At the moment, I don't have a lot of confidence in his ability to deal with the high ball. But that will be/is being worked on. There was the disallowed goal, when a goalkeeper is required to be strong and claim the ball out of the air. It was frustrating to see how he dealt with it; he didn't.

The knock down from Hickey I wanted to see him react decisively and clear the ball. He looked to shepherd it out and was caught out dithering.

In the UK goalkeepers aren't protected from any physical contact, as they are on the continent. He will have to learn quickly & expecting to get the benefit of the doubt from officials won't work in England, like it does in the bundesliga. He looked like he expected a free kick for the disallowed goal - he got lucky.

No doubt he will just need a little time, which is frustrating when it costs us points, but just have to be patient, support him and know he will come good. Despite his age, he's less experienced of English football than Raya was, when he joined.

the knock down from Hickey !!!!! Flekken has been totally stitched up here by Hickeys inability to deal with a simple cross. It was never a penalty, and Flekken was stitched up royally !

The disallowed goal you’re referring to, was ruled out for a foul on the keeper ( ie Flekken)

I was disappointed at times today especially with the disallowed goal and there was a point in the game that I thought he lacked confidence in catching the ball which is not what you want from a GK.

I think there's already a couple of examples of a sort of combined mistake involving flekken and a defender (and the ref on this occasion). I hope that more and more games will help them gel better and improve the communication and so I still am quite optimistic about him. So far he's made good saves and has had good distribution with the mistakes making it easier to have a negative view.

I think its called "Fosu syndrome" - if somebody never plays, they become some sort of fabled saviour
To be fair I can think of worse ideas than giving him another try. He could be chomping at the bit to prove a point and turn out to be a fabled saviour. Who knows? If not, so be it.

I watched the game today in silence in the company of 5 blokes who between them support 3 different teams, none of them God's chosen one. All were of the impression that this guy isn't a goalkeeper they'd want in their team and one of them supports Leyton Orient ffs! In my opinion I don't think we've got anything to lose by switching things around.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

I suppose it's just the stability really and flekken has already made some big saves so he's not entirely useless. I'm not against the idea though, I just want to not think about the keeper this much while watching a match anymore haha

I do, what message does it send out to Flekken if we bin him after 6 games?
Games where he hasnt been shockingly poor and deserving of being dropped, but just dropping him "to give the other bloke a chance" - the other bloke being somebody that seems to be injured for 9/10s of the season.

I think his distribution is rubbish. But yes, maybe that will improve with time, understanding and building a relationship with his defence. Or maybe I've just been spoilt by that bloke who sits at the front of the West Stand at The Emirates. ?‍♂️

That we're giving you a break because you appear to be unable to catch a football and we really can't spare the points at the moment?

Which would destroy the blokes confidence (which he doesnt seem to have a problem with at the moment) and he would have to be selected again 2 games later when Strakosha was inevitably injured, just minus any confidence he had.
Really not a very good idea at all, so luckily there is zero chance of it happening.

Had a bad day…. Sure he will learn from this and the coaching staff will work on the issues

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Was it that bad a day? Fouled for a disallowed goal, gave away a non penalty. What else was there?

couple of really poor flaps, in fact it was a crazy waft at a ball that he flapped straight to one of theirs when he could have let it run out of play that started his 10 minutes of pressure resulting in a poor penalty decision against him

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Very odd today. No distribution and some very very very strange decisions to punch. One was when it was a dolly catch and no-one within 300 miles of him. I mean ACTUAL MILES.
It was possibly the most bizarre piece of play from a Brentford player i've seen since Jake Bidwell took a free kick against Hull away a few years ago directly in front of the Hull penalty area and managed to slice the ball so badly into the side line it almost ended up behind him, also if Flekken insists on punching the ball instead of doing the obvious and catching it or letting it run out of play, please punch it like Larry holmes and not Larry Grayson.

All keepers make howlers even the best of them. One of our previous Raya had a few. Flekken was poor on not commanding his area for their disallowed goal but also made a great save. Would be knee jerk to drop him.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Agree. The one learning point he should be focusing on is catching the ball. Raya was the same I seem to remember.

He had a shocker today, but I still think he will be ok in the long term.
In the long term he will have packed up, and be retired somewhere!

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

At least he went the right way for the penalty. ?‍♂️

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

If its the one im thinking of he could of let it sail out of play for a GK.
Nope
Thought the same
But watching the replay, it would have stayed in play, and ended up with the W@ncastle player on their left wing.....

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Made a great stop. As per Palace there was a moment where defender and keeper left ball to each other and it resulted in a goal

the disallowed Wilson goal looked soft though

early days still, think he will still be immense

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Think back to Raya and how poor he was. People judge too quickly. Yes, he’s an international player, but he’s had a few months with our coaches not 3-4 years like Raya. Asking for Strakosha to start in cup matches is laughable. The bloke is “injured” all the time and probably doesn’t want to be here. The biggest waste of space we’ve had in a while.

Flekken will be good. It’s just time…….

He made one good save but was poor in the second half.He made a very half hearted punch when it was easier to catch .Was extremely weak on the disallowed goal and then have away a needless pen when admitedly
Hickey was more culpable .

A punch when he should have caught it. A couple of poor clearances. No, it wasn’t a pen but he (and Hickey’s poor touch) gave the ref a decision to make.

It was a poor goal keeping performance. Even his distribution was all over the place.

One to forget. Even saw the GK coach motioning over to him to keep his head and think at one point

I agree with this punched where he should of caught the ball and looked suspect from crosses.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Let’s not sugar coat things, it was a dire second half. He was incredibly weak and fortunate with the disallowed goal, needlessly gave the ref a decision to make with the pen (Hickey at fault as well) and the decision making with some of the punches beggared belief, to say nothing of the fact the connection was terrible.

Not saying he should be dropped, he’s played well enough before yesterday, is a Netherlands #1 and we’re invested in him.

New keepers in the PL have bad days, it happens, but let’s not pretend that his performance was fine.

If I was Sean Dyche I would be planning on bombarding him at every opportunity.

Will be interesting to see how he bounces back.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

One save kept us in the game.

Their penalty

a - wasn’t a foul
b - came from a hospital pass from Hickey

It wasn’t a convincing performance with some strange punches, but equally I don’t feel like today’s defeat can be pinned on him at all.

I’ve seen enough so far to know that sticking with him is the right call. Only concern will be if his confidence takes a knock, and as long as we are behind him then that won’t be a problem.
Clearly, some on here aren't, which is ludicrous after so few games and some excellent distribution and saves so far. Building up his confidence and understanding with our defence is bound to take time.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Confidence is a huge factor in goalkeeping. A large number of our incredibly uninformed fanbase seem to think that slating Flekken, or suggesting that he should be replaced with Strakosha, will somehow improve his confidence and in turn his level of performance.

Yeah, that’ll work.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

His distribution is the best ive seen from a Brentford Goalkeeper.

The massive worry is his ability to command the area or simply catch a ball from a cross. He isn't a kid and I am shocked. I wouldn't expect that from full international for Holland with big reviews from Germany.

The jury is out, although I believe he will come good.

There was one in the second half , saw clearly that the ball was going out for a goal kick , he punched , but did he have a call from the defence to leave it.

As for the penalty that was a dodgy decision why did he not stay tight to his post . I don’t think Gordon would have got to the ball and pulled it back

Give the lad a break outfield players can make a number of mistakes , Wissa yesterday, if keepers make a mistake it results in a goal

He's 30 years old? Surely his PE teacher covered that?
Perhap, perhaps not. If he grew up in the Netherlands there may have been a different emphasis on how to play for example, 'don't catch it, punch it'. Regardless of what was 'covered', I'd expect BFC staff to act on what they assess rather than leaving someone to their own devices.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

They definitely did a job on MF particularly in the second half to hassle him and to stop him distributing the ball quickly.
The ref unfortunately was poor in this respect.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Just seen a number of re runs of Flekkins attempt to get the ball, if he had be brave and dive for the ball , he would have got it or got a free kick for Gordon’s challenge , had to be brave
