Great shame for the lad but he will return when he is ready and therefore it would make no sense to splash out “ big” money on any replacement that will become surplus to requirements in due course.

No point discussing new contracts for Ivan, we know he wants to go and ultimately we will recieve offers for him which providing they are not stupid the club will accept.

We coped without Ivan last term with Brian and Wissa looking the part and there is no reason that can’t be replicated this season, I would put in a caveat that signing Maupay may not be the worst idea out there.

Whilst posters are naturally concerned I am pretty certain that the club will be more relaxed and accept it as one of those things, let’s face it he could equally have picked up an injury after Ivan had gone. As a plus it gives Thomas time to work on tactics that don’t require a target man.

Yes any player can get injured at any time but a serious and long term injury after 45 minutes of a pre season friendly for a record signing means I don't think there is any way that you can make this look anything but seriously bad news.

I am sure the club will work their way round it somehow but at the moment ( assuming Toney is going) then its put the dampers on the start to the season.

I just wanted to make sure that I have this correct.

A player that has never played for us is going to get us relegated,Is that correct?
Also he's replacing a player that is an England International that we are sh*tting ourselves that we don't have an offer for? Is that seriously correct?

Are we out of our tiny minds?

Christ, some of the drivel on here...

Sad for the lad. Sure he'd have loved to get up n running asap. But it happens.

Should not affect Toney etc. This could easily have happened on 1st Sept after all. If we planned on having 5 quality forwards to choose from (Igor, Schade, Wissa, Mbeumo and KLP), we surely would have been accounting for one of them to have at least a couple of months out - given our track record, it would be madness not to :)
But i daresay we were planning on having someone else anyway - be it Toney or another young recruit with potential once Ivan leaves.

Ivan needs a buyer. If there is no buyer, we can't sell him. And in that scenario, does he sit around on lower wages for another year, or can we tempt him somehow?

All this must drive Matt crackers. How many of his recent big-money investments have had issues? Ajer's 3 seasons in with regular small injuries... Hickey missed nearly all of last season... Damsgaard taken nearly two years to get up to scratch... Schade unavailable for the majority of his time here so far... but it is what it is, there's just no way of guaranteeing their health...

For some reason, i keep thinking of Farid el Alagui (was that his name ? ) - feels like we've had "more than our fair share" over the last 15yrs! (And yet we keep on keeping on...)

Good post.

Then add in

Hogan
Judge
Bjellend (sp)
Rico

And this is all very mild compared to the collective meltdown the piss stained sheets brigade are having on Twitter.

We definitely had a run of losing one a year to an ACL. Rico and Hogan had two each, of course. But again, if anyone thinks Phil and his team aren't analysing that versus the generally expectable rates within the business etc etc, they're just not paying attention.

Did Rico do his knee before?

It's possible to acknowledge that bad news is bad news...there's no point dressing it up all the time.

It's not the end of the f***ing world though is it? Especailly when we have this guy as a replacement!

Each to their own depair I guess.

Sure. The over reaction is (always) the issue. It's why i find this site awful after we lose - I'm also annoyed that we lost, and don't wanna read through loads of people stating the bloomin obvious and concluding the worst etc etc... it's tiresome.

One day, one day when all the injury gods align we WILL be contenders.
I am 68 and not confident of being around to see it. ??

For some reason middlesbro away sticks in my mind... and bloody Newcastle this time! Might find he has "north east flu" in future!
"Henry returned fit for the start of the 2017–18 season, but his season was ended on his eighth appearance by an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in a 2–2 draw with Middlesbrough on 30 September 2017, which required surgery. Henry returned to full-contact training in October 2018 and on 24 November, he made his first appearance for nearly 14 months, coincidentally against Middlesbrough, with a late substitute appearance in a 2–1 defeat."

I agree and I often take a few days off the GPG after a loss. But pretending everything is rosey when something's gone wrong is also tiresome.

It's bad news, but it happens. We're probably not getting relegated, hopefully one or two more signings will reduce any chance that we do have.

This.
MB has previously posted on here about the effect of booing and the emotional intelligence of TF and our coaching team.
Some fans should take note.

Of course and i have no idea on how either injuries compare but i still prefer to live in the sunshine rather than the upside down.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with being realistic. A tennis player getting back after few weeks isn’t a gauge of when IT will be back, they have basically said 5-6 months so let’s just accept that and crack on.

You wait until we sell Toney, get the popcorn out. How can you sell your best player when his replacement is injured etc etc. worst DoF in football history etc etc

I can hear the sound of Neal Maupay’s agent’s phone ringing…..

Don’t answer it.

Yeah, his sh*thousing is quite funny, but it really isn’t helpful and was in fact more detrimental to us last season. He hasn’t got the pace for our style of football, he did good last season but going into this I want to be on the front foot, not paddling to keep afloat again.

We have better in the squad.

Scored, arguably, our most important goal of the season though.
Winner v Forest.
And a few other key ones too.....

I wonder if, in hindsight, playing him in the Wimbledon friendly was too soon for a player who had only just begun to get used to our training methods, and has
Finished last season with a knee injury.

Igor Thiago

I would agree that "expected to return" to you and me and everyone else would mean being available for selection. But does it mean "expected to start"?

Anyway, "expected to" is very different from "will". As we all know.
Expected to return might also just mean expected to return to training. Might not be match fit for some time after.

We’ll be fine, I’ve no doubt about that, but this is a big blow.

No room for sentiment, we are going for top 10, possible Euro push this season, we can't give a contract to someone who isn't good enough based on an important goal last year. Alex Ferguson got rid of Robbins pretty sharpish and he scored the goal that arguably saved his career before he had won 1 trophy.

How can you play too soon, if you are fit the sooner you get working on the system the better. He twisted his knee, it happens, we need to stop looking for someone to blame.

Just asking the question chief.

While it's terrible news, compared to the situation we were in back in December, I'm more than happy starting the season with a fully-fit trio of Mbeumo, Schade and Wissa (plus any game time we get from Toney being an added bonus).

Trouble is the old injury curse, we have enough out already without hardly a ball kicked.

Igor Thiago

This is the benefit of having a versatile front 3. Wissa and mbeumo have shown they can carry the torch and play up top when called upon. Shade probably could do too with a bit of guidance

Don’t start being all sensible and realistic on here
