The tactics, fielding, bowling and fielding positions from the West Indies is up there with the worst ive ever seen in the last 5 or 6 overs. Abysmal.

General Cricket Thread

Embarrsing. Why bowl short on a pitch where it sits up. This is pathetic. If you can't do basic cricket things. Dont bother to play.

Also Kieron Pollard should never be allowed to bowl this pathetic 2 step nonsense - that is short, has no pace etc. How has this guy made a living out of cricket? Hes always done nothing.

General Cricket Thread

This is even worse from the Windes. Shepherd should never play international cricket again!

General Cricket Thread

Amazing from Bangladesh today in an ODI against Afghanistan.
45-6 after 11 overs.
174 run partnership, ended on 219-6 with an over to spare successfully chasing 215.

Two quick points on the Pakistan v Australia test in Lahore. Fair play to the Aussies for dangling the carrot. (Cummins is no Root) & love or loathe the man Steve Smith is the quickest test batsman to 8,000 runs (average over 60').

Yep fair play to Cummins. All the pitches so far has been like batting on a road with no potholes.

On Smith. Sorry I can’t give any congrats to a cheat.

I was going to say it might have been a road, but not a Pakistani road, having had that pleasure of that experience.

Well done Australia. Don’t like the team much but they deserved to win and Cummins is an excellent young captain. As for Pakistan - deserved everything they got for producing dead pitches and never ever considered chasing the total.

Yeah second your thoughts Indian Bee. I watched most of that series and a huge contrast in skill level between sides. 1-0 series win does not do Australia justice. Starc and Cummings were superb bowling quick and reversed the ball consistently. And Lyon too was Mr consistent. Pakistan mind you are a pretty rubbish side at the moment a midget mentality with the way they play their cricket and too many old passengers in the side (Azhar Ali, Fawad Alam, Hassan Ali and the two spin options). Miles away from being competitive.

Aus vs SA and Aus vs India will be cracking contests though.

70 odd for no wicket at the start of play they were in the box seat, why wouldn't they go for it.

At the end of the day the bigger picture is seeing test match cricket back in Pakistan.

The first two tests from what I saw was painful (bordering on boring) to watch (as has been the first two tests between WI and England) so pleased that we had a result in the final test. However test match cricket to survive needs good test match cricket pitches that provides an even contest between bat and ball. I was also critical of the second test match pitch at Bangalore between India and Sri Lanka and I was pleased the match referee (Srinath) deemed and rated ‘below average’.

Anyway Australia are a better test side than Pakistan and this series showed Pakistan bowling attach is largely ineffective on flat tracks. Shaheen Afridi was poor and was showed up how to bowl in those conditions by Starc and Cummins. I think Pakistan just didn’t want to lose and well they have no Rishabh Pant in their ranks to take the game to Australia.

Agree with you that the main thing is seeing International Cricket being played again in Pakistan.

Watched the Women's World Cup this morning. Impressive performance by England to reach the final against Australia on Sunday (I think!). Aussies strong favourites obv.

Fantastic turnaround by England Women to reach 50 over WC Final!! ?
Lost first 3 group games, but have won every game since then, and now face Aussies in the Final on Sunday morning in an attempt to retain the trophy!! ?

Fantastic win for Pakistan to chase down 349 to beat Australia by six wickets with an over to spare.

General Cricket Thread

Australia currently 7/3 against Pakistan in the 3rd ODI

This Pakistan team looks very impressive.

General Cricket Thread

Recovered some what.

59-4.

General Cricket Thread

Decent series win for Pakistan although Aussies without Starc and Cummings. Finch looks shot to me. Could be the end of him.

Brilliant innings by Nat Sciver but the Aussies are just too good - won 37 of 38 ODIs before today which is outrageous. No disgrace to lose to the best women's side in history IMHO

General Cricket Thread

Sciver still giving it a go here. 101 to win off of 11 overs, only two wickets left though.

General Cricket Thread

Australia are just too good. An exceptional one day side. 38 victories from 39 played. Incredible. England did ok to keep with it after losing wickets early and cheaply. No shame in losing to this Aussie XI.

What a great finish in the IPL today. 12 needed off the last two balls and both hit for 6. Amazing from the Gujarat Titans.

General Cricket Thread

Ben Foakes scores 132 not out against Warwickshire in his first innings of the summer.

Les Beeavinu has been quoted saying 'Foakes is sh*t, Buttler would have scored double the amount of runs in half the amount of balls'.

Bracey scored a better ton for Gloucestershire in awful conditions. Hopefully another chance one day for him

Joe Root resigns as captain of the test team.
Who next?

If you go for someone like Stuart Broad, that is only a short term option, with him being at the back end of his career, plus we'd use all of our reviews up before lunch on the first day.
Stokes has also been mentioned, but do you want to put the burden on one of your best players.
The problems with English cricket are way beyond the captaincy.

General Cricket Thread

The right decision, I backed him after the Ashes because clearly Australia are a much better test side than us but our performance against the West Indies was incredibly poor and it was clear something had to change. A few cricket journalists have said that it was Root who wanted Broad and Anderson axed and Strauss agreed, so clearly he must take responsibility.

A great batsmen but an average Captain, his mindset was too defensive and last summer against New Zealand and India he clearly didn't have the confidence to go for a win on a couple of final day run chases. In five years we haven't really progressed and I don't think he ever trusted our spinners or knew how to captain them. Leach and Parkinson should have played more tests in the past couple of years.

Hopefully at 31 he can still give us another 5 years or so of his batting.

Given the over the top reaction generally to any England defeat, most captains are under more pressure not to lose than go for a win it seems.

Do you have Sky sports?

Their once awesome cricket commentary team has now lost Bumble Lloyd, Michael Holding and today, Rob Key.

They released David Gower and Ian Botham. And RIP Shane Warne and Bob Willis.

Might they splash their cash and persuade Joe Root to hang-up his boots ?

General Cricket Thread

It feels a watershed moment for English cricket at this time a bit like 1999 with Fletcher and Hussain.

Key is a sensible appointment - in tune with domestic and international cricket and a good reader of the game and immensely likeable within the game and has life perspective after suffering a stroke two years ago.

Whats interesting is he is a big supporter of Zak Crawley, (Kent connection) so long term you can see Crawley if he can get his technique tightened coming to the Captaincy position once Stokes has finished his caretaker role if he wants to take it.

Feel like county cricket will be watched a bit more keenly too with Parkinson at Lancs bowling leg spin well and Haines the Sussex opener scoring runs consistently over the last 14 months with another big 200 today.

General Cricket Thread

I like Rob Key but his intonation as a commentator annoyed me. Hopefully we now get more of the excellent Mark Butcher. Butcher, Hussain, Atherton, Ward - all very good imo.

General Cricket Thread

My initial reaction was an interesting and surprising choice. One from afar wouldn’t have expected Rob Key would have the credentials for the role but good luck to him. A big task ahead but as he pointed out England are very good at two formats of the game. Just needs to put in the changes in place to get the balance back right for test cricket.

I would highly recommend those that have not read his book - ‘Oi, Key Tales of a Journeyman cricket: My life in Cricketer’ to grab a copy and read it. I really enjoyed it and gives a good insight into the man. A few witty parts also in the book.

Finally, not sure it is my settings on the phone but seems he seems to have deleted lots of his Twitter posts.

General Cricket Thread

I do like Rob Key. Whilst he might not have the managerial experience he knows the game and has played at the highest level, I think he will do fine given time.

Not been following the IPL this year as well for me T20 is blah but noticed Jos Buttler got his 3rd century this year. That is some achievement in this format and on course to equal or potentially beat the record held by VK of centuries in a IPL season.
