Remember the good old days? Quick swinging ball, near post flick on, and Terry Evans steaming in to bonce it to the back of the onion bag. Unstoppable.

Don't know why the flick on corner seems to have fallen out of fashion. Get it right and its very hard to defend.

Probably a false memory but I can remember Blissett scoring at the back post from a flick on. Think this may have happened a few times. And didn't Pead score with a volley from outside of the box direct from a corner.

Against Wycombe - we won 3-2 I believe.

True that we are woeful at corners.

.............he tried it against the Gpg Vets at Griffin Park but we have better defenders...............

Corners

Seems we do short corners under Warburton.... I hate them but when we do get crosses away from short corners they do get into better areas. Still not scoring front them though...

Thought people may be interested in this. It is how to take corners.

Key features of a good corner,

Getting the ball past the “first defender” is of crucial importance

Keeping the ball away from the area the goalkeeper inhabits is generally a good idea.

A corner kick that lands past the back post is occasionally successful but difficult to execute.

Receiving the ball just slightly before the midway point (towards the kicker) on the field is better than precisely in the middle of the field.

The really interesting conclusion to draw from this is that corner kicks can be made much more effective by highly skilled corner kick takers. A very skilled kicker should be able to consistently play the ball into the magenta area above resulting in corner kicks that score 40% more often than average. Using an average team in the English Premier League with about 5 corner kicks per game this works out to 2 additional goals per season.

Are these points not a bit obvious ade? Like I could of told you that without spending hours drawing a heat map :D

Well to me not obvious that even with a good corner taker putting the ball in the right place doesn't make that much difference.corners are over rated in terms of scoring from them. Anyway with a bit of luck we will score from one at Orient.

I think that at least two of our four goals at Orient will come from corners.

Is sucking eggs one of the requirements as well?

Corners

Our stats for converting corners into goalscoring opportunities, let alone goals, must be dreadful.

Corners

.............nowhere near good enough.............

Corners

We are useless from corners. Almost worth playing the ball back 35 yards and starting an attack from there.

Corners

Bees World said even our crossing was poor today...

Corners

Our delivery in the box whether from a static kick or on the run is generally poor. Don't know whether its poor movement or poor delivery or combination of both but either way its something we need to improve on!

Corners

12 corners plus another 25/30 crosses from open play.

Not once did we look like scoring.

I like Judge, but his crossing was terrible!

Corners

I believe the lack of an attacking coach is costing us. We have a great defence, which is well organised and contains more than one "captain" but we have no attacking captain in midfield or attack, there's no co-ordination. We need to bring in, next season, an experienced forward who can also read the game and make thing happen around him.

We now have a player in Tarkowski who looks like he can win headers at corners and set-pieces and we don't seem to get the ball near him. The short corner routine, which I guess has been introduced as a reaction to lack of aerial ability, just does not work at all. Yesterday, when Clayton took long throws, there was no-one at the front post; were to players expecting him to reach further? McCormack regularly sails a cross way too high to the far post... someone needs to have a word. First signing in the close season must be to the coaching staff.

Corners

Hopefully :warbs: is watching Liverpool v. Man City and seeing how dangerous 'old-fashioned' corner kicks can be. If they're good enough for his old pal Brendan Rodgers, why not us? My only criticism of Warbs is the fixation with short corners. If Škrtel can stick his head on one, I'm sure Tchaikovsky can too...

We are poo at set pieces_fact
Never look like scoring
Needs sorting for next season.

Corners

Have many have we scored from and conceded from corners this year. I reckon we have had 275 and conceded 211. Estimates of the chance of scoring from a corner are, as far as I know, not available publicly for division one. For the premiership it is one corner give 0.022 goals. This is an average number that masks quite a lot of variance. Applying it to us we should have scored about six goals and conceded between four and five goals.

Scored 3 - Bristol City, Gillingham (from a pen conceded after the corner) and MK Dons

Conceded - Sheff Utd, Bradford City, Colchester

So we have more or less conceded the expected number but we are about three goals down on scoring. Another three goals say would have resulted in a maximum of six extra points by turning draws into wins.

Corners

I said way back on this thread that the first person on the recruitment list should be an attacking coach; we don't ever seem to have a clue what to do.

Corners

It doesn't help that our players aren't particularly tall…we don't have loads of attacking threat from balls into the box when there are about 8 defenders there as well.

Tarkowski does help this though (as does flapping goalkeepers). But we aren't well suited to attacking balls from corners. Maybe we'd find more success just passing out towards the centre circle and passing around their defence hoping something would happen. Would make corners anticlimactic but we may be able to work a goal or two more.

We haven't scored a straight up 'header from a corner' since Wembley. Which is the most immediate attacking threat, the others have been volleys from an un-dealt with ball.

Corners

Hence my point re an attacking coach. We have Tarkowski who seems to be able to win headers but he's been hanging around the far post (where he got his goal) but perhaps he should running to the near post and flicking it on; that creates more opportunity and ought to reduce the number of balls that go straight to the 'keeper... for example.

Corners

I have looked through the past threads on corners. I found that complaints about our inability to score from corners has a long history. I have found a thread from 2001 and another 2003. All very similar to what we write now. Short corners waste of time, why can't players head the ball at corners, why aren't the players being coached on corners, quality of delivery. It goes on. My take is dead simple, it is very hard to score from corners. We have been led down the wrong path by highlight shows as goals from corners are shown each week. The reality is a goal from a corner is a rare event. This season we have scored, I think, from three. Given the number of corners we have had we should have scored from about six. This difference could just be noise, that is, random variation. So when we get a corner we need to realise that the chances of us scoring is pretty remote. In fact as I have posted before we may stand more chance scoring when the opposition has a corner than when we have one. So perhaps when the opposition get a corner we should cheer as we might score from a quick counter attack!

Corners

It's not just the fact that we have scored so few it's more that we have so rarely even looked like scoring from them due to poor delivery and lack of movement.

Of course the 2 factors are linked but surely we would increase our chances if we delivered better

Yes. The stats show that aiming for the penalty spot with an in swinger gives the best possible chance of scoring. Don't bother with out swingers or to the near post or far post as teams defend so well against these. Also must make sure that the goal keeper can't get to the ball. When heading don't try for corners as too many miss the target. Just get them on target so aim towards the middle of the goal. The ball's our energy will put it towards a corner. Aiming for a corner is hard as trajectory and energy of the ball will take it past the post. Also the person heading the ball will be buffered by other players again leading to the ball going wide or high. So dead simple really aim at the centre, deliver to the penalty spot and goals will follow.

BTW I'm reading the newly updated Soccernomics book. Totally fascinating.

Although our ball retention is something to be proud of our corners have been poor. I agree the lack of movement and variety is a major factor and a suprising one.

It is very good read. Made me have a re-think on many of the views I used to hold on football. Guess with Benham owning the club we have excellent information available that helps us a lot.

Corners

Crap without Sammy pretty much!

Despite his qualities, I could probably take corners better than Sammy. Often he struggles to deliver it past the first man.

Corners

Donaldson should sit on the near post to flick it on [ or in]. He's big and can do that especially as we aren't that good at clearing the first defender.

Corners

I still think we should not bother with corners. Take quick short ones to retain possession. So the player nearest the ball should take it without delay and then build from there. Don't bother sending a big defender forward, they should maintain their defensive position. Speed is important. Re-cycle the ball before defence has time to re-organise itself. I have posted on the stats thread that crosses are not very good at scoring from. In the premiership it takes about 90 to score one goal! So don't cross in the air but try to get the ball to feet as near and central to the goal as you can. The nearer and central a shot is taken to goal the higher chance of scoring is. So don't take long, hopeful shots but try to play the ball to feet near and central to the goal. For this to work speed is important. To be controversial don't send someone to take the corner who is needs to jog a way across the pitch. Nearest to the ball get it to the corner, and the player nearest the corner take it quickly.

Corners

We've been crap at short corners too.

Just get the ball swung out from the keeper, over the first defender and attack the ball, not a bloody standing jump either. What's happened to footballers nowadays? Can't they run 4 yards, leap - in time with the ball - and head the bloody thing in the back of the net? It's not rocket science and nothing to do with stats.
