Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Made a good punch under pressure in the first half, a few routine saves here and there. He looked calm with the ball at his feet throughout, and his handling and general technique look very good.

On the 1st and 3rd goals there's nothing he could do about either, unlucky with the 3rd as he nearly gets his leg to it.

On the 2nd goal, he should probably be doing better. For a 6 foot 6 guy he should be looking to dominate his 6 yard box at the very least... but so should Ajer, Collins and Pinnock who were nowhere to be seen.

Coaches need to be practicing coming for crosses all day every day from now until the end of the season. The rest of his game looks to be all there.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

The defence don’t look comfortable with him at all.
I think that is part of the problem.
Flekken is lacking confidence and the defence in front of him therefore doesn't have confidence in him, which leads to confusion and mistakes.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

He’s no Raya…I’m not even sure he’s as good as any of the keepers before….something about him makes me worried every time a cross comes in…he never seems to save anything ?

His punch , when he should have caught, did lead to the first goal, didn't command his area for the second. Third was after a mistake from Collins.

You're talking absolute bullshit I'm afraid.

Flekken is first being jostled by Doucoure, and then has to jump to reach the ball while being backed into by Tarkowski which knocks him over. Punch is the least risky option in that situation... very easy to fumble a catch like that under pressure.

Punch clears the danger area and there's time for the defence to reset before the next cross comes in.

Spot on. He should be working on nothing else in the coming weeks.
He was actually stood behind his goal line when the header came in.

Train wreck back 4, anonymous front 3 and an ineffectual midfield and everyone’s banging on about the GK performance. ?
Because despite all of that, 1, perhaps 2, of the 3 goals happened because of his weakness in the air. Outfielders playing poorly shouldn’t make the keeper immune to criticism.

Nope. Sorry.

Goal 1 - Punch and Mbeumo header means ball far enough away. Cross goes in. We lose the first header. Second chance to win the ball. Collins (think). Not tight enough. Goal.

Goal 2 - Has to get through 6-8 players. I actually thought he got blocked a bit. Tarks free header. Who’s marking him?

Goal 3 - Collins. Dolly day dreaming.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

All of that….and the keeper ain’t no great shakes…let’s be honest about it ?
Far as I’m concerned, Flekkens pen cost us the game @ Newcastle. Today. I think he was blameless. Whether he’s any good or not. Time will tell. Playing behind that performance today. He’d need 6 arms.

Absolutely no point in digging out a particular player after that performance. The midfield failed to stop crosses coming in and the defenders failed to deal with those crosses; Flekken was on a hiding to nothing.

For the first goal the punch didn't clear the box. If Mbeumo (who was inside the penalty area) got his head to it that would have increased the distance the ball went, it certainlty didn't stop it from going further.

Blameless…. Really ?

IMHO he punched the ball into an area that there were only Everton players. He really wasn’t under pressure and managed to punch with both hands, if he can punch cleanly he can and should and could have caught it. I’ve defended him within our group, however I’m beginning to think some of their worries may be correct. I sincerely hope the club and coach him into catching the ball rather than punching.

He punched the ball out towards the left side of the box, away from danger. Mbeumo headed it so it’s not right to say there were only Everton players. If you watch it on Sky, the commentator says “Decent punch” and the crowd cheer. No way he should have tried to catch it with a big unit jumping by him (and no defenders). Losing the header and terrible defending by Collins caused the goal.

No one cheered around us. Most of us said “Oh Feck”. He might get away with punching on the continent but he won’t here . He’ll get sussed out very quickly as he may have been this afternoon. His punch will only go about 20/ 30 yards at best so opposition teams will load that area to return the ball quickly and pressure us, as what happened today. So maybe he’s already been Sussed. He catches us the ball stays in his hands pressure on us relived, as Raya would have done in this instance. Also if a big lump jumps into him we get a free kick.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Who knows how good he will turn out to be? But the margins are so tight in this league that not being quite as good as Raya allied to no Toney, no Henry, missing out on some signings can mean wins become defeats.

Ironically I’m not a huge fan of Flekken but he was in no way, shape or form the problem today. There’s not a single starting player IMO who has a better game than Flekken and a number of the team who were awful.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on that point.. Probably our very worst game since we’ve been promoted. We’re are losing quality first team players at an amazing rate at the moment and it doesn’t bode well.

Only one person to blame and that the person recruiting our keepers. The last 4 have looked awful. I wish we had gone down the route of signing a keeper that has played in the Premier League as a safe option.

You are mugging yourself off now.

Flekken wasn't responsible for any of those goals

Plus we just sold Raya for a record fee.

Pick your battles.

certainly a question of fault for their second, where was he !?

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Have a look at it again and tell me it was his fault that someone had a free header. Go on. I dare you.

he retreats to his line, i want my goalkeeper commanding the 6 yard box. As for the free header, you leave MJ marking Tarky then there is only one winner

So. Got it know. It's Flekken's fault.

Tell me how he gets the ball before Big Ears? By have 20' long arms?

Well for a start where is he in that pic, I’m questioning whether he could have been more commanding in the area, he gets rooted to the line

Yeah. He’ll come through about 8 players and batter them all of the the way.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

just watched it back, had a great starting position three or four yards out and if he backed himself would have got a punch in, but retreated to the safety of his line and was no help

Can't agree about the mugging off, he give zero confidence to our defence and even if none of the goals were directly his fault he doesn't feed anybody with any trust. What has the transfer fee for Raya to do with the last 4 keepers we have bought in.

no doubt if he was in the pic with an arm punching air you'd be saying "what the f*** is he doing challenging when he has no chance of winning the ball".

Because Flekken was as much to blame as you were for that goal.

Well in all fairness they probably will on the GK's thread. Plenty of criticism being thrown at all the other players on other threads. Let's be honest he wasn't great today along with almost everyone else in red & white stripes.

The punched ball was not going out of the area. Any header from Mbuemo would have made it go further, it would not have caused it go a shorter distance. I was pointing this out, I didn't think the ball was cleared "far enough away" despite what the commentry stated.

Mbeumo could have headed it backwards?…

Each to their own opinion but a lot happened after that punch before the ball went in the net

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Why isn't he coming for a cross that's headed in from 6 yards ? Did the same for the first goal by punching instead of catching.he picks the ball out of the net alot.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

You evens as a team, so unless there is an obvious ricket saying X or Y is responsible for a goal is a fools errand. Everton are a very tall and physical team. They had a significant aerial advantage all over the pitch. Even Pinnock lost many of his duels with Beto. So our dilemma at corners was being unable to match height with height. Schade missing exacerbated this and we already know how Toney improves our defending. As an ex Keeper I’d judge the box too crowded and the corner delivered relatively flat and with pace for a keeper to go for it. Balls on the edge of the 6 yard box are the keepers “ corridor of uncertainty “. If Flekken had got a fist to it he could have deflected it away and out. However it’s likely he’d be on the ground and scrambling as Everton recycle a ball back in.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

And that is part of the problem, we have everyone back in the box defending.
No one left on the outer edges to pick up clearances.
Ball is hoisted back in time and time again, why the fek we have MB, KLP, Wissa marking giants, when two of those fastest players can be waiting for the clearance, to start an attack?

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

I don't think he did much wrong yesterday. I'm sat at the opposite end of the ground for their second so couldnt tell if he was at fault.

A ball floated into the six yard box, headed from the centre of goal about 4 yards out and you're saying he has no chance of getting it? You know he's allowed to jump and put his arms up right?

How is he mugging himself off for saying his opinion please explain ? Flekken has looked dire from crosses doesn’t come out for them and scares the life of you he doesn’t command his area enough for me.
