CRUNCH TIME

OK......so after the most amazing summer we are fast approaching the new season with a sharp new management team, a new sense of purpose and belief, some exciting new signings and even some further funding for new acquisitions.

Is this the big Brentford breakthrough that we have waited for nearly 50 years?

Where will we finish this season?

My prediction is: 5th

We will win promotion at a play-off final (making amends for Wembley)

Learnt to loath playoffs but they seem the most realistic goal. Anywhere in play off places then please (higher the better for the advantage that gains and also be the in form side going into them) - quite a wish list.

2nd................or even 1st...........got a good feeling about this season...........just for once ;) looking around at the opposition, id say we havnt got that much to fear......for once they may fear us :)

anything less than 6th would be major dissapointment :(

I think what we've assembled now is a strong squad. If we get say another two or three quality players [ midfield and strikers] then I'll be more optimistic than I have been for the last 50+ years. I'll say no more than that.:)

The squad looks strong, as long as we make and take chances i think we will do well.Hopefully the players wont underachieve again.I think top 6

I am optimistic for the season but realistic. This time last year the sentiment was similar in that a play off push was hoped for and look what happened.

That said the squad, on paper, looks stronger. I still think we need to strengthen in at least two positions but from what I have seen so far it looks like this is going to happen.

I feel like I have the Brentford bug back and I can't wait until 6th August. I can honestly say I have not felt like this before the pre-season friendlies have started for a long long time:

Robbee74 prediction = 4th (right up with the top 2 until Easter)

What would have had to have happened this summer for you to believe we could get promoted this year?

A part of me agrees with you but i still can't help thinking this year could be the year.....as i did last year.

My heart says top 4, my head says 7th......Uwe has what on paper seems to have made 4 very good signings and we have another 7 players who have plenty of ability, after that we have IMO a very ordinary league one squad. If we can make a good start and avoid too many injuries anything is possible. I just hope there are at least another 4 new players coming in before Aug 5th.

Trying not to be negative, but just don't have faith in the new manager. Not worth talking about who I would have preferred as those arguments have already been made. Hopefully he'll turn out to be a good choice and prove me wrong.

We should definately make the top 6 with what we have already got, I suspect that there is more ambition than that inside the club and the money if necessary. I have a feeling that we have cleverly completed 4 quality free signings and have the money left to sign another 3 or 4 quality players before the start of the season. If that turns out to be true I think we have a very strong chance of making the top 2. Either way I am looking forward to this season very much.

Who knows? It's Brentford innit. 1st or 24th or anywhere in between. I was very optimistic before the start of last season. This season I'm being cautious.

Fairly optimistic about the forth coming season and a play off place at least should be able to be gained, with a couple more decent signings maybe something better than that, but remember UR is an untrtied manager at this level.

No idea yet until I see if the squad gels and takes to the new regime and possibly style of play.

Apart from Charlton no other club seems to have invested much yet but I think this is the lull before the storm.

I think I will hold fire to any predictions until the week before the season by which time the patterns should have emerged.

I don't understand this untried at this level stuff...

Chris hughton is untried but everyone wanted him... Andy Scott was untried in league 2 and won it in his first full season...

If we appointed Alex Ferguson he would be the same... untried at this level... doesn't make him crap...

Really can't wait for the season, i feel that the signings we've made are mostly better than anyone we've already got there. We played alot better towards the end of the season last year, if we could get ahead at more home games it would certainly help! - Sneak into the playoffs.

Really looking forward to it especially as job move means be closer to the hallowed turf for a lot of the time. Another couple of decent signings and we must be in with a shout. Could be 2nd (or 22nd if the last 40 years anything to go by!!!) I'll stick closer to the former. Play offs minimum. YOU BEEEES!

i would hardly say that july 7th is "crunch time" of the football season!!! i can think of much crunchier dates in my brentford diary; 6 May, 6 & 13 August, the Easter period, but today?! ridiculous. for that reason i am out.

I think a lot of posters on here need to take a step back a bit and think about what they are going on about.....
What we all have to remember is that ALL of this is new...new manager , new management team AND new team mates......................................these things all take time to bed in.

Believe me, no one wants to win promotion more than me, we just dont need to jump off the deep end and then go mental if it doesn't happen this season.

To be honest I'll just happy if we play a nicer brand of football that's easier on the eye and don't roll over against average teams like we did too often last season.

Totally agree, you think of how many times we did roll over and look at how far we were away from doing something, top 6 is achievable, hopefully we won't take 6 games to get a win and won't have those barren spells.

what we need is a good start i know this is obvious but most teams who start well finish near the top six i live in hope

encouraged i would say .. could be a 71-72 or 91-92 season if things go our way (though hopefully not 61-62!). Going forward was where we were lacking last year. Many managers commented that we were a strong side defensively and I think it was andy's man-management style that made the players we had under-perform when they did. The only game I saw us out-classed when Andy wasn't a factor was the Southampton game at the end of the season

Consistency and lots of goals scored by us (at home at least) is all I ask.

The key is that we kick the habit of playing to the level of the opponent on the day. That has brought us some performances against 'big' club teams that have been memorable for the right reasons but all too often it's brought shockers against really poor teams. We have to continue to rise to the level of 'better' teams without sinking to the level of the dross. If Uwe can introduce a bit of stereotypical German ruthless efficiency, we'll do well. But the rule has to be don't relax until you are five goals up and into injury time!

A nippy striker to challenge CMac alongside Donaldson and another midfielder and we will be close to automatic promotion. Otherwise, we are challengers for the play-offs.
Don't buy the 'bedding in' argument by the way!
Having said all that, as long at we score about 20 more goals than the last couple of seasons, I wil be reasonably happy

Agree with you, could be a very competitive league this season. Not sure where Charlton are getting all their money from, I thought they were skint.

I could not agree more. Last season is gone . It will be very interesting to see who the other two or three signings are should they materialise and as ever i am cautiously optimistic about the coming campaign. It always bugs me when you look back over the season and realise that if we had collected even half of the points we threw away in poor performances against sides that we really should be beating, our finishing position would be so much healthier. Lets get off to a flyer and take it from there.

I think we will be in the top 5 (somewhere), although we do need another decent striker and midfield player to really push for automatic promotion. I'm also interested to see if any of the development squad players can break into the first team squad and hopefully keep hold of any rising stars!

Once again, expectations are being racked up to impossible levels. The higher they rise, the harder will be the fall if the results don't justify the initial optimism. It's true that this year there's the combination of a new manager and some promising-looking newcomers. I must admit that I like the cut of Uwe Rösler's jib and am tempted to tell myself that yes, he's really bringing it together and all we need now is a Schlupp or another similarly gifted striker to make promotion a realistic prospect. But beauty is so often in the eye of the beholder (that was the case with many of last season's intake) and it might be wiser simply to refrain from making predictions while hoping for the best.

To some extent I think I understand where you are coming from, Uwe may need more than one season to get his players and squad together. Although, this is our third season back at this level and I do not think we have unrealistic expectations given the quality of our signings and (despite some of the loan players going back to their parent clubs). We have not lost any of our (better) players over the summer. I believe Mr Uwe has said himself he is aiming for a playoff place?.
