It is a squad and not a "team". The players change from match to match to take into accouunt trialists, first teamers needing match practice or coming back from injury etc.


They IMO are playing as individuals each with something to pprrove rather than trying to gel as a squad aiming to win a league.

I woulldnt want to lose 10-0 every gane as it would show that effort and skill levels were not high enough but I am pretty sanguine about the results.

There's a meeting today at Walsall FC followed by a vote. Mark Devlin and Mark Warburton are attending on behalf of BFC. The attraction of more immediate Solidarity monies will I suppose prove too seductive for a majority of the 72 clubs and I'd expect the PL proposals to be accepted. I was surprised that the subject wasn't raised at last weeks Fans Forum and the question raised from the floor or through prior email on how in the opinion of the BFC board the new proposals would affect our academy plans if at all but it wasn't and as I have said we spent the evening zeroing in on the mostly irrelevant.

Winning is always nice Geoff, but in this arena of organised friendlies the performance and development is key, not the scoreline and that's why I don't pay any attention to them.

Foolish not to want our players to win games and earn decent scorelines?
I grant you that performance and development is important, and I also appreciate that our Development Squad often has a sprinkling of senior players who are trialists or need to get match fit, or work their way back from injury etc. But, surely, the 'edge' of competing to win the game has to be there? Otherwise these players will not get sharp enough for the cut and thrust of league football .And it will be difficult to judge if the youngsters have what it takes to succeed in mens football...
Is it really club policy that the results of this squad are 'irrelevant' and is Uwe comfortable with that?

Its obvious to me this is a great initiative that MB is funding and can only help in getting quality players in as well as getting games for players coming back from injuries.

You are talking here to someone who still has not got over Fred Rycraft conceding a late winner, through his legs, in a Football Combination Div 2 match versus Gillingham at Griffin Park in November 1959.....
Serously, though, Mark, my issue really was with the use of the word 'irrelevant' as my firm view is that , whilst 'player development 'is important, it is also vital that our players use these matches to develop the habit of aiming for decent results and being sharp and competitive enough to be an asset to the first-team, when needed...

he might not want his boss to know what he didn't actually have a cold yesterday, but instead threw a sickie so he could "interview" for another job

he might be a "celebrity" who doesn't want his dream of becoming a professional footballer to be reduced to rubble and mockery

That isn't what the development squad is for. If the focus was on the habit of getting results then we would still be in the Combination and playing in a League structure. It's completely the reverse of where under-21 football is headed.

The chance for our young lads and anyone who else is playing, to learn and improve by play against players like Bostock and Gallas. Which is thousand times better than who we were playing.

I am very encouraged that Jon does not seem to share your view that the scorelines and results of these games are 'irrelevant' and 'meaningless', otherwise the end product could prove less competitive and inferior than in the fifties...

Not all, no, only the games where the visiting side, or Brentford themselves, request the game is played behind closed doors. Mainly to stop scouts I suppose checking out their players or if they have players on trial. I believe some on here have been to Development Squad games.
