Yeah I'm not really defending him (or trying to anyway). It's certainly not the smartest thing for anyone to do - especially if a public figure.

I think its the way in which he is saying it, i.e. mocking someone whose speech is impacted by a learning disability that is the problem not the phrase that he is repeating.

If it's mocking the disability then its more questionable.
Although I still get back to the same quandary, does the imitation constitute mocking the child or his disability, or is it mocking the fact that it's a child a naughty word unexpectedly on TV.
Using an analogy again....if it had been a French child and he said the c*nt phrase in a French accent, it wouldn't be mocking the child or the French really to do an impression in a French accent....rather it would still be mocking the fact it was a child saying it on TV.

I just find these things interesting and have a disdain for the media that leap to negative conclusions first and worry about the impact later as well as an increasing tendency amongst society to do the same and judge quickly with little thought or basis.

Ben Stokes

A defence of 'feeling fragile' will get him no sympathy. Whether provoked or not, the footage is damning. A high profile, professional sportsman cannot behave like that in public and not face severe consequences. 20 years ago, it might have been brushed under the carpet, but no chance in 21st century CCTV and mobile phone Britain.

Ben Stokes

I just hope that the ECB work with him and support him rather than cast him aside. Even if he ends up doing a bit of time that shouldn't be the end of his England career.

Ben Stokes

If he is found to be the aggressor in this instance then he will be prosecuted and face the necessary penalties. At this juncture all we are seeing is videos with no dialogue and no real clarity to how this incident occurred and how it was played out.

Many people are jumping on the band wagon of condemning the actions often in a holier than though manner. If he is at fault then prison probably beckons or if community service then no inclusion in the Ashes team.

Will condem when the facts are known and not as now when he is being tried by the media

Ben Stokes

I would be MOST surprised if prison is even an option!

:imwith: Unless he has a fair bit of previous it's highly unlikely, it happens every Friday and Saturday outside 100's of clubs nationwide and very few end up inside as a result of a drunken tear up.

Ben Stokes

I'll wait for the full story before condeming him or otherwise.........

Hang em high on here from a kangaroo court who've seen a grainy video with no sound or knowledge of how it came about, like middle aged magistrates they've made up their mind because the poor blokes got ginger hair!

I thought I read that he had previous...

Arrest and caution in 2011 for obstruction of police whilst drunk. No prior incidents related to violence against another person.

So one caution when 20 for being gobby when drunk, all part of growing up and probably applies to 1000's of young lads every year.

Ben Stokes

I want to see the full story here. He was clearly excessive in his reaction but I'd bet good money that there's some provocation here. I'm off the opinion that he has not simply attacked someone without reason.

I am pretty certain that he is either stepping in to defend mates or the couple of blokes that were being or about to be attacked. From the clip that is available that doesn't look anything like someone starting an incident, the fact that one of the guys is going at them with a bottle has to be a factor and I know I would be pretty incensed if put in the same situation.

Ben Stokes

It's hard to do but when you're well on top and the "provokers" are beaten, you really need to down tools, I like the guy and get it's part of his make up but he will look at that and see what he did wrong, that said I want him back in the Ashes squad as soon as poss.

Ben Stokes

Leaving aside the incident some in the media (Vaughan for example) are getting pretty hysterical about it being the end of our Ashes chances, I know he is a very good all rounder but we have some other top players...

Think what Vaughan meant to say was that it was the end of the possibility of us putting up a heroic rearguard action and finally succumbing to a 5-0 series defeat. Now we will just cave in at every possible opportunity and get comprehensively beaten 5-0

Ben Stokes

If he did this at a football match he would be given a custodial sentence.

Ben Stokes

it's ridiculous, he went out, he had a row, that's it.

no one died. no one was harmed. hysteria reaches new levels.

everyone i've spoken to about it says this, basically. storm in a teacup. no big deal.

Ben Stokes

Yes - the self defence argument doesn't stand up once the other side gives up.

Yep but someone waves a bottle and in drink you don't always take the sensible option, sometimes a combo of anger and adrenaline takes over.

Then one is out of control. You're not going to get any sympathy from a Magistrate or Circuit Judge. :thethruh:

I bet you're a magistrate one day if not already? On this occasion I'm not arguing just pointing out why maybe he didn't cease when he could and should have.

lol not me. I couldn't think of a worse way of wasting valuable time on this planet

Imagine an England footballer had done this lol

I have to say, in the modern day where everyone has camera phones and a direct link to social media, representing your country as a sportsperson extends to down time as well now. Sad but true - you’re always being watched. Unfortunately he’s been caught out in a bad way.

I wonder what sort of things would have come out about some of the old England teams/players everyone had smartphones and twitter back then.

A good point, if you are an sports person representing England you need to live your social life like a hermit it seems, the price you pay. Stokes will be regretting things I am sure but I hope he gets back into the national team soon.

Not even a hermit, if we went to a few bars and went home at say 11/12 like a sensible adult then it wouldnt of happened. He had a game in 36 hours time and was out at near 3am during the middle of a series.

Hes been a right plonker. lol

got sent home from a tour of Australia 4 years ago for the same sort of thing.

Yep, out there him at Mat Coles were warned after late night drinking and then did it again (at least once more, but maybe more) and got sent home. Not very clever on a Lions tour when potentially you are trying to impress the powers that be.

Ben Stokes

No one was harmed? Really? Watch the video of it.

to be fair he looked like he wanted trouble and found it with stokes,,,,,oh well nothing to see here, move on ;)

anybody getting excited about this needs to get out more lol anyone who went out to pubs and clubs in the 80s would have seen a lot lot worse than that EVERYTIME they went out....just shows how peaceful everything is thesedays if that makes the front pages !

All started because the blokes were filming Hales get a blow job and refused to delete it.

Not much of a story unless Stokes was the one giving the blow job .......

It happens every Friday and Saturday in hundreds of town centres, big deal

Don't think Hales wanted his missus to find out, but given a snap chat of him getting a blow job (a different occasion and one he took) is now doing the rounds, don't think that matters now.

To be fair though, depending on the circumstances, people also lose their jobs as a result.

We're going around in circles, I think he needs to sort himself out and as a high profile, sporting role model he has to cut out the laddish behaviour.
However what he was involved in is a common occurrence that young lads in their 20's get mixed up in every weekend and I'm pretty sure 95% don't end up in the press or lose their jobs as a result?

Depends what your job is. I would have lost my job in my 20s if charged with ABH.
