Current Reported Interest

Arsenal and Manchester City: The Sun 25 Jul 2020
ARSENAL and Manchester City are plotting to poach £10m goalkeeper David Raya away from Brentford this summer, according to reports.

Note: The Sun attribute their story to the 90 min website who write:

Exclusive - Manchester City are considering making a move for Brentford goalkeeper David Raya as Pep Guardiola looks to bring in a replacement for the departing Claudio Bravo. However, they may face competition for his signature from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

24-year-old Raya only joined Brentford last summer for around £3m, but he has been crucial in the Bees' promotion push this season. The shot-stopper has played every minute of Championship football in 2019/20, keeping 16 clean sheets in this time - placing him at the top of the list in this department along with Millwall's Bartosz Bialkowski.

Worth noting a few factors at play here:

1) David Raya meets the criteria for home-grown status but is bilingual. Pretty unique in that sense. Big clubs tend to have a home-grown backup goalkeeper in order to help meet their squad quota.

2) Inaki Cana, our previous GK coach, is now at Arsenal.

3) We are due to hire a new GK coach for the new season. He will have his own personality and coaching style. Might even speak a different language. Perhaps now would be a good time to bring in a GK suited to working with this new coach?

4) We have Ellery Balcombe and Luke Daniels who probably both deserve a crack at more minutes next season. There will surely be some movement out between the three of them.

Rays has been a massive positive for us and was headhunted specifically for his ability to anticipate danger and pass the ball out quickly and accurately.

He has benefited us far more than he has caused us problems and yes I’m still smarting at Bryan’s first goal. It’s all about playing the percentages.

So if he does go we have to identify someone else with his attributes and there are not many around.

Absolutely spot on!

Don't know about Balcombe but Daniels isn't good enough IMHO. I thought we had other keepers in the B squad?

Not sure Balcombe will be given a chance, Daniels is purely back up. Gunnarsson looks the closest to Raya in that his distribution is better than the other two. Raya has been excellent in that respect. Would be v difficult to replace I think.

Arsenal have two good GKs already and spending £10m on another would be an odd use of their resources. Man City I could see I suppose. Hope we keep hold of him.

I’d pick him up and walk him to Arsenal for £10m.

The suggestion is one of Arsenals two keepers could move on for £20m + and they would need a very decent cup keeper. Probably just newspaper / clicbait stuff.

How about 'HOT STUFF'? It will give rival supporters an even bigger laugh at our expense. Unbelievable Jeff

Whilst not the originator of this term, I think it would be more constructive if you proposed an alternative term rather than just say "that's sh*t". :sorted:

Isn't Leno a long term injury and they want cover for Martinelli?

I am concerned that the team may have too many new players when we kick off. As proven again in 2019, it takes time for players to bed in. Especially those who come from other countries.

Raya bedded in quicker than most newbees.

He'd been at Blackburn four years

'Smart and with the heart' Raya stays at Brentford and helps us have another crack at automatic promotion. He then has the EPL at his feet (or in his hands).

'Influenced-by-agents' Raya takes the money and the chance for an EPL move, but then warms the bench for the next 2-3 seasons before loan spells/transfer back into the EFL.

I hope he's staying ... no game time in the Prem, and a he needs another good Championship season to continue to build his experience, and confidence in his abilities.

I don't think bedding in the players is what cost us - every team is adapting to new recruits pretty much. What is more corrosive is the presence in the squad of obvious starting players who are not starting (see Maupay) because a move is expected and being negotiated. That creates an air of uncertainty which is unhelpful. I would go so far as to speculate that had Neal got his move 2 weeks before the opener, that we would have started the season better and would now be gearing up for premier league football. Interesting to see what stance MB takes this time around. Selling OW & SB before the season starts would possibly cost us a few £m as we would not be holding out and playing (usually successful) brinksmanship. However, losing say £10m total in fees might be a good deal in the long run if (and only if) it enables us to go into the season with a settled squad! Nice choice to have to make and I am not sure what the best option would be. You would need somebody who understands game theory and calculation of likelihoods. Do we have anyone like that? Oh...

Think the disadvantage we have at the start of every season is that we always have sought after players.
A lot of clubs don't have that "problem".
I've never really understood the logic behind the transfer windows.
It hinders us every pre season (and in January).
We're victims of our own success, not sure how we best combat these recurring issues TBH

I don't buy that. Maupay was clearly not going to be part of the plans for the season. We had a huge amount of upheaval last summer. We had a new GK, new CBs, pretty much completely new midfield, new winger and a player learning the no.9 role. We also spent the entire pre-season focusing on the defensive side. There was an interview with one of the players after a late pre-season friendly and they said they'd hardly done any attacking work it had all been defence, defence, defence. Now that work has stood us in good stead all season but it meant we hadn't bedded in our attacking play and that showed in games v Birmingham, Charlton, Forest etc.

Arsenal and Man City, at least 20m. City are happy to spend 50m on Johnny nobody who never plays so they are not getting him for 10.

VILLARREAL SIGNINGS - CHOSEN GOALKEEPER OF THE YEAR IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP THIS SEASON WITH BRENTFORD
Goalkeeper David Raya, on Villarreal's agenda

08/24/2020 8:24 PM

Villarreal has moved quickly in the market to look for a substitute to replace the more than safe march of Andrés Fernández to Huesca. And in that sense, the Castellón team has the young Spanish goalkeeper, David Raya, at the top of their agenda, who this season has played for Brentford in the English Championship.

Raya, 24, came to British football very young after signing in 2012 for Blackburn under 18, from the UE Cornellà. Last season he went to Brentford, where he quickly took over the title and became a key part of the good season of a team that fought until the last minute for promotion to the Premier.

Precisely, and despite being elected best goalkeeper in the category, a mistake of his in the tie against Fulham, left his team without promotion. In recent weeks his name had even been linked to important Premier teams such as Arsenal.

Despite the fact that Villarreal has other options on the market, Raya's is seen with very good eyes given the tremendous progression that the player has shown in this last season and because it is to the taste of Unai Emery. Raya is a goalkeeper of remarkable power in the aerial game with his 186 centimeters that has already attracted the attention of important teams such as Villarreal now.

Bedding in is a significant issue for us, at least in the mind of TF. I asked him in his GPG Zoom interview whether the restart would be like a season beginning and how he’d manage to avoid the often quite slow starts to seasons we’ve had. He said that at the start of the season we have usually had a lot of new players who were getting used to the club and who the management were learning about in terms of what they could do and where they should play. The restart was different because he knew exactly who to play where and what could be asked of them (as 7 straight wins showed!). If we have a big turnover of players in the coming days, we’ll have that problem again and will need to see how well TF can get them going quickly.

Personally, given how key Raya is to starting us off playing out From the back and the likelihood that we will retain our midfield and defence (barring possibly Rico- though we seem more to start going out to Dalsgaard to let Rico creep further forward so he might be deputised for short term by Sergi) I think we would feel Raya going more in the short term than Said/Ollie where incoming forwards could slot into a system already set up to deliver a lot of chances for attackers.

Completely agree!

I think we need to hang on to Raya, he's been superb this season and is a major reason for our improved defensive performances. His confidence on crosses and his distribution have made a massive difference this season. Not sure he'd want to go somewhere to be second choice?

David Raya

two of our former coaches now at Arsenal and they are copying (to some extent) our B team model. If , as suggested, Martinez or Leno leave north London then they may hop on the bus to kidnap our keeper?

I think it would certainly take one or other to leave. My business partner holds a season tkt at N London's largest library and reckons Martinez is actually better than Leno. Big q for DR is whether he is content to spend a few of his best years training but not actually playing as my sense is that Villareal or Arsenal see him as a #2. I have a suspicion he gets off on the adrenaline of playing week in / week out in front of a baying crowd (viz his reactions when we score) and may prefer to stay as a #1. But who knows apart from the man...

They haven't really moved that quickly have they?

Really hope he stays but i guess he would double his salary?

There's loads of stuff on twitter suggesting they're looking to sell Martinez who wants first team football and Raya is their choice as replacement for backup... Probably some substance given the Inaki connection..

David Raya

I don't think we really want to have to try to find another suitable goalkeeper now. I doubt we can expect much of a fee from Arsenal so keep him and tell him he can go next summer if he wants the move.

This was my thought. Arsenal fans are discussing selling Martinez for around £15-20m which suggests they would want to pay less than that for Raya. But surely only £15m+ would make it worth our while considering how disruptive it would be to our back line (which was basically the best in the Champ last season).

I imagine anything north of 8m and he would be off, just my guestimation though
