Great news. Best keeper we've had IMO in my memory (except maybe that Paul Smith season).

Deserved and onwards and upwards

(now do the same for Said! :D )

Smith was at his best when in goal for Southend against us a truly amazing performance

David Raya

His agent has earnt his corn over the past month or so then...........

David Raya

4 more years could still mean gone in January if the price is right. I hope not but that’s football contracts these days.

David Raya

His much vaunted distribution superiority to Daniels's style, wasn't there, tonight; a weird escapade to the corner when dealing with an attacker, that almost went wrong and a clearance straight to the opposition, amongst other foibles, but one great save.
I think his poor clearance that went straight to the opposition, is a new type of kick. Keeping it low. It worked shortly after with a kick straight onto Ghoddos’s chest which worked well

David Raya

Not his best performance. Distribution wasn't up to his usual high standards and there were a few errors which thankfully went unpunished (although he made one world-class save and kept a clean sheet which you can't knock).

I think Frank probably keeps safe-hands Luke as no.1 for Sunday at least.

But fantastic news on the new contract... obviously the Arsenal interest has had some impact. The way we manage transfer interest and keep players happy these days really is impressive.

David Raya

Well done everyone at the club who held their nerve when Arsenal came a knocking

I love my club, when it comes to selling players

No means no
Yes means yes IF the price required is matched

Our no dickheads policy rarely causes either other those two truths to be broken

We must be one of the easiest clubs to buy from in the country as everyone knows where they stand from word go.

David Raya

what great Friday news .

David Raya

I would definitely start him Sunday
I'd be amazed if he doesn't start. Luke has done really well however, there is no question about the pecking order and no question LD knows and accepts that. I suspect there was an open question about how unsettled he might be over the last 2-3 weeks which has now been put to bed.

David Raya

Fantastic news and another "he doesn't want to be here...He's not really injured" transfer thread put to bed.
Rather than locking these players linked with moves away in the garden shed,we should lock the people that post this rubbish in there instead.

David Raya

Well I did not see that happening. Great news! Very excited to see many more seasons with him in goal. Out of him, Watkins and Benrahma, I was most worried about him leaving.

He was the hardest to replace without a major change to our play.

David Raya

Apologies if this has been flagged elsewhere but the Daily Cannon site is reporting the inclusion of an end of season release clause in Raya's contract but doesn't quote a figure.

Daily Cannon on Raya

David Raya

Did anyone notice that free kick Coventry had in the first half. Seemed VERY similar to the play off final one in terms of the position, and It looked for all the world if he had tried the same thing Raya would have left too much space again?

David Raya

Some decent enough saves, and distribution was improved on Daniels... but later in the game he made a poor decision to claim a corner that led to Coventry hitting the crossbar.

Glad to see him back in the team, but he's still a bit rusty.

David Raya

I think he makes a huge difference to the way we play. He’s obviously a little rusty but the way he sweeps up behind the defence enables us to push further up the pitch. Also he seems to be more vocal than Daniels and we look less terrified about crosses coming in with him in.. distribution is so much better too, almost out Mbuemo away with one kick..

Let’s face it, at the moment a keeper decides to commit to coming for a corner he doesn’t know for sure if he will get it. There are too many variables in there: the flight of the ball the movement of other players, whether he gets impeded et cetera et cetera. It’s a judgement call and on this occasion he was marginally wrong but you know what I’ll take that every day as he claims so many more balls than any other keeper I can remember playing for us

Who's talking about corners? I'm talking about starting position for a reasonably wide free kick far out.

Come on Wibs...we’ve been tthrough this. lol

As a keeper you play percentages of what is most likely to happen.
From that distance and position a cross is the most likely outcome, however even if the player goes for goal he’ll have to get a level of accuracy and power that 9 times out of 10 will not come off.
How many other teams attempted that last season?
I don’t believe for 1 second that was worked on in training with Fulham either. It was opportunistic, I would bet good money on had that been a full Wembley with fans Bryan wouldn’t have attempted that in a million years.

I’d be more pissed if he positioned himself like Button used to and/or Bentley towards the end of his stint with us, where you either have a deep defensive line, which means you cannot come and claim the ball as there is a sea of players in front of you, or you play a high line then position yourself on the goal line giving the opposition a nice big space to cross the ball into for the attackers.

The questions you need to ask yourself are...

1. if teams are so clued up on how Raya is positioned at free kicks like that why is Bryan the only person to attempt a shot from there? Surely everyone would if it was genuinely worth it.

2. how many goals did we let in last season from free kick from similar positions out wide that were crossed in?

My guess would be very very few. Which says to me the tactic works for Raya and our defence.

Don’t panic lol

David Raya

We are a better team with Raya in it. Simple as - all keepers are prone to mistakes.
Raya at Hull Away and Wembley - Confirmed that with two corkers.
But - he’s young, highly rated and our training has made him leap forward so much in one season that Tony Mowbray the Blackburn boss couldn’t believe the improvement in him.
Brentford play better at speed on the counter, Raya the minute he has the ball sets that tone.
Daniels is a steady good competent keeper, Raya is an excellent one and Arsenal knew it.

As you say Mick, with Raya in the side we are a completely different proposition. He gives us an attacking dimension far beyond any other keeper we’ve ever had. If the price is a couple of cock-ups a season, I’ll take that all season long. If we’re to get to the P(romised) L(and), Raya will be as important as anyone.

David Raya

100% think Raya is our best keeper. Was just slightly surprised he didn't seem to have subtely adjusted his position, and even shifted just a little bit to his left as the player took his run up.

Like BHS says though maybe they acknowledge the percentages of it happening again are so small they are happy to carry on. Was just an observation.

Don’t make that observation again !!!!
You’ll upset me mate ?

David Raya

Not at his best today at all. Will be disappointed to be beaten at his near post by the 2nd Stoke goal - it did take a slight deflection. Was unsighted for the third but might have expected him to pull off a save if he was at his absolute best.

David Raya

Not at his best today at all.
Not many were, especially in the first half.

First goal was a free header.
Second he was unlucky with, as it took a deflection, otherwise I'm sure he would've saved it.
Third was a decent hit.

David Raya

I can't see how he can be faulted for any of the Stoke goals, he can't bring out miraculous saves all the time.

Not sure two of the goals needed miraculous saves. In the Daniels vs Raya debate l've always said safe hands first. I get the Raya argument but yesterday summed up what is the more important consideration for me. Would Daniels have saved one?I don't know but Raya could have done better IMO.

Raya's a far better keeper all round. Playing Daniels wouldn't have made any difference yesterday, if you don't win your tackles or get your blocks in and you leave players unmarked in the box you're going to concede regardless of who is in goal.

Not sure on what basis you see Raya as better all round. Yes, he brings a wider dimension to our play but also brown trouser moments. Daniels has been reliable when selected.Agree the performance was poor but if Raya had done better with two of their goals then we might have got away with it.

IMHO he's better with the ball, he's better with crosses, he's better communicating, he's better at sweeping and is an outstanding shot stopper. Second goal was unlucky as Dalsgaard's deflection took it past him, maybe he could have got a stronger hand on the third but it was an excellent strike. Not sure Daniels would have done any better?

The 2nd he should of saved, but he wasnt to blame for yesterday. Only one man to blame yesterday and his mistake was a hour before the kick off.

If Daniels had been in yesterday, he'd have had plenty on here raising question marks around the goals.

None of the goals were Raya's "fault" but for the 2nd the deflection had negligible effect and he was beaten at his near post, which is poor. If Raya is getting a hand to the third, he should be turning it around the post.

I think overall Raya is the better keeper. But both keepers need to be held to the same standards ?‍♂️ None of the goals vs Preston were Daniels' fault, but he certainly could have done better on at least one of them. No need for "blame" either.

David Raya

UE Cornellà, the club where David Raya started, have just knocked La Liga leaders, Athletico Madrid out of the Copa Del Rey.

They are the Brentford of the Spanish Leagues, rising up swiftly and close to the top tier.

Based near Barcelona in Catalonia.

David Raya

A lot of talk about Arsenal possibly coming in again for Raya. They're probably sending Runarsson out on loan. They do realise he signed a new deal don't they?
