Jeez! Will we never learn?!!!!!
We could be up with Colchester United today if we had thought beyond our nose when someone flashes a couple of quid under it. We not only lost a great goalscorer and promotion but we cost ourselves a bundle in lost cash well in excess of the 500K quid we got for DJ. Furthermore, relegation to League Two will only swell the amount lost.

Jo has never made it beying this division. We need him to score the goals to fire us back up next season. Funny how in our worst season ever we have a striker who could end up with fifteen goals at least.

I believe (abee will put me right) that he signed for 1 year but we have the option of another year. That means, as far as I understand, that he can't go anywhere until we've decided on the option.

I don't think there is any great need to at the moment. I guess with our finances as they are, you don't want too commit to early or perhaps, with the activity in the transfer window, it just hasn't been discussed yet.
Hopefully, this is a non-issue.

I think the practical reasoning is that we have to do it be some date, say May 30. Until that day we promise we will. If his knee blows out or some such, then we won't have to pay him to garden and ride a stationary bike all next year. Cynical, but these are cynical times.

We need to stop drinking the Kool-Ade. It's OK being a selling club but the key has got to be in the timing. A few weeks before almost guaranteed promotion and a huge boost in revenues, attendance and fans is not the time to sell your prime asset. That goes for double when his value is rising daily. The lost revenues resulting from this year's debacle at Griffin Park can all be laid at the door of that decision to sell DJ when we did. If we are going to develop Ide and Kuffour for a few months just to sell them again before we achieve any advancement we might as well all go home now.
Brentford FC is a business and any successful business takes calculated risks in order to succeed. Brighton sold Zamora after they made it to League One, not just when they were poised to win promotion. It's not rocket-science.

perhaps interestingly in the BCFC situation, their manager Steve Bruce is bleating about the fact that the sale of Matthew Upson to West Ham would have a detrimental effect on the dressing room at BCFC..............the exact same thing of course to what our then manager, MA, said at the time if he had kept DJ............. and that it was by selling DJ, and letting others in the dressing room know that if they performed, they would go on to bigger and better things, that kept the morale in the dressing room...........sadly, because of the misguidedness of the BFC policy, that is exactly what Turner, Sodje and (above all) Tabb did at the end of the last season...........and how the hell did we manage to give Stephen Hunt to Reading, the performances he's putting in right now in the Premiership beggar belief...................

LesB, I think this is going to come back and bite us on the arse!
This is a non decision that I can not understand and it will have repercussions similar to Jay Tabb imo if it is not sorted sooner rather than later.
As I have debated with abee already if we have the option it will be at the same terms I presume so there is no decision for me, tie him to a contract asap because he is in a rich vein of form, his best season tally has already been beaten, he has pace which all the Prem and Cham clubs scouts look for first, we will need him next season whichever division we are in and most importantly at 26 his transfer value will peak soon and then drop as he gets closer to 30.
We have to sell him at some point and take any transfer value we can get, the decision to the when and how much will be dictated by the length and value of his contract.

I'm very confused with what you are saying, for a change.
The club has the option on Kuffour, no-one has any idea of the terms, but the one thing for sure is that we don't need to do anything now.
He can't walk for free, if we have offers we take up the option, if he gets a long term injury we can renogotiate or let him walk and if we go down and have to cut our cloth we might not be able to afford him.
Too often we have taken early decisions on contracts and tied our hands budget wise, you are proposing doing the same thing now when it is completely unneccesary. It's nonsense.
If we sign him for an extra year today and he gets an 18 month injury tomorrow how foolish will we look.

This contract style that offers a year one contract with a one year option suits us. However does the option have to be the same length as the contract ie can we offer a one year contact with an option for 2 or 3 years?

Don't see any reason why you couldn't offer a contract on those terms - though I'd expect the player in that case to demand more in the original year, as if he does really well he could end up being on similar terms for 3 or 4 years :shrug:

What a load of bollux! We sold every decent player we've had over the past twelve years or more, DJ Campbell being one of the latest, and so far that has "stepped us forward" ,as you put it, into a fight for our lives to avoid relegation to League Two and beyond and a debt the size of Mount Kilimanjaro.Everytime we sell a player for good money, it's a small step forward.

At least we're trading - who knows what would have happened if we hadn't sold the players we did in the last year. In an ideal situation, the money gets re-invested in the club - in our case it keeps the wolf from the door. It's pretty much what every club tries to do.

I hear what you're saying Les but I have been watching Brentford sell off or otherwise lose the services of good players for decades starting with Jimmy Hill and Ron Greenwood in the fifties all the way up to DJ Campbell and half of Reading FC. I think a club which has that mentality finds it difficult to think in any other terms about the way to run the business.
I have to think that getting promotion has to be the core goal of a football club so that business risks and fund-raising all fall under that objective. It's not an easy problem to solve but the way we have been doing it hasn't seemed to work very well. We either count ourselves among the Rochdales and Orients of football or we aspire to what has been achieved at Charlton, Plymouth, Barnsley or even Colchester and the like. If we showed some progress maybe a white knight might even happen along like Whelan, Sir Elton or Majeski did at their clubs.

Willock is not as quick, therefore has more to do, from a Ship lay off....therefore I would have thought he would have been better placed further upfield than the Ship
