I come back and be a grumpy old git again afterwards?????????

It was nailed on the worst game so far and virtually guaranteed 0-0 from the second Peru took the lead. There have been hardly any really poor or boring games all tournament but that was a stinker that compares with the Krauts vs Austria game back in 82?

You’re missing out, it’s been the most captivating and exciting WC in recent times. I’ll be controversial here and say that VAR has increased the excitement.

Oh Jeez, literally the worst game of the tournament along with Uruguay Saudi Arabia.

Hopefully you watched the Argies tonight.

it's been fun, but it'll be defined by the knockout stages of course. i've got a feeling some recent world cup was fun in the group stages but then not fondly remembered overall. damned if i know which now, i can barely remember last week...

for your blasphemous VAR comments, you are banished. away with you :nono:

There have been a lot of significant late goals in the group stages which we probably won't see in the knockout phases so much. Keeping on going to get a result right until the end of time added on after 90 minutes was key to Brazil and Germany keeping their tournaments alive (both could be going into the third game of their groups with a real risk of being knocked out if they had only drawn) and was a huge feature of Group B where all four teams had result changing goals between the 88th and 90+5 minutes. In the knockouts we normally see both teams start to hold back and conserve energy around the 85th minute in anticipation of extra time so goals tend to be from breakaway counterattacks and unforced defensive errors. Defensively organised underdogs are more likely to try to hold out for a penalty shoot out in the extra half hour.

EVERY SINGLE one of the Thirty Two teams has scored in this World Cup.

Lovely stuff.

I have really enjoyed the World Cup, maybe it’s because I’m staying in a pub midweek and got to see most evening games and the last group games all have had something to be interested in.
Watched England vs Tunisia with 3,000 fans in pub with big screen in garden in sweltering temperatures and more of the same tomorrow.
Make it through the last 16 and will be watching quarters in Portugal.
Great seeing Germans go out, last minute goals against Sweden keeping them alive, Mexico tearing Germany apart, late drama in Spain / Portugal games, plus the 3-3 draw.
Argentina being 5 mins from being out, Brazil being in trouble vs Costa Rica until injury time, England ripping Panama a new one.

Plenty of other games gone to the wire too.

All good from me.
