Let’s be honest Raya is prone to the occasional howler - I remember one against us when he played at Blackburn - but we accept it due to the all round game he brings most weeks. But this one is on the defender - clear the ball away from goal as everyone expects a defender to do and nobody is even talking about this.

If he did this playing for us against Burnley you’d agree with me.

I love Raya and think he’s an international because he’s a brilliant keeper. I want him to be Spains goalkeeper for the next decade. I’m also honest about this inept event.

Raya has to take a share of the blame for the goal but the defender has to do better.

My question would be...

Would Raya have been in the position he was in had he expected the defender to mess up the clearance/pass back or whatever it was supposed to have been? He was expecting a headed back pass to him, he wasn't expecting the defender to nod it on to the attacker, who knew nothing about it.

So how can this be down to Raya, when it was a mistake by the defender?

Pretty harsh on Raya, makes his debut for Spain, has sod all to do, then in the last few minutes his defender makes him look like a prat!

Assuming Raya gave a shout, that was 100% the defender's fault!

Communication issue? Maybe saying "eee lad, all reet for thee to clear ball" in a Lancastrian accent didn't help.

No surprise, wouldn't even be a surprise to see De Gea back in the club over him. Good chance it is just getting him out there with the National Team to build some relationships with the players and get some experience. Would love to see him take the starting role over though.

As long as he is on top form at Stamford bridge, none of the Spain stuff matters.
I think he will be very important for us over the next few matches, with a few good points being won by the Bees!!?

Funny old one for the Chelsea goal? I thought he went full stretch then kind of pulled back as if it was going wide?

I keep watching it again and can't make my mind up. Either way, a fantastic strike from AR.

It looked like that to me too, withdrew as if he expected it to go wide

I hope he is open to a new contract. That save and tip over the bar yesterday was out of the very top drawer.

Hopefully he and JDS (also out of contract in 2024, I think) are next on the recent conveyor belt of new contract extensions ??

I thought that at first, but now I think he started by going with two hands but realised it was swinging away from him. At which point he switched to reach for it with one hand and almost tried to swinghis arm at it to try and get enough on it to tip it wide.

if we can get him signed up on a longer contract then we're looking v good, he's shown how important to us he is both defensively and progressing the ball forward. Will be very difficult to find someone comparable (although Cox certainly looks the part).

He did exactly that for a shot earlier in the game which went just outside the post. It is hard to tell what happened for the goal but I think he’d save that more often than not.

He only signed a four year contract in October 2020 Doubt we are already looking at extending it again so soon.

That said, his injury earlier in the season showed he would be one of the hardest players to replace, so I agree with your sentiment. The two replacements brought in were not a patch on him (particularly coming for crosses and the sweeper role), or his commanding of the defence.

I have no idea what is in MB's and PG's minds with regard to future transfer policy. I imagine there will always have to be a player or two we must still sell on for a massive profit, not to balance the books, as it was before the PL money, but to generate the money to buy future multi million pound players to make us a better team and compete a bit better for wages.

Raya is one of those players that I can see genuinely improving and holding down a place at a top 6 club, maybe even top 4. I really hope we can hang on to him, but fear he is one that could go for massive ££££s. If he does, I'm sure we'll replace with better than what is currently his back ups.

Given that keepers can carry on playing at their level well into their 30s and Raya is still likely at 26 to be well before hitting his plateau he’s one who could with little risk be kept for a long time and still in 5 years attract a major fee.

I agree we will, like everyone outside the regular top 3-6 be a selling club but as the model relies on having better coming through and Raya is so clearly excellent and key to our style it’ll be a while before we’d be comfortable selling him. I think he and Norgaard (and obviously CE!) are our only currently genuinely irreplaceable players. Others are superb too but we could buy very good replacements and/or rejig our set up to play to their strengths (eg if Arsenal want to give us £50m for Toney we could get in Johnson, Lewis-Potter and Benrahma, maybe convert Bryan to central attacker in a three and still score well).

It’ll be interesting to see whether we exercise the option on Alvaro and think he can work on developing further- remember he’s 3 years younger than David so maybe to be compared to Raya when he was in his last season at Blackburn rather than where he’s at now.

Of course the club are looking at extending his contract at this time! You’ve got to keep your best players and he is the best.

Offers will come in for him this summer……

What a player DR has become. Unfortunately, I would be absolutely stunned if there were no large offers for him in the summer.

He has not just taken to the PL but he has grown so much and easily one of the best keepers around

Raya would be the most difficult player to replace in our squad if he left. Did not realise how important to the team he is, until he was injured earlier in the season. I hope the Dofs bring in some one who we can develop along similar lines because there is no one currently at the club who comes close to Raya imo.

Possibly- if we exercise the option it means the club believes it can. Has he looked as good in the key areas we need of a keeper as Raya did in 18-19 when we stuck five past him? What development is he showing in training? He’s not ready to be an equivalent to Raya now as we’ve seen but maybe in a season or two.

Thing is with Raya where would he go?
A top six club in the Premier League - but they all have settled keepers and he's not going to go anywhere & play second fiddle especially since he's just broken into the International squad. Ok you then look at the top four Spanish teams and it's the same story, all have established keepers as well & outside of Barcelona or RM who could afford him?
He's now getting the recognition he deserves he's playing in the Premier League, he's in the Spanish squad it seems to me it would take an exceptional offer to prise him away from us (I hope).....

From what I have seen of Cox, in 2 or 3 years time he could be a replacement for David. He has very good distribution and looks a good (but not exceptional keeper). The keeping will, I think, improve over time.

After seeing the love between David and Sergi on Sky Sports this morning, I think it’s unlikely they’ll ever be separated again.

I genuinely believe he’s better than every goalie in the league barring ederson and Alison he could go anywhere obvs hope he doesnt
