It's not a centre back's job to leave a winger uncontested at a corner

You are right Les, it is also a centre back’s job to header the ball clear when a cross comes in before his attacking opponent gets a head on the ball.

Do you honestly think a good centre back would have not headed that cross clear?

I actually think Phillips will improve with the more games he plays but I don’t think he is at the level Wilson is at, and that was the point.

What utter bolloxs!! What bloody chance did he have to clear that? It was laid on a plate because the whole team switched off. Why blame him?? I too thought Wilson was outstanding but don't start a witchhunt on his replacement just for the sake of it!!! I despair!!

Mark Phillips

Phillips has done nothing wrong and deserves praise for his efforts so far. I will be the first to say he is poo but he hasn't looked it at all, the bloke is probably loving just playing again after his injury and his upbeat appearance during his bench sitting days at GP was a credit to him IMO.

I did not realise that I am starting a witch-hunt and I am very disappointed that you have taken my comments out of context. Using foul language at me is not fair either.
In no terms am I slating the guy for the sake of it. I just felt he could have done better in terms of defending that cross. That applies for all of the players in the box at that time as well. The reason why I am specifically mentioning Wilson is because this thread is about Wilson. Surely you must understand that.
Our opinions differ but that is life, accept it.

I actually think Wilson will be a good defender for Brentford (I’ve already said this in a previous post) and I think Scott should pursue playing him at the back as he will only get better.

It's not but we'll let it pass. I think most Bees fans would put Wilson on their wish list ahead of Phillips but we're unlikely to get that happy choice.

No witch-hunt from me, the more voices the better but I think you are very wrong on this one and will take pleasure;) in telling you.:sorted:If I agreed with with you then I might have been quiet but that would be boring.

Genuine apologies if my language upset you. Let me remove the words bollox & replace with "nonsense" & remove the word "bloody" completely. The rest I stand by but do recognise that you have stated that you have no wish to start a witch-hunt. Let's support the lad as he settles in.

Mark Phillips

Good post Newport Pagnell Bee and I will do my very best to support Phillips when I watch the Bees play.
I really hope he becomes an instrumental player for us.

Mark Phillips

he strikes me as an uncomplicated defender, which suits me just fine :sorted:

Mark Phillips

Done nothing wrong to date. Good solid uncomplicated defender with some nous and even a bit of pace. Good start.

Mark Phillips

He has slotted in nicely. Good player who if he stays fit will be better than most in this division.

Mark Phillips

This man has come into the side as a result of James Wilson returning to Bristol City. He has quietly gone about his business and formed a good partnership with Alan Bennett.

He reads the game well, is a strong tackler and is only let down, in common with Bennett, Osborne and sometimes Dickson, by his distribution because they all bring the ball down and try to play it when better decision making would have = hoof!!

He deserves a little bit of the plaudits because he's not likely to get them otherwise although, to be fair, he can look dangerous at corners :sorted:

He is very eager to score his first goal for Brentford ;-)
You can hopefully read an interview with Mark Phillips this coming Saturday in the Chesterfield programme ... if we play them this coming Saturday.

Mark Phillips

nope, that'll have to wait! but well done to Mark Phillips, he's had some very steady games and has gone about his job at CB quietly and with confidence. Here's to more of the same.

Mark Phillips

What a find, never gets many votes on MOM threads but this minimum 7 out of 10 merchant has been superb. He can hardly walk but can certainly run and is part of the best CB partnership in our league.

totally agree.

once wycombe sold Wiliamson to watford, the Bees now have probably the best 2 CB's in the Division.

He's been fantastic hasn't he. just goes about the job with little fuss. And to think we were all worried about James Wilson going back. With BJ and KO as back up, we have an embarrassment of riches for this league.

As a pair, Phillips and Alan Bennett are just so solid; calm, assured, experienced and absolutely no-nonsense defending. This transmits even with a less experienced partner, like Karleigh, and it is the basis of our success this season. We need to keep that pairing going next season, too... :fishing:

Alan Bennett has been getting all the praise and deservedly so, but Mark Phillips has been excellent. Never puts a foot wrong and reads the game superbly well, both these 2 will easily cope in league one or probably even higher.;)

The match report from a certain Berkshire based correspondent at the Woking pre-season friendly has officially been upgraded from 'astute' to 'genius' (by himself)

"A good work-out but Woking were a very poor side. Opening 20 minutes were tight and competitive but from then on our midfield took command. We created and missed a number of good chances before half time, the second half was one way traffic for all but the last few minutes.

Several good performances, the two trialist centre backs both did well, Phillips is probably the one that we need more because of the experience that he brings but Wilson looks the better football player.

The most exciting thing that I have seen this pre-season is the genuine pace that we have up front and out wide. Here's hoping."

Mark Phillips

Phillips has been very impressive since coming into the side. I had concerns when Wilson went back but Phillips is extremely solid and just gets the job done with very few mis-judgements or errors.

He and Bennett make a great CB partnership and I hope we have them both next year in L1!

Mark Phillips

Phillips is quality, sign him up now, was he on a one year with an option for a second ?

..............maybe he will now....................

Mark Phillips

Phillips was rock solid when he came today. He's been one of our most reliable defenders as has done nothing wrong, now he's back for the final lap and this Saturday when we clinch promotion

Mark Phillips

Fantastic professional. Came on and won some massive headers as if he'd been on the pitch all game. Not a bad stand-in for the last 5 games :)

Mark Phillips

Sounded like he was very good when getting on yesterday, could quite easliy have been below par after getting dropped. At least he will now enjoy the last few games on the field now which is where he deserved to be:sorted:

Mark Phillips

Comment from him in today's Chron suggests he'll probably stay

Mark Phillips

Pleased about Phillips staying....impressed with his display v Darlo.....really up for it.....:sorted:

Mark Phillips

maybe an alternative question is: If Phillips and Bennett DO both sign will that be it or will we look to bring one more in?

Mark Phillips

Mark Phillips

Really good news! He will not be the most exciting signing this month, but could prove to be a very important one!

One more additional CB in I would suspect. Blackett might be the best option as he can also cover at LB if required.
