Like every goal keeper he will make the odd mistake, but you have to appreciate how much he gives us. I never thought I would see this type of sweeper keeper at Brentford. I remember in one of our earlier Championship games we'd lost away to Sheff. Weds. On the tram coming back their fans saying our defence playing out from the back looked like rabbits caught in the headlights, Now we are just so comfortable with this aspect and Raya is the fulcrum. The saves he made today were superb. If he was at fault for Boro's goal he more than made up for it.

I think there is still a fair number on here and on social media who really dislike him and jump on his mistakes but keep quiet when he made the 2 incredible double saves today ..
Anyone that doesn’t like him doesn’t understand how much his outfield ability (coupled with top top keeping) improves the side. The ‘Boro commentators on iFollow were waxing lyrical about his footballing ability and how that gave us an extra dimension. If we go into the final game 4 points ahead of second I’d like to see him get a game outfield! I reckon he would do a job...

He was clearly fouled today for their goal and at Swansea too

David Raya

Tough for goalkeepers because if they make a mistake it can lead to a goal. That said the saves stop goals and Raya won at least 3-1 today on that count. We don't win today's game without him. He showed great character today. A big boost to his confidence which is only a good thing

David Raya

it's not just his saves that make the difference, his distribution is world class, even the boro commentators mentioned it..

Neil Maddison (though to his credit he went into full "well yeh have ta say, we've got ta hold wor hands oop" mode in the dying minutes) came out with some right pearlers, like "ye win games by sticking the ball in the back of the net and Brentford've did that today".

Or if we have a penalty he takes it

If Raya never made a mistake and was constantly making saves like he did today along with his distribution and sweeper keeper role, he would be playing for Real or Barca .. he plays for us for a reason ??

He might have said all this if he had been a geordie!! As a Yorkshireman, though, it wasn't quite this way, even if the sentiment was. ;) Very balanced commentary though.

I personally think that if Arsenal had nabbed him he would have displaced Leno. The reason he’s playing for us is that the DoF have consistently managed to find players that are too good for us where nobody else has (yet) realised the potential. That’s why we are getting better & better...

When each of those double saves happened, I genuinely could not believe how the ball had not gone in the net. I thought something odd had occurred. Like there was a forcefield protecting our goal. Just incredible.

An exceptional performance yesterday two aspects today.

Following Boro's first goal the psychological strength to not let it affect his performance and to continue to hold his high position and attack crosses and high balls into the box - upon several viewings I do think the referee missed an infringement from Saville. Secondly the two double recovery saves he made - one in each half....the technique and reflexes required for both were of the highest calibre.

Raya is an exceptional keeper in many aspects of his game. He plays a high risk game positionally but he has absolute belief in his technique and his recovery time, reflexes and distribution are as good as anything in the Championship and as good as many in the Premiership.

David Raya

I was surprised in the interview afterwards how good his English is - fluent and with a northern accent. He came to Blackburn when he was just 17 which helps explain it.

David Raya

Whatever happened to refs protecting keepers?
Used to be the case that they would blow up if anyone so much as touched them. Now it seems you can bundle into them and impede at will.

Perhaps it's just poor officiating, but some of these Bidwell-esque actions are like a throwback to the 50's when attackers would just shove the keeper plus ball into the net.

David Raya

Stood up really well to the aerial ball tonight ?
Well played David ?

David Raya

It might get forgotten but his save in the first half from that Laurent chance was a huge moment in hindsight.

David Raya

Really dominated the box well today. Was decisive and either claimed or punched well. Perfect..

David Raya

Excellent performance tonight.. will be annoyed by the penalty as he got there but couldn't keep it out

Distribution all over the shop today, Looks like his confidence has deffo taken a knock.

Could have done better with the first.

The first goal, where we presented the ball to the Barnsley player on the edge of the 6 yard box and allowed him an unhurried shot at goal ?

I think Charlie Chaplin could have knocked that in.

?‍♂️ Keeper anticipate the cross and clean up/get closer to the dropping ball.

David Raya

Did Pinnock not indicate he thought Raya was coming for the ball for the 1st goal v Barnsley ?
It doesn't matter what he thought, he should have prevented the attacker from getting the opportunity.

David Raya

Thought he was the least of our problems today tbh.. Not sure he could have done anything about either goal

Nope don't think he could do anything about either to be fair. I don't think he's at his absolute assured best at the moment and seems an element of hesitancy between him and the defence at the moment following the questionable goals against Swansea (definite foul) & Boro (arguable). Still he is remaining positive in his decision making and I have few concerns about him and sure the clean sheets will follow.

David Raya

Didn't look like much communication for the first goal between Ethan and David. Henrik a spectator as well. Very poor and oh so avoidable.

Watching his post match interview.

I just find it a bit odd he said in spells we were ok and we need to learn from it? Seems to lack a bit of desire - want to see a bit more of “we were rubbish and we need to put it right”

mind you I don’t know David personally and he may just be pragmatic.

A curates egg of a performance from our No.1 Spaniard today. Couple of good stops including one top drawer reflex save, very unlucky with the penalty but tried to be too clever threading the pass to Ghoddos through a non existent eye of the needle. Always trying to be positive but suffering as part of a porous defence at the moment.

If he didn't make those kind of mistakes he'd be playing for one of the best teams in the Europe, so sometimes it's good for us that he makes a clanger or two so we can keep hold of him ;)

In all seriousness, he's integral to the way we play and those kind of mistake we just have to swallow from time to time. I know there's a lot of more old school fans around (probably a load on here too) who would prefer Daniels, but I don't think they see the bigger picture.

The bigger picture of picking up more points by not giving ridiculous goals to the opposition?

David Raya

Part of the issue being teams pressuring him on the ball, one on Rays then two or three cutting off the usual side pass to either centre half or full back, leaving him with the choice of a hoof or trying to pick out a free midfielder, only for that pass to go astray or be telegraphed so that another opposing midfielder is straight onto that pass. To hit our midfielder they need to show greater awareness, movement and a will to pick up that pass and fight off the attention they will undoubtedly receive. Training sessions almost need to be 11 v 14 so the 11 get the feel for the pressure they will be put under in real games.
