Strange comment... An injury takes as long as it takes, there are no rules.
I hurt my hip in Feb 07 (Seen specialist etc ) it still isn't right now.

Not so strange when you think it took the medical team nearly 3 months to diagnose the real problem and then send hom for the minor op .:(

Hamer & Bennett

Interesting to read he's on nearly 5k a week! Doubt he'll be joining us in a hurry, less it's Hobson's choice...

Do you believe what you read on a fan's web-site? I can't imagine that Coppell gave him a quarter-of-a-million per year contract to join their stiffs.

Have a look at this article which references Championship players wages

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2008/dec/03/championship-credit-crunch-recession

Solid players towards the top of the Championship are said to be paid £10,000-15,000 a week basic and £35,000 a week is commonly believed to be the top wage in the division.

It would not surprise me in the least if he was earning what was stated on that messageboard, especially as he's played for the Republic at International level.

Hamer & Bennett

how much of their wages do we pay?

Hamer & Bennett

If we can sign Wilson on Loan again in January then I would not be too disappointed to lose Bennett as I think Phillips has slotted into the team very well and could do a good job with Wilson. Bennett is surplus at reading but I cannot see how we could afford to sign him on a permanant basis. As for Hamer he is with us for the season unless another club comes into sign him in January from Reading. Marcus Hennemein has been linked to Tottenham, either way I think Ben will be back at Reading next season if they are still in the Championship as No 2 and could be in the side by Xmas.

Would be surprised if Wilson came back to us although stuck in BCs reserves may take him out of the limelight and help us.

As for Hamer we all think he has enormous potential and I would love to see him sign permanently but the fact that Reading only gave him a one year contract ( compare that to Wilson's four) suggests they are perhaps not as keen on him as we might think. My one reservation is that he does not have the physical size/ bulk that keepers tend to have these days.

You're joking! I sat a couple of rows back from him at Staines and he's a big lad whose at least 6'2" and doesn't seem to lack bulk either. I'd say he's got a perfect physique for a goalkeeper.

Did any of that sound a bit gay? :suspect:

He's got height but not the physique that top young keepers tend to have these days, compare him to say Hart or Hennemein or even our own Smudger...

Don't get me wrong I think he has potentially a great future ahead of him but just something that has struck me about him. He's a bit skinny...!

Hamer & Bennett

When is Bennett's loan up? Really hoping we find a way of signing him even though there's a large gap between what he is on and what we can afford. To have built our promotion push on a solid defence, would be such a waste to see it dismantled in Jan. The way he's gelled with young Wilson and now Phillips has been brilliant. Also seems to have a genuine liking for the club.

Hamer & Bennett

I suspect that AS's key objective for January will be get Bennett sorted until the end of the season at least.

All other moves will hinge on his success or otherwise as only then will he know how much or more likely little is left in the budget!

Hamer & Bennett

so last game sunday then!!!

hope nobody offers him a 'deal he can't refuse' between now and January 1st!

This is a major signing IMO for our success come May 2009!

Hamer & Bennett

But not if it breaks the Bank, he is good but not in my opinion the best centre back we have had, if we can extend his loan with not to much outlay then that will be good business, equally if we can transfer him at considerably reduced wages that will also be good.

however if we have to spend a lot then, again, in my opinion it will not be money well spent as johnson can play in that position with Philips and I have to say that whilst he has been excellent his distribution is about on par with that of Karleigh and I am always worried that he is likely to give away free kicks in and around our area with his permanent shirt pulling. I would add that this is not a snap view on Saturdays game but rather one that has increasingly built up watching a number of games.

I would love him to stay but we have been down the road of silly money to keep players in the past and I would hope that those who hold the purse strigs will bear the past in mind when agreeing to the future.

Don't think we need to;) but we DO need to sign him on a 3 year deal :sorted:

Hamer & Bennett

He will miss his next game as yesterday was his 5th yellow card; that may not be a Brentford game though.

Bennett's a clever player and gives his free kicks away when he knows that a goal is far more likely if his man gets past him. Compare this with the likes of Mackie and Griffiths who would just take the man out because he was there.

The decision on whether he stays is far more likely to lie with Reading and the player rather than Brentford.

Hamer & Bennett

Be interesting to see what sort of money we could afford to pay him if the likes of Brown and Pead move on. I'm guessing between those two you're looking at £3k per week. Would Brentford be willing to pay those kind of wages to any player even if we had the money?

Could we sign an adequate replacement on £1500 or £2000 per week. Without knowing the wage structure at the club I'm guessing on the likely wages that might be involved but I would be surprised if Bees would want to pay any player more than £2k per week max.

I suspect the outcome will be largely dependant on two factors. One Reading and two what interest there is from other clubs and if so where they are located and how much money they can offer.

Hamer & Bennett

With us not having a game on Saturday, could we send him back to Reading for the week, have him miss their game then re sign him

 He can't go back until Friday and is then cup-tied for Reading's FA Cup tie.

i would've thought the club is trying to get players on less than £1k per week, let alone spending £1500 or £2k, i would think KOC is on that and probably Brown and these are the contracts we're trying to run down, but i doubt many in the squad is on more than £1k per week now.

Ok so obviously that makes him unavailable, but would that really matter in terms of suspensions?

Or if we do, do this, will it be us in front of the FA!

Hamer & Bennett

If Droylsden get a reprieve, surely we are able to say that he will serve his ban this Saturday and the fact we aren't playing is irrelevant. :sorted:

If we can only offer him £1k per week then I suspect he will get better offers elsewhere. I just wonder if we can offer him the wage currently be paid to a couple of players, say Brown and Pead, assuming they both move on. I would love to see him stay as he has been an integral part of our success but I accept we have a budget and must be prudent at the same time.

Based on Andy's performance so far I am sure he has some irons in the fire were Bennett to leave.

Could be a fixed sum to stay the rest of the season as opposed to a long term contract perhaps?

Good player though he is, I don't think we should be offering anyone the equivalent of the joint wages of two of our (presumably) highest earners. By Lge 2 standards, Kev is probably overpaid (because of where we were when we agreed his deal), but we can't afford to put others on that money.

Even if we go up, we will have to be very careful with wages - so we'd face a
hard season in Lge One, but I'd rather get up and see how we go

Hamer & Bennett

We are probably at our highest (not only in position) but also on confidence and my worry is that once the loanees go back it will rip us apart.

Bennett is awesome, not only is he a 'very good' defender but if you watch him, he completley marshalls the back four throughout each game.

Hamer is also probably the best goalkeeper we have had at the club for years.

As players, you would think they would want to stay and at least 'finish the job' this season, but i know its not quite like that...

Surely the sensible thing for all concerned is Reading extend AB's loan until the end of the season then if we get promoted we can offer him a better deal in league one. If for some reason we don't go up AB can still find a new deal somewhere else. Him, Charlie and Marcus are our most important players and we MUST keep them and as Andy keeps saying " let's see where it takes us" :sorted:

Havind read Bennett's comments after Exeter I'm sure he would like to stay but subject to the right terms being offered.

Whether we can offer the correct terms remains to be seen. I agree with Greenholm's comments that Bennett has been excellent and because of that I'm sure other clubs have noted this and would also be interested.

as Bennett is out of contract June 09 he can now go ahead and sort out a precontract agreement with someone else, so he could go back to Reading, earn his £3k or whatever and move on in July 09, so as not to get injured and ruin a contract offer. The ball is all in Bennett's favour, HE can choose where he goes and what offer to take up. BFC can make an offer but i doubt if it will be up there in wages he may get offered from a League 1 or Championship club. Hope he does stay and see out his last 6 months of his Reading contract with us. We'll have to wait and see, he's suspended for Lincoln and his last game should be at home v Notts Co on the 17th Jan, unless he resigns for us on loan.

Hamer & Bennett

It has got to be a priority to sign Bennett.
If (when) we go up, I think Hamer would be happy to sign permanently, and we have him here until the end of the season.
Bennett, on the other hand, will be part of the reason we get promoted - and signing him up should be the no.1 aim for January.
I don't see any other real urgency apart from getting AB on board.

Re: fear of losing Bean, Mac etc... I really can't see the board or AS authorising the sale of any but our fringe players. It would have to be a mega bid to let go of a key player when we are pushing for automatic promotion. (A DJ kind of sum? :fishing:)

As Bennett has now returned to Reading, does this mean his ban for 1 game will be Reading's match this weekend (FA Cup) or Reading's next league match? Or is he 'banned' from playing 1 game for Brentford?

http://www.thefa.com/TheFA/Disciplinary/SuspensionLists/ it has Elder here, and surprisingly Montague for a 3 match ban too!

http://www.thefa.com/TheFA/Disciplinary/SuspensionLists/PendingPlayers.htm Bennett is here under 'pending', banned from 4/1/09 until Brentford complete 1 game. But wil this also include Reading?
