Always wanted Wally Backman as manager, probably just because he was such a no-nonsense player, but apparently he's not in the running.
Part of the Mets's problem is that Fred Wilpon and Son - hurt financially by Bernie Madoff scandal - won't f*** off and sell. So, next year's budget already expected to be down on this year's, a weak farm system, holes to fill at a lot of positions, plus a broken down rotation.

Buy Yankees, sell Mets.
Hurts me to say that.
If the Yankees could acquire a couple of genuine ace starting pitchers, they'd be set.

A meagre crumb of comfort in the final game for the Blue Jays, after a wretched season. Victory over the Yankees, coupled with Tampa's win over Baltimore, means that the only occasion all season when the Jays haven't been bottom of the AL East is the final table!

When you've had a season like the Jays have, any little bright spot is worth celebrating!

Anyway, we're done now, so here's to a Twins win in the AL Wild Card game tomorrow...

I think I mentioned earlier in this thread that it also means you get a nigher draft pick in the Winter.

American League Divisional series (Best of Five)

New York Yankees v Cleveland Indians (Indians lead series 1-0 after a 4-0 win last night)
Boston Red Sox v Houston Astros (Astros lead 1-0 after an 8-2 win last night)

National League Divisional Series (Best of Five)

Chicago Cubs v Washington Nationals
Arizona Diamondbacks v Los Angeles Dodgers

Both of the NL series starts tonight.

I said a couple of months back, I don’t believe the Yankees starting rotation compares with the top sides in MLB. They do have a killer bullpen, though.
I’m hoping for an Indians/Astros matchup in the AL Championship series.
In fact, I’m hoping the Tribe go all the way and Jay Bruce wins the series MVP.
Indians v Dodgers World Series?

Cureently there are managerial vacancies at the Mets, Tigers and Phillies, with a pretty good chance of the Red Sox joining the list.
The two hot names circulating are Alex Cora, bench coach of the Astros, and Joe McEwing, bench coach with the ChiSox.
The smart money would be on McEwing to the New York Mets. Unfortunately, the Mets organisation usually aren’t smart.

Just to add to the above, leaving the Red Sox to one side, arguably the most attractive of the three jobs is with the Phillies, as they have some good young talent coming through.
The Mets farm system is threadbare with major league ready talent and the Tigers have barely begun to rebuild.


Astros 8-1 up agin the Red Sox in game 2. Their 1-2 punch is Justin Verlander and Dallas Keuchel. That's a fine combination.

And in game 2 of the Yankees/Indians, Gary Sancez has hit a two run homer in the first inning, which is just what you need to do to put pressure on Corey Kluber.
Now the Indians get straight back into it, with two runs of their own, so it's all tied up again.

Yankees have got to Kluber, he's out the game and they have a 6-3 lead and we're still only in the third inning.
They do have a mightily impressive offense.
Also, suspect the Indians are pitching around Judge.

Two run HR from Greg Bird in the top of the fifth has increased The ****ees lead to 8-3.

They still blew it.
Joe Girardi is taking stick for his calls and for not challenging an out that wasn't given when a hitter foul-tipped into the catcher's mitt with two men on base, who subsequently scored.

Boston came back with three in the third and now lead 4-3, bottom of the sixth.

Cleveland lead The Yankees 2-1 game 4 in New York at midnight our time.
Houston lead The Red Sox 2-1 game 4 tonight at 6.00pm

In the National League Cubs and Nationals(Expos) are tied at 1-1 with game three tonight in Chicago at 9.00pm
Dodgers lead The Diamondbacks 2-0 with game thee in Arizona tomorrow at 3.00am.

If I had to pick one of those to attend or watch on TV, it’d be the Cubs/Nats. Wrigley Field, two evenly matched teams, one of them the holders. And the likes of Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman, Anthony Rizzo. Great matchup all around.

If they don't, Baker will surely be castigated for his decision to pull Scherzer, unless Scherzer was injured.

He has been struggling with a bad hamstring. Even so, he was so dominant he should of kept him on until at least the end of the inning.

Still. I don’t care. 2-1 up :)

On the face of it, you'd start the Cubbies favourites.

The Nationals haven't won a play-off series since being in Washington, and as the Expos, they last made the play-offs back in '81 when Andre Dawson and Gary Carter were playing for them.
As a Mets fan, I'm happy for that record to continue.

Stephen Strasburg gets the start over Tanner Roark, that evens it up a bit more.
Nats have taken a 1-0 in the 3rd on a fielding error, both sides have a single hit so far.
Proper tight pitchers battle, could come down to whose bullpen does a better job.

Back to the 50's with Yankees v Dodgers WS all over the place.

I've been reading a great book about the Brooklyn Dodgers The Bums The Borough and The Best of Baseball by Carl E, Prince.

There's a geat story on the back of a Yankees fan who was in a Brooklyn bar during the 1952 WS and was told "Why don't you go back where you belong, Yankee lover" "I got a right to cheer my team" he responded, "This is a free Country." "This ai't no free Country, chum" countered the Dodger fan, "This is Brooklyn."
