The New Points system is going to be a joke as well

Sorry Strauss you were a great player on the field but your suggestions are a load of .....

Attached is the full document

I quite like the suggestions. The one day cup becomes relevant again. Same amount of cricket between May - August but less in April and September when there are usually a fair few dodgy pitches.

What bits don't you like?

So you are content for The Hundred to stay in its current format in August ?

General Cricket Thread

6 team Leagues

10 matches

Only 3 points for a win
2 Batting points if you get over 400 even in the second innings

Friendly games in August

There's not that much county cricket left! I don't mind the Hundred mainly because I like any cricket, but prioritising it to the point that counties are barely sustainable is wrong in my view.

If the Hundred is so great, do it in two weeks, two games a day, and then do the women's tournament.

I'd rather the hundred wasn't here at all but it's clearly here to stay. I'd need to go back over the initial launch but I believe that 16 out of 18 counties voted FOR it so there's almost no chance of getting rid of it now.

Once you accept that the hundred is here to stay then I think the proposals have a lot of merit. County Championship cricket needs a shake up, the quality of pitches (even in the first division) this season has been very poor.

I agree the hundred could be shorter, you don't need a separate day for every single game.

The Vote for the Hundred went like this

ECB If you vote yes I will give you three quarters of a million

COUNTIES I will vote Yes

But this is Sky's business model

We want to show a live game of cricket on every single day of the week

Well then they can't cry about becoming irrelevant now.

Not sure saying this county doesn’t want to be irrelevant could be considered as ‘waffle’
They would still play in every competition they've played in this year so I'm not sure how this announcement makes them irrelevant?

He's not said what bits of the proposal he does or doesn't like. He's not said anything of substance really, it's waffle in my book.

No longer watch County Cricket and in reality only enjoy test matches.

The hundred creates income for the game and seems popular so can understand its importance.

If changing the County structure creates players with more “ steel” and a real hunger to win then hopefully it will be reflected in the test squads. Good players but if it came to battling in the trenches generally the Aussies would be the ones I would want next to me !!!

Popular with who? It’s the least popular format as noted by the survey commissioned by the ECB.

Bums on seats seem to be the answer, would suggest more people attend 100 game than attend every day of a county match.

I have no interest in the format but cash is king

Cheaper and free tickets are the main reason for bums on seats. The attendances are no difference from the T20 blast. I read somewhere ECB have committed to spend over £300m on The Hundred over 5/6 years. So not surprised they have left it where it is in August and the changes to county matches and test cricket have to be planned around it. But if anyone can honestly tell me it's been a success they are bonkers (despite what The ECB marketing people say) and hasn't yet attracted the world stars from overseas to participate it on it. Even Bairstow decided to give it a miss this summer.

Just think/ imagine if the ECB had thrown £300m at grass roots cricket?

Fair enough as I have no interest I just saw clips from a few games of crowded stadiums and presumed that it was genuinely attracting crowds I stand corrected and thanks for explaining

For me it can be binned with the 20/20 which I dislike even more: proper cricket is a Test match played over 5 days requiring commitment, effort skill and tactical awareness to deal with changing conditions.

Throwing money at grass roots is a wonderful ideal but like with football just won’t happen

Cheaper tickets and more money spent in the ground plus advertising = new revenue. I'm no fan of the 100 but English cricket has to find some way to compete with the revenue generated by the IPL.

I sympathise with ol Straussy, I'm in a similar position here really, trying to rejig our summer calendar... tough times...

40-over league semifinals here tomorrow, finals next weekend. I took over midseason after Estonia headhunted our former CEO - which muppet scheduled cricket here so late?! Was 4 fecking degrees this morning. Good luck with that lads. Thermos of coffee and a hundred jumpers for me as i try to do online scoring for the first time...

But most people just view it as a drinking session
I bet if you asked the crowd two days later who won the match a large amount would have no clue

I know it’s in the laws but just ruined a good finish in the womens ODI?
Just had to google as wasn't sure what you were referring too - just read up on it. I agree, simply not cricket as I know it. Within the laws maybe but not in the spirit of the game. I'd rather lose a game than win like that.

not sure The ECB needed a new format though - just needed to rejig the T20 blast which has been relatively successful in England.

Absolutely fuming it is quite simply not cricket. There are more things to life than winning even more so as India had won the series anyhow and there was still a number 11 at the crease good job they don't play social cricket in England this Indian team would struggle to find opponents to play

I've seen far worse then that in social cricket! Saw worse last weekend!

The thing that got me is she wasn't trying to gain an obvious advantage - she was barely moving and probably wasn't going to try a run anyway. I remember Buttler getting the same least year and that was fair enough because he was clearly looking to nick a run if he could. Precedent set now sadly.

When i coached the colts, they kept trying to do it to the extent that games were overrunning by 30 minutes, as it was happening once an over for no reason.
I told my team that if any of them tried it, they would be taken off from bowling - i also told the batsmen to not take the piss with their backing up and we all had a lovely, timely game of cricket.
Its a stupid law and the sooner it is changed the better.
Same as if a batsman is backing up too far, they lose the runs.

I hope that the Indian team is proud of itself. Indeed it was building up to a good finish and if that's the way that India want to win a cricket match, then good luck to them. I was hoping that the captain would withdraw the appeal, but sadly no. I heard one or two boos from the crowd and I was booing loudly from my living room.

They were clearly rattled by the fact that our nos. 9 and 11 were making a good fist of knocking off the 52 runs for the final wicket and decided to resort to such a drastic measure. Shame on them!

I'm still questioning the legality of it. She appeared to be faking to bowl - she wasn't looking down the pitch, she was watching the non striker waiting for her to leave the crease. She was never going to bowl that ball and when a bowler pulls out of a bowl it should be called a dead ball.

Imo a simple rule change would remove all controversy - when a bowler enters the non strikers batting crease, the non striker should be allowed to leave it.

General Cricket Thread

It was building to a great finish, so not good for the paying spectator.
Not sure I would go as far as saying “shame on them” but understand where that comes from.
Harsh lesson for Dean but at least it was a game that didn’t really matter.

I think what she's done is well within the rules, granted it's not great to see and there are calls for a "warning" to the batters first before then doing it, should they keep leaving their crease.

Overall it's not in keeping with the game, it's sly, but until the rules change people are free to exploit it ?

You can't run someone out off a dead ball. I maintain that she wasn't intending to bowl, she was intending to run the batsman out.

Just watched it, my word what a horrible piece of cheating. I don't care if that's within the laws of the game, she deliberately deceived the non striker by 'faking' the delivery.

The laws clearly need to be changed but in the meantime shame on the Indian team who looked so smug with themselves. Well done Charlie Dean who still shook hands after, she is a better person than I am.

General Cricket Thread

It's no better than the underarm ball IMO...technically within the laws but morally in the gutter.

They had a number 11 on strike and resorted to that because they had no confidence they could win by ability alone.

The way the Indian support in the crowd celebrated was shameful as well, I would have been utterly embarrassed if my team won a match in that fashion.

General Cricket Thread

No, it's a lot worse IMO, because a wicket is automatically lost because of what she did, which is not necessarily the case with an underarm ball, although I take your point.

I noticed that of Dean. She is a very talented cricketer and has a good future in the game.

I have only watched the highlights, did an Indian bowler warn Dean prior to this? If not, it is a horrible way to win a match and if an English player had done it I would have been embarrassed.

No. I hasten to add that this is very different to Ashwin doing it to Buttler - Buttler was trying to seek an advantage whereas Dean simply wandered out of her crease. The still picture of the bowler breaking the wickets is misleading, Dean was no more than a foot outside of her crease when the bowler stopped.

Disagree. As a slow bowler in her delivery stride, she can clearly see the batter ahead of her so has time to change her mind. Batters need to learn.

It would have been an Ivan Toney-esque no look ball then because she wasn't looking down the pitch.
