One Stuart Nelson

I expect to be in a minority here:

If I had to choose between Nelson and Abbey on the same money, bonuses, contract length etc, I would choose Nelson.

I do have concerns about his behaviour on the field but I don;t think we realise how good a goalkeeper we have here

One Stuart Nelson

 Stupot!!

Was funny watching New Road get arsey with Jack Lester on Saturday.

To me it was Nelson who was being the prat.

And as for popping the Forest fans' inflatable footballs :****ersmilie:

One Stuart Nelson

Nelson is alright sometimes

One Stuart Nelson

I couldn't vote for either of the extreme options offered here.

On equal money, I'd take Abbey ahead of Nelson, but in terms of goalkeeping ability I wouldn't mind if we ended up with Nelson next season if Abbey were unavailable (or p***ed off because of how we've treated him in the last month)

Some of Nelson's behaviour is irritating, but he has made few mistakes in the games he has played this season. With him or Abbey playing in some of the games Masters played, we might have saved a few points (but not enough to stay up) or at least kept the negative GD down a bit

One Stuart Nelson

Me too! won't have to go back to that dump and see those players which are a joke! lol And I also hope Nellie goes 2 a decent club where the club, manager and fans treat him like any other footballer and not like a piece of sh*t!

Yes, you must be gutted to see your husband treated in such an appalling manner.

By the way, could you ask him to stop wandering up the field as far as the centre circle (to do what exactly? Pass on the benefit of his great footballing wisdom to our defence?) so he can shout at people and stay back in his own area where it might be a good idea for him to open his trap and let his colleagues know what he wants them to do.

He has made some fantastic saves in his time but that's probably true of most goalkeepers. Except for Gary Sprake. And Joe Corrigan.

I remember Corrigan making a fantastic save once that was compared to Banks's save against Pele by the then MOTD presenters.

Really? I am surprised as he was such a big guy it was difficult for him to be agile a lot of the time. I was a Man City supporter when I first got interested in footie.

I do

He's a *****!!!!

But for his antics there would not have been 4 minutes added time against Oldham, therefore we would have won and got promoted. FACT!

Excuse me but isn't football a team game played with ELEVEN players....

One Stuart Nelson

funny how some players are allowed to wind up away fans and are held in high esteem by our fans for it. whilst others are called pricks etc etc for similar behaviour  depends on the agenda i guess. personally i'd be happy to have nelson in goal next season, abbey and masters as back up, if we can afford 3 gks that is. good gesture to give his shirt away on saturday as well i thought :sorted:

Depends if you have to walk past the opposition supporters on the way out too I guess

One Stuart Nelson

Nelson is an absolute pr1ck...FACT. How many times have we seen him act like an immature child to opposing fans, players and towards the officials ? Answer: Many. I finally lost the plot with him after Millwall away earlier in the season when after a mediocre performance and a 1 - 1 draw he ran the length of the field to throw his gloves in the upper tier of the away end.....yep like it's the Champions League Final or something. As I posted at the time, I hope the club weren't paying for those gloves, 46 games x £50 gloves = £2300.
He's also a Rovers fan and when he walks down Braemar Road with that ridiculous duffle coat he looks like a teenage French exchange student wearing his rucksack euro double strapped stylie. Pr1ck. FACT. The only good thing about him being his mrs, how the hell he ever got hold of her I'll never know.

One Stuart Nelson

Nelson is an absolute pr1ck...FACT. :imwith:

all the mistakes he has made over the last couple of season have cost us promotion. he must have cost us 10-12 points each season. because of this all that has gone on this season has also been his fault :) the sooner we get rid the better. nelson **** off

One Stuart Nelson

Can't we just settle this with a Banana vs Nelson scuff on the street?

I agree with you partly, I think he is a better keeper than he's given credit for, he's one of the few who cares about the club. I find it laughable that people complain about his behaviour, squirting water on the penalty spot etc. If he'd saved the penalty no-one would have mentioned it.

However I think Abbey is a better keeper (and probably the best player in our squad apart from maybe Kuffour) for his consistency and kicking.

One Stuart Nelson

I think the options of this poll are to extreme. Whilst not being a big fan of Nelson, he can hardly take the can for this awful season.

I feel he is a good shot stopper, but he does scare me sh.....s when he comes for crosse etc. All in all an average lower league goalkeeper.

One Stuart Nelson

Nelson is basically the economy version of Lehmann and I can't stand Lehmann.

Apart from his behaviour the thing that really annoys me is just how many goals Nelson has given away. Why do we tolerate him when Abbey comes in and shows us what a professional keeper should be like. The second goal Forest scored was a joke, it wasn't even hit very hard.

Nelson doesnt get riled by the opposition.

Not comparable with Lehman, in terms of ability or temprement.

He probably gets off on winding up opposition fans, as it gives him a hard on...

Right, I think there are two different questions here.

Is Nelson good enough to play for a League Two club next season? I think yes. Despite all of the criticism on here, you've got to remember he has improved a lot over the past few seasons. Hes always been a good shot-stopper but has lacked consistency and he cant kick for sh!t. These are skills that should be learnt on the training ground, so I think the finger of blame should be pointed at Stannard and the coaching team. Nelson is still a relatively young keeper and I think a solid season next season would help him develop into a much better keeper.

The second question is who is better, Nelson or Abbey? For me it has to be Abbey. As someone said earlier in the thread when Abbey came in it was amazing to see the difference an experienced pro makes. In that first game against Chesterfield he was shouting at the defence, claiming crosses from corners, commanding the area, even pulled off a couple of good saves if memory serves.

I think in an ideal world we would want to keep them both on. I think Nelson has struggled in his development over the last few seasons as he was thrown in as the no.1 a bit too early. However we all know that we cant afford this option.

Realistically we need to keep hold of Abbey as an experienced pro and let Masters learn from him. We've seen flashes of ability from Masters but he lacks the finer points such as how to set up for free kicks from the edge of the box.

In summary, Nelson OUT.

This about sums it up for me. Also Nelson inspires no confidence what so ever in the defence. They never know if he's going to do a flying punch on the edge of his box, stay on the line, punch, shout, catch.

His errors may have even cost us 20 goals now.

Abbey for me everytime. Got nothing to do with the antics and I don't have the vitriol for Nelson that others do. Just that Abbey's professional keeping gives me much more confidence. We also got the bonus of some spectacular last ditch saves this year. If we are keeping Nelson I would sign Abbey as well to give him some real competition for the place.

One Stuart Nelson

Stannard OUT the fat fulham ****

One Stuart Nelson

I think that the two answers are too extreme.

I think Nelson is okay as a keeper and compares with most in this division.

However, I think that Abbey's experience does give the defence more confidence in his ability.

I would prefer Abbey as our Number 1 for next season but fear that his wages will dictate that we cannot afford him.

Therefore, I assume it will be Nelson and I have no problems with that.

Stannard OUT the fat fulham ****
Who cares whether he's fulham or not? Football isn't about loyalties these days it's about who can do a job. Frankly I'd have Martin R*wlands back next season if he wanted to play for the club, the fact he's a complete ****** doesn't matter, the fact he's actually a decent player does.

:imwith:

Nellies poor kicking and unforced errors put him below Abbey. He is a good shot stopper but I think Abbey may just edge that too.
When Abbey plays I feel if we concede a goal it'll probably be due to poor outfield play or an unstoppable effort.
When Nelson plays I feel we may also concede due to him dropping a big old clanger.

Also ... a couple of seasons ago .. didnt Nelson wind up Luton fans down the Ealing Rd end .. and it was classed as a champagne moment by loads of people

... but those were the days when we used to win at home

One Stuart Nelson

I have never been so insulted in all my life!!

My poll have NEVER had loaded options!! :fishing:

One Stuart Nelson

There's some proper hatred on this thread. lol

The only place Nelson is liked is by the morons who stand on the right side of Brook Road..... and that is only because Nelson is a Burberry share holder:cool:

Even if you don't care if he is Fulham, he cannot do the job very well either

Agree with this.

Wouldnt be heartbroken if Nelson was replaced by Abbey - probably be a better role model for Brown and Masters (if they stay) than Nelson as well.

I never knew Nelson was so despised!

One Stuart Nelson

not really bothered about him as a person but have thought for a long time that he was a weak link.

One Stuart Nelson

If you whatch the dvd of Martin Allens first full season Stuart Nelson cost us a number of points defeat to Port Vale away and Gillingham at home both classic examples. his shot stopping is good but his positional sense is'nt up to scratch and he makes to many mistakes, his kicking is truly awful.

One Stuart Nelson

Stuart Nelson didn't put a single kick wrong on Saturday.. which is more than can be said about Paul Smith's kicking :thetruth:

one swallow does'nt make a summer, granted he had a good game against forest apart from the 4 goals which I don't think you can blame him for.
In my oppinion the consistency is'nt there for me

One Stuart Nelson

Some right moaning minnies on here. Stuarts a bit of a character but i fail to see why that gets up so many people's noses. I find the guy and his antics entertaining while many seem to be blinded by some a red mist of hate for the bloke. Some blokes moaning about him throwing his gloves into the crowd on page 3. Get a life jesus Christ. Hes one of the few players we have who acknowledges the fans and plays as if he cares. Hes a crap kicker, and liable to the odd mistake but the guys certainly not a bad goalie and an accomplished shop stopper. Some of the posts on here make him out to be Ademola Bankole.

One Stuart Nelson

I do

He's a *****!!!!

But for his antics there would not have been 4 minutes added time against Oldham, therefore we would have won and got promoted. FACT!

Wrong - FACT!

The laws are 30 secs for each goal scored and 30 secs for each substitution plus whatever injury time the Ref thinks.

So 2nd Half against Oldham.

3 goals (making score 2-1) would be 1 min 30 secs.

5 subs came on - further 2 mins 30 secs = 4 mins minimum... and I believe many people covered this when everyone harangued the ref for the amount of time in the Oldham match report thread, we got lumbered with a ref who apllied the letter of the law on the timekeeping.

Nelsons antics had nothing to do with it.

One Stuart Nelson

I wonder if there is a connection between these two items

Doubt it given the rationale highlighted in my first post where I explained where the minimum of 4 minutes came from without the ref having to consider any timewasting in his considertaions .. Of course only the ref fully knows what considerations he made on the day to come to the 4 mins. However to provide a fair and reasoned balance to that point you chose to make I have highlighted the logical sources for his added time.

One Stuart Nelson

Problem with CheekyBees logic is that the Refs don't bother with that stupid rule. Or can he explain why in one of the halves in the Roma Vs Man Utd game there were 0 injury time minutes displayed?

One Stuart Nelson

I would keep Nelson, i think he is a great keeper who has saved us far far more times than he has "let us down".

If you want to get rid of a keeper ship out Masters, now he HAS cost us points ; through bad positioning, bad kicking, poor decision making and instilling absolutely no confidence in the players in front of him.

Brentford supporters memories are very short. When masters was leaking all those goals fans couldn't wait for Nelson to be back in goal. And that was when Masters was being hailed as the next best thing since sliced bread - thats almost as funny as Nelsons antics on the pitch, but slightly more worrying!!!

Different ref I should think, and maybe he felt sorry for the pounding Roma were getting??

- I never intimated all refs are consistent. However looking at that one instance, the 4 mins at Oldham you can easily identify where the ref got 4 mins from without having to add anything for any shenanigans our players may have got up to.

Cheers

One Stuart Nelson

The blokes the biggest liability going and has cost us plenty of goals over the seasons, hes got awful judgement and needs to remember hes a goalie and not a midfielder so stay in the fekin goal!

One Stuart Nelson

While i think abbey is the better keeper(theres no substitute for experience) i believe that nelson has won us more points in his time with us than he's lost.

I also agree that football is about eleven players and that our recent failures (and success's for that matter) have never been down to one player.

The gpg is always having 'witchunts' and this thread has turned into another one(no offence nocoat).

Players in the last few seasons that have gone onto much bigger and better things have made all sorts of clownlike errors while playing for us.

If anything nelson is less at fault for our demise this season than any other player and who knows how an injury free season for us for him would have affected our demise.

How many times have we blown promotion in the last 14 seasons(i think we all know the answer to that one) so blaming nelson for a ref adding a couple of extra minutes is the most stupid thing ive ever heard.

A keeper generally is only as good as his defence in front of him unless he's superman i guess.FFS hes only human like the rest of us.

One Stuart Nelson

Nelson was inconsistent last season when I am led to believe he was critical about the quality of coaching he received. This season, when fit he has been....inconsistent.

In goalkeeping terms he is still fairly inexperienced but I still feel he makes too many bad decisions and the best keepers make the fewest.

He is probably not as good as he thinks he is and whilst he could come back to haunt us I hope he leaves.

Remember as he is out of contract and over 24 he can make his own mind up about where he plays next season and perhaps Brentford is not his first choice.

A new manager might well have his own ideas about keepers and maybe neither Nelson nor Abbey will feature.

Abbey has totally overperformed and shown a level of consistency that I for one never thought he possessed.

One Stuart Nelson

For the record, I think Nelson is one of the better keepers in this division and a character but..... There's a time and a place and when the team is losing regularly and your own form is inconsistent the showing off and wind ups fall flat on supporters, both sets by the way.

Fair to say I think that Nathan Abbey had virtually no fans when he joined the club, and general consensus on here was "Is that the best we can get, some Torquay reject"
But he came in, concentrated and did his job efficiently, professionally and at times outstandingly. There was no showboating and hysterics as he just did his job and exceeded our expectations even though most of us were fearing the worst.

Nelson would have done well when he got his recall to have followed suit, but no, he had to be involved in the thick of things, starting with Oldham and then again vs Forest. As I said earlier he wouldn't have been vilified if we were winning but FFS we weren't so hence why so many have finally had enough of him.

Good keeper and if Nathan isn't retained wouldn't be unhappy to see him start in front of Masters but someone needs to tell him to think first before taking centre stage.
