Looks like Brendon McCullum will be the New England coach.

General Cricket Thread

An odd choice.
Really why?

Excellent test record as batsmen and captain for New Zealand and turned them from one of the poorest test sides to one of the best.

Knows English cricket well and is good mates with Eoin Morgan too. Think he's the type of character that will get on well with Stokes too.

No experience.

When a team is troubled as much as our test side, I would expect an experienced steady hand to be a better choice. He has very little experience as a coach and none at test level. Personally, if we wanted someone with no experience to take a punt on, I'd talk to Stuart Broad.

I don't expect wild agreement of course!

I agree with you on the relationship he has with Morgan, but it would make more sense if he was the white ball coach. Whilst McCullum's test record is great, quickest century, &c., his coaching experience has been limited to shorter formats, and it's that quick hitting that has seen him as being a bit of a revolutionary in white ball.

(I might be biased though as I live with a cricket analyst for a leading company in the field and basically have to listen to this debate at home, mind!)

I'd be willing to take a punt as well on Broad. At least with him not being given a captaincy, there's no risk of burning through all of England's reviews. ?

He's got some coaching experience in the IPL, not the same as tests I know but he's played at the top level, understands modern cricket and knows how to deal with top players. As I said he massively improved New Zealand as a test side.

The days of international coaches loading up the bowling machine in the nets and telling a batsmen where his elbow should be are long gone. It's about creating an environment and getting the best out of players and knowing what's required at the top level.

If we're going to have split coaches then that relationship between the captains and coaches of the two formats needs to be strong so as I said I think this makes a lot of sense.

Delighted with the appointment of Brendon McCullum. Has a really positive mindset, loads of experience as captain to help Stokes and plays the game in the right way.

You do wonder if he is a deep thinker in the same way as a Duncan Fletcher, but looking at where we are at, a good fit with Stokes and Key in terms of getting us back to playing positive cricket.

Wish him all the best.

Brendon McCullum confirmed. I personally believe both the appointments of Key and McCullum are bold but equally potentially exciting. Test cricket needs a competitive English side. Let’s see how it works out.

Lucknow Super Giants finished on 210-0 in todays IPL match - I assume this is the first time a team has not lost a wicket batting first in the IPL? Can't have happened often in all T20's to be fair.

Admittedly I had more or less of a season last year, but I spent Day 3 of CC (Div 2) Middlesex v Notts in blazing sunshine (14th May) at Lord's, shouting at Mullaney from the Warner stand, pleading for him to declare when Notts were well ahead, leaving Middlesex to chase 500-odd or something ridiculous. Day 4 was torrential downpour, so you can see how that match ended (with me nursing my hangover at home, feeling smug about Notts not declaring until Mullaney got his 100 - that'll learn him ?).

Have just put it past the resident statto, and you are correct. It’s the first time ever in IPL, and has only happened four times in the history of the T20 format, two of those matches being this month: LSG v KKR is one of them. Pint on me if you can guess the other one. ? (Honestly, it’s a great pub quiz question for those of you planning a cricket round, haha.)

Well probably a minor nation competition not even even going to try and guess

Try and think where you last had it, might remind you where you left it.
Usually works for me with my glasses?
I set them up, you nod them in etc. ? But it was though, wasn’t it? Specially if you’re biased like me. I mean, you can’t steal away Harry’s moment of glory in such an unfair manner!

What really annoys me is the money I wasted in that hopeless stadium a couple of weeks ago on a very poor burger and a pint of p1ss prior to an evening of very disappointing football nearby.

Da-daah .... I've just been catching up & read re ICC T20 Valletta Cup .... on Fri 13 May, Gibraltar scored 213-0 v Bulgaria, but last Sunday lost in a play off to the same team with a ball to spare

FYI Malta, Gibraltar, Bulgaria, Czech Rep, Hungary & Romania took part - Romania won - watch out England!
I'll never remember any of that for any future quizzes

I keep switching on Sky to watch the T20 Blast but coverage seems to be really sparse this year. Why so?

Me too.
All a bit crap innit?? ?
Gloucs v Kent on Sky tomorrow evening.
I'm at Somerset v Sussex....?

Didn't realise that England appointed Aussie women coach Matthew Mott as ODI coach yesterday. Keeping the seat warm for when Eoin Morgan gives up I imagine.

Somerset v Sussex T20 yesterday.
Lovely evening and game looked interesting until Somerset collapsed in last 6 overs to lose easily in the end...
17 ball 50 from Roussow the highlight....

My first innings in 5 or 6 years ended as so many have before... but in my defence, we needed 24 off 7 when i waddled out at number 11, so expectations weren't high...

The pitch looks better and warmer from when we played on it!

Looks like you were denied an easy single off the first ball.......?

Reckon we could've run two, lazy bloody partner!

Finals will be live on YouTube Thursday/ Friday/Saturday, I'll try to remember to post a link (on the off-chance...), i won't be playing but I'll be loitering with intent, eating pies, sweeping the pitch, etc...

Andrew Gale and others appear to have won their unfair dismissal case against Yorkshire cc.

That’s an exquisite little dab out to deep mid wicket for…. no run! ? And then the ugliest of heaves to execute your own dismissal. You’re all over the place, man. What have I told you about keeping your head still? Still, I blame your partner for not running when there was an obvious three.
