Fiorentina were much the better side and deserved the win as they also got the woodwork three times.i don't think that would have been a pen in the PL.Thiago didn't get a touch in the second half. Tbh didn't look like a £30m player to me
How much would you say Ivan Toney is worth based on his recent performances?

I presume you all watched the game then
I watched the game and it was clear that CB were being overrun in midfield and the service to Thiago was non-existent.

I therefore doubt it was the best game to judge Thiago’s abilities.

However, as you have been able to decide on last nights performance alone that Thiago is not worth £30m, I’d strongly suggest getting on the blower to Phil Giles. The club can save a fortune on scouting in the future.

I personally didn't, but you didn't respond to my question about how much you think Toney is worth based solely on his performances in the last couple of games!

You cannot judge a player's worth based on one performance! And especially not a striker playing for a side who were (apparently) outplayed for most of the game.

I presume you all watched the game then ?
I did. What I saw was Club Brugge pretty much penned in their own half and getting deeper as the game went on, which meant Thiago also had to come deeper just to get a touch. The referee had a shocker and booked him for something he'd never get booked for in the premier league and as a result he was wary of putting a foot in anywhere. Overall a poor team performance and with zero service to Thiago it was pretty much what you would expect. And for the record, Fiorentina are a horrible side and I hope they get tonked by Olympiakos.

Didn't he wasn't worth £30m pointed out based on last night's performance he didn't look like a £30m player ?

Hopefully he is...some people very jumpy

No. I didn't watch the game. My question to you was, "Has there ever been a player that you really rated?". I ask, because I've seen many posts where you state you don't rate a particular player. I'm sure you've got loads of posts you can point me too where you're full of praise for A N Other. Be good for once, to see a post of yours that I could like / agree with.

I wonder what you feel a £30M player should look like? Below is Phil Giles's reported view.

Out of interest, how many of his games have you watched?

My word Brugge were crap , hard to judge him in that performance .He made an effort though , and as I said last week lets wait a few months until he's linking up with Bryan etc, through balls from Mikel , shame Reg wont be putting in the cross's next season , Rico's a bit crap at that ,

Probably their worst game in the last 10 that I've watched. Still unbeaten at home since February though! Shame there were so many Bees fans watching that as anyone that's watched any of their previous games would know that that is very much a one off.

Difficult game for him last night. He didn't do much (Italian defences are traditionally very difficult to play against) , but there again the whole Brugge team were pretty poor on the night. The only surprise to me was that it took Florentina so long to wrap the tie up.

It’s so easy to forget that we only signed the one player, not the whole Brugge team. BFC will give him specific coaching for the role seen for him and he’ll play in a team that will have a style of play suited to that role. I think we’ll need to wait until after the September international break before making any sort of judgement… but there’s always Borehamwood for those with itchy trigger fingers.

It's also important to remember that the reported fee is £31m including add ons. The initial fee is significantly lower than £31m, therefore saying things like "he doesn't look like a £30m player" or "we overpaid for him" miss the context that we'll only end up paying £31m for him if he's a success at BFC.

So, what went wrong. CB were excellent (and by far the better team) up until their goal!
Then, La Viola had three good chances before half time.
It looked to me that the tactics were all wrong after half time allowing the visitors the initiative.
Inexperienced manager?
Young naive team?

Tks. I knew there was something weird. I guess I'm just waiting to see him play before I buy in.
I'm buying in before seeing him play cos we sure as hell won't be getting anyone else. He gets my total support from 1st July.

Yep all of the above I think. There was no link between the midfield and the forwards (sounds like the Ivan Toney thread currently) and they just went deeper. Nicky Hayen hasn't been in the job long and has done wonders but this was probably his first experience barring last weeks reverse match where the opposition took the game to Club Brugge. You're clearly a Fiorentina fan mate, but I really didn't enjoy their style of play. They've got good players but seem to feel the need to sh*thouse their way to victory.

A bit like the Brentford at Luton and the Brentford at home to Fulham?

I thought Thiago worked hard and linked play well. Would have had an assist if his team mate had been a bit more switched on. I like the look of him.

Fair point. Much as Ronaldo looked far from being one of the most outstanding players in world football when he got subbed off at 4-0 down at half time at the Gtech.

I thought our best player was Dodo but, IMHO, we have a better right back in Michael Kayode, an under 21 Italian international.
We have already touched on the Italian "style" of play but it is not as prevalent as, say the 1990s, especially in Serie A matches which is awash with players from all around the world. I haven't missed a Viola game this season (thanks to TNT).
sh*thousery is rife worldwide and is not unique to Italian football.
I don't think Fiorentina have fulfilled their potential in the league this season as Vincenzo Italiano, the manager, keeps chopping and changing the team.
However, they get the job done somehow in European matches and I would much prefer to play Olympiakos than Villa in the final, even though Piraeus is just ten miles from Athens where the final is.
I think, with better players around him, Thiago will do well for The Bees; certainly a very useful addition to the squad.
Good luck to Club Brugge for the future (same colours as Colliers Wood United btw)!

The Athletic reported that the initial fee was around €33m or £27.5m. Not quite as low as I remembered (I had £25m my head) but still not £31m upfront.

33M€ is the figure that was bandied about at the time. Closer to £29mn at today's rates… I hope the Club bought forward!

I do remember that you commented the first time you saw Bryan play at home at GP that you didn't think he was worth the money (or you expected more for what we paid for). Bryan turned out well. Have faith and don't change

The fee we have paid 'maybe' not what he is worth now but probably cheaper if we tried to sign him a season later and then he would potentially be out of our price range.

Although I did say I expected more from hickey and I still think that !

just got injured, in tears on the bench, doesn't look good
To be fair, if he's sat on the bench then I wouldn't say it's massively serious. Tears could because if minor he may not get a proper send off?

If he'd gone straight down the tunnel I would be more concerned.
