Mark, as a BU Board member, what are your thoughts in relation to our Chairman Brian Burgess stating that it is still acceptable for Brentford Football Club to pay agents fees? Has anyone on the BU Board challenged Brian on this subject? What was the outcome if so?

PS -- for anyone that missed this, Brian refused to rule out paying agents fees in the future at the time of the last BU EGM. Notwithstanding that The Football Club intended to introduce a policy that meant we shouldn't pay agents fees...although we can pick and choose when this is used...yep...I left confused as well....lol

It's not been challenged at a board meeting. My own opinion is that it should be used as the very last possible measure to move players on that have been signed on high wages and it would make financial sense to give a finder's fee in view of the saved wages.

The key, of course, is to not sign these type of players in the first place. Overall, I am against agent's fees and my postings on here have been consistent to that effect.

I'm sure abee is delighted that to all intense purposes, his recent £5,000 gift went straight out the backdoor to an agent...

Agreed. If an agent can get someone to take Skulason off our hands, it would be worth paying him a few grand, whatever the official policy.

Fine in theory, but mistakes will always be made.

I wonder how other clubs survive without paying fees...oh yes I forgot...they are professionally run off the field...unlike our muppets who cant even sign the correct documentation for a simple loan/transfer arrangement between BFC and Swindon...

I wonder if you would prefer to pay Skulason at the rate of £2000 a week or whatever for another 24 weeks, or pay an agent £5k or £10k to get him off the wage bill pronto?

I understood it as we would not be paying any more agents' fees, but "it'd be foolish not to pay finders' fees if it's in the best interests of the club"... Not that it makes for any better reading, mind.

Rotherham who are or were in administration and therefore run by professional accounting firm to protect the interest of creditors, paid out
£36K. I would assume that this would have been to get players off their books, so therefore one could argue a more professionally run club, that is looking at making savings actually has to pay agents to assist in making greater savings.
Also the £5K could be a throwback to much earlier deals which could have been instalment based in someway.

There are actually only 5 clubs who havent paid anything in our division and only Bournemouth and Doncaster have paid out less...

I wonder how people would feel if it turned out that refusing to pay out agents fees had cost us a striker we desperately needed to stay up?? :fishing:

Agent fees

I dont believe that agents should be paid by football clubs. If players are too stupid to deal for themselves, let them carry the can.

That contract should never have been signed in the first place, see my previous comments as to muppets working at our club.

I would not pay any agent.

Agent fees

Even if it saved the club £100K in wages. Not very professional. ;)

You and Ed are talking nonsense with made up scenarios. This is the real world and I repeat there is simply not a need for BFC to pay agents should the club be running along professional lines.

I agree that players should foot the bill for agents fees.
However, what about if the agents fee is more beneficial to the club? (ie the £5k agents fee actually saves the club £10k in said players wages!)

Made up scenario's, you are not in the real world. A programme on tv about agents actually pointed out that they were sometimes paid by clubs to get players off their books. Whether that is the case for this £5k I do not know, but bearing in mind the last year was from memory £26K then I would say that significant improvement has been made.

Oh sorry, a TV programme said it was so...how could I be so silly....

Has that actually happened at Brentford? Ever? If so, let the Club point it out and we can form a view from there. Perhaps they could balance it with all the deals where we have paid an agent?

Agent fees

I think Brickie should run the club....he would get rid of all those muppets ruining Brentford and we would be in the Championship in no time.

We would save money on players, and they would be glad to be representing this new agent free club, concentrating only on BFC, whilst the club sorted out their future.

I am hoping he would also crack the whip over the office staff, insist on short haircuts for all at the club. Blazers to be worn on all occasions and no more promotional events that give away free tickets....

(Brickie, can I be your agent for this campaign ?)

I wouldn't know BC. I am not sure whether they could disclose that sort of detailed information due to the data protection act. I guess the question could be asked to the MD, to disclose whether the amount paid actually saved the club money in the long term though.

In this case though it was clearly stated in the article that the £5k was paid out prior to the BFC policy of not paying agents fees, lets all wait for a zero amount in the next agent payments report.... :sorted:
Unless any payment saves the club money in the long run ......

Agent fees

Well yes as it was coming from part of an official report on Agents and many clubs had admitted to the procedure going on (then again nobody but Brickie really knows what happens at every football club).

There is at least one employee at BFC that doesnt give two hoots about the DPA :sorted:

Sorry he is discredited in my eyes...I'd prefer someone whose word I could take at face value

From memory a question was asked at a fans forum a couple of years back and I'm sure it was said that an Agent was used to find Talbot another club, which he did in Boston and was recompensed for his service. :fishing:

But Talbot was the one who wanted to return to the north. Are you saying the club paid an agent because a player wanted a move?

That contract should never have been signed in the first place, see my previous comments as to muppets working at our club.
Of course in the Brickie Chap world, no manager would ever make a mistake in signing a player who didn't turn out to be all that, would he? I mean take a look at the best managers in the country ... Alex Ferguson never wasted a whole pile of cash on Veron, Forlan, Bosnich, etc and Arsene Wenger didn't waste Arsenal's money on Jeffers, Luzhny, etc. If even the very best managers in the business can make mistakes with signing players, are you seriously going to suggest that Brentford can avoid doing so?

He was still under contract for another year and if he hadn't found another club he would of had to stay in the South despite his wishes. :fishing:

So he should have got his own wallet out instead of BFC's. I know there are examples where we could make savings using agents but this is a really bad example.

So are you saying it has NEVER happened at any club, because an agent or so that you know has told you?
Whereas if its in black and white in a clubs accounts and records and noted as such in an official enquiry, it didn't happen?

Agent fees

I know there are examples where we could make savings using agents but this is a really bad example.

I disagree - why is it a bad example?

The player still has a year left on his contract with no notice periods..... he is well entitled, as per his contract, to stay at the club.
This will say for arguments sake cost a grand a week making £52k - an agent comes along and says I can get him a contract to take the player off your wage bill but this will cost BFC £5k - what should BFC do?

Agent fees

Furthermore former Bees player Barry Silkman who is now an Agent told radio listeners on Talksport a while back that the clubs moaning about agents should remember when they use them to rid themselves of unwanted players.
I don't know him although I did once play cricket against him if that helps.

The player wanted to move. Look who we got as a replacement.

Why, Talbot could have stayed and been paid £100K an agent found a club for him and BFC may or may not have (as I am only writing from memory of a question raised a couple of years ago) paid an agent some money but saved a considerable sum on his wages. Albeit they passed it on to Skulasson.

I'm saying no such thing but I'll repeat for the thick ***** amongst you

I WOULDNT PAY ANY AGENTS FEES :)

The replacement is not part of this discussion.

The player was still in contract and could have stayed at the club.

Ok Skulasson hasn't worked out, however at the time most of us were convinced he was a good signing albeit quite expensive. However had he not been struck down with abd injury, we really do not what he would have been like in a more succesful team.

Agent fees

He did not ask for a transfer. :fishing:

Of course he didn't. It worked out in everyone's best interests. But he knew BFC would sort it for him because thats what clubs do. But what would happen if this wasn't the way things were done? He'd have to arrange a club for himself or stay and honour the contract he signed (and he'd have done a far better job than Newman who we replaced him with).
