Orient Match Report

Very disappointing again I'm afraid and not what I was expecting. We were in control before the penalty without ever looking like scoring and our only really clear cut chance was the ball that dropped to TC after the corner.
I worry now that teams really have sussed us and know that while Uwe likes us to play neat, passing football through the middle, we have no width or imagination once we get in the final third. The result is that teams let us play, stroll around confidently with the ball playing neat triangles and reverse passes with the odd injection of pace from Adam but realising that it won't actually hurt them, they defend in numbers and allow us space and time knowing that regardless of how long we keep the ball it will end up in a goal kick to them or an easy gather for the goalkeeper over 95% of the time.

I can't work out how a Manager who was a World class striker cannot get some synergy from playing prolific goalscorers together as a pair. BWP and Clayton didn't really fire, Farid and Clayton nada so far, Grigg and Clayton worked against Sheff Utd and that's about it - ridiculous that talented, highly rated players that most other league 1 clubs would bite our hands off to have if they became available are playing so badly as a collective. I do like Uwe, he's an honest, straight talking chap who when reflecting after a game sees it very similar to the way I have but I'm stumped as to why that insight can't be communicated and acted upon on the training ground to effect positive change.

Orient were decent, workmanlike with two defenders who were prepared to die for the cause and three mobile forwards who linked up well with each other but let's not get carried away they were there for the taking and we didn't have the gumption or guile to get the better of them.

Was going to Coventry but if honest I'll mull it over before committing now. Like most on here I've got other far more pressing priorities and not sure I should be changing family weekend plans for my own selfish needs when it ends up ruining the weekend for everyone! I guess the expectations are higher and I'd settled for watching a pretty sh*tty standard of football most seasons for the last 44-45 years with the odd diamond being uncovered in the turd. I think what is so frustrating is that for the first time in my memory in this division we have arguably the most talented collection of players and we should have kicked on from last season and yet we're going backwards in terms of performance and results. The worry is that we'll lose our best players in January if we're not in contention and that will mean it's another season and opportunity to get out of this poxy league wasted and Matthews patience being tested.

I need to see improvement and quickly as I'm careering towards the D&G crew that I never envisaged with this set up and squad.

Can't believe how average the 'table toppers' were.
And how inadequate we looked in the second half - especially once the penalty was scored..
not a happy night to be a Bees fan.
Hoping for a radical shake up at the weekend (and so annoyed that I messed up the link to the 'Last Word' - now corrected)

Very good point about that awful guaglione music.

We should have shuffled out to Mediocre Bad Boys by Jack Johnson instead....

Orient Match Report

Some obvious downs to me:
1) We didn't really look like we thought we could score
2) Clayton is being used in the same way as AS used Robby Simpson - get him against a smaller fullback and then a long ball out to his head.
3) Pitty-patty football needs players making sudden unexpected bursts rather than passing it around in front of the defence
4) If you play a winger and then bring on a winger, you need to have someone like Farid in the middle; Clayton's not bad in the air but doesn't have the anticipation of Farid and
5) Trotta, although he got a couple of shots off really needs to look interested outside the box
6) Grigg at the moment reminds me of Scotty Partridge in the season after we went up, or Charle Mac in his last full season with us - lots of running but no true end-result
7 McCormack looked good in the first half, but overall the midfield were having lots of problems getting second ball - and after he went off we never got it at all.

I agree with every part of your analysis. One 'up' last night was that we tried to play with some width (on one side at least) and, while Fillo didn't have a great game, I really do hope that Uwe will persevere with this.

Orient Match Report

The first half was encouraging with the ball played through the midfield tho final passes we're not good enough.
Second half the defence was off message - poor defending and long balls mostly to defenders rather than in the channels. Difficult problem for Uwe of how to sort out the defence. Or add quality to it.

Orient Match Report

I posted it last night and I'll repeat myself but we went toe-to-toe with Orient until they changed from thumping balls into our centre halves to placing them into the channels between our defenders. They played with the confidence of a long winning run and we played about a lot. Once they got the penalty, they improved immensely and our heads dropped. The team and formation is one the majority of loud voices on here wanted but the substitutions - particularly Teixeira and Dallas were completely wrong, in hindsight. There was no moment in the game where you thought that we really were going to score; their 'keeper did not make any real saves, only picking up what were almost back passes. That's the problem.

Orient Match Report

We had plenty of chances at goal, same old story we weren't clinical enough, most of our chances were straight at the keeper, wasn't our night.
Dean headed wide early on from a Forshaw free kick.
Forshaw had a couple of efforts at goal one straight at the keeper.
Donaldson turned and shot and straight at the keeper.
Cross by Craig met by Fillo again headed straight at the keeper.

Donaldson was crap - not helped by the ball being 'hoofed' to him when he is incapable of lifting himself more than a few inches off the ground - but nonetheless crap, he surely must have an 'I can't be substituted' clause ion his contract!
Mooney had a good chance to put orient ahead but he headed over.

Second half we started well, 5 minutes in good play, Donaldson turned and 20yards out his one just over the bar. Then Donaldson had an effort at goal deflected for a corner after good work tracking back and winning the ball.
From the resulting corner ball crossed into the box and fell to Craig at the back post who had a shot blocked and go for a corner. From that corner Donaldson header straight at the keeper.

Logan had his arms all Mooney even before he went down, silly penalty to give away, he may have had some of Logans shirt too but it's asking for trouble especially in the box. Lee dived the right way but was a very well placed penalty. Shortly after their 11 had an effort on goal which was going in, Lee made a terrific fingertip save to put it behind for a corner.

We struggled to then create anything, game fizzled out apart from Toumani sideways shot. Lots of running with the ball and passes but we either couldn't break through or lost the ball.

Substitutes struggled and couldn't make an impact on the game. Surprised not to see Farid come on.

Second goal 5minutes from time was the killer, couldn't see a way back.

Forshaw MOTM and rightly so, was everywhere, quality again.
Donaldson had a really good game.
Toumani and Filo both drifted in and out of the game and failed to make much of an impact.
Too many long balls especially to Grigg up in the air, that's simply not his game, much better with the ball into feet, same with Donaldson. If we are to play it in the air then Farid is the man you want/need upfront.

Donaldson had a 'good game'? He was awful, admittedly not helped by the 'hoofball' tactics when he is incapable of lifting his body more than a few inches off the ground but nonetheless awful - he must surely have an ' I cannot be substituted' clause inserted in his contract!

Still a lack of proper leaders in the side when the going gets tough.

I hear Craig is a man you'd want in the trenches with you because of a couple of lines some bloke has written in some book that I haven't read. Where was he when the going got tough last night?

McCormack signed so we wouldn't get bullied. He's not the player I saw at Swindon.

Dean is going the way of Forrester post Chelsea and believing his own hype rather than dominating centre forwards.

Too many players and too many formations.

Most of the players have no heart and don't look bothered. Could be trouble ahead.

Orient Match Report

Really not sure at all about Grigg, is it just me, he doesn't work hard enough for me (IMO), whereas Clayton in the main does put in the work rate. Fillo had a poor game, Forhsaw by far our best player, and Dave worked hard in Midfield as well,, also not sure why McCormack was taken off. The Penalty really came against the run of play and seemed to knock the stuffing out of us, and we didn't seem fired up to come back at them like we have in the past and then the 2nd went at that was it. Logan I thought did OK, but was a stupid penalty to give away and he was out of position on that one occasion. Lee was unlucky with the Penalty but Mooney did put away well. We still have one of the best squads in the league, but we really need to settle with a starting 11, as the chopping and changing isn;t helping. We shouldn't fear anyone in the league, but think we need to get back to basics and we have to start taking our chances. A lot of effort last night, but final balls were poor and we are not finishing the chances we are getting, and too consistantly not taking them. Orient are an average side, but they are a settled side and they are taking their chances, we're not.

Orient Match Report

Not sure how many goals Grigg scored last season......bet he was not playing wide left though.....ah well...just as well it's a marathon and not a sprint........YOU REDS...

Orient Match Report

So to clarify you are saying that Richard Lee was in some way culpable for either of the goals he conceded tonight. A well taken penalty and a one on one which was from my vantage point an excellent finish. In which alternative universe could he in anyway be held responsible for either one of those goals:confused:

..................he was no better than the rest of the defence IMO, and I refer you to the fact that he was the much-hyped penalty saver extraordinaire just a couple of seasons ago - I seem to recall that the second goal went underneath his right hand, and as for the penalty, maybe a properly 'matchfit' Richard Lee might have saved it, good penalty though it was - I certainly wouldn't have swapped Richard for Jack Bonham, and I've not seen anything of Liam O'Brien to have formed an opinion - but he is the last line of the defence, which in my mind had a collective off-night, not helped by a midfield where Toumani players were also off-colour, including, although various others on here have cited him as being our best player (which maybe he was, considering the dross around him) Adam Forshaw, who clearly seems to think he is the Stevie Gerrard of our team, and that if it doesn't go through him, it can't be good, not to mention a forward line that looked as if it didn't have a clue who had what responsibility, nor looked as if a goal would come from any of them................

............there you go, the touch-paper has been lit, the unspeakable has been mentioned, and the tin hat is most definitely on..........

You don't need a tin hat I just disagree with you. I don't see how Lee was culpable for either goal last night. So Lee has a decent record of saving penalties doesn't mean he should be expected to stop everyone - and he made a decent effort last night- it was a good penalty. Second goal was a good finish, hit early and low- a nightmare for any keeper. The defence wasn't great as a unit last night - if you include Lee in that is up to you. I personally thought he looked solid, made a good save and a decent catch, kicking wasn't great and didn't have a chance with either goal.

Orient Match Report

The cracks are beginning to appear and only will be repaired when we have a team that battles to win games.Uwe has a lot of work to do to make Brentford a solid unit home and away.

:imwith:

By the way, in the first half their winger created havoc down our right: once th edanger had been cleared, Shaleum started having a real go at (it seemed) Lee, pointing at the edge of the box or the goal line. Any ideas what that was about? It didn't seem to make sense based on what had just happened.

Orient Match Report

It seems it doesn't matter which formation or changing the starting line up it's just not working! To many poor performances this season can't be a coincidence can it. Lack of belief and as soon as that penalty went in last night I never felt we would get back in it. The subs were ineffective because most of them have had very little playing time. It's ok having a large squad but a settled team is better in my opinion.

..................well I'm glad (honestly) you think I don't need a tin hat (but I was referring to that in respect of my comments about Adam Forshaw more than anything else), and I agree with you that Lee made a fine save late in the game, and probably made a good catch also, but isn't that a bit like saying Logan made a good run and a good pass (although he was caught out for the penalty), Donaldson hit a fine shot on the turn just over the bar (although he also hit a very poor shot from the edge of the area as he was being pulled down (for which, if he had been Mooney, would have earned him a penalty)), and Trotta (I think it was) had a goalbound shot blocked by Donaldson -probably everyone who represented our club last night did at least one thing 'right' but that doesn't mean that any of them played well or had a good game - in that context, I also believe that Richard did not have a good game either (but I would still rather have had him in goal than the other available options, matchfit or not)...............

Slade fielded an unchanged line up for the 7th game in a row and it showed. Orient in truth were fairly average with a couple of stand out players, but they played it like a cup final, they appeared to have

a understanding and togetherness that we seem to be lacking at the moment. We signed a lot of new players in the summer (12+) and we appear to have lost some of that close knit, never say die

attitude that was so evident last season. Our squad is now one of the largest in the division and Uwe needs to decide whether to continue with his chop & change rotation policy to appease fringe players

or work out his best starting eleven and stick with it!!

Nice being able to stick with the same team especially if they keep on winning, but I thought that is why we have a bigger squad so that we would be resilient to injuries, have players come in who are as good as the ones they replace. We have a different business model to Orient, its just not working.

The reason we're not scoring many goals is that the midfielders play too deep and don't get forward quickly enough. (Yes, Forshaw, Fillo and Disgorger, I'm looking at you). What a contrast to Orient, who defended in numbers and attacked in numbers!

We need MacCormack to play deep to cover the defence and allow Logan to go forward; it's a role for which he is especially well equipped. But the other three have to be more athletic. When was the last time, in open play, a midfielder made a run ahead of the strikers? The failure to support the front men leaves them out-numbered and ineffective. It also makes our attacks slow and laboured, giving the defenders plenty of time to get behind the ball. In the end, we often end up hoofing it up to Grigg simply because there are so few options left.

Is it a lack of fitness and athleticism? Or is it Rosler's game plan? In each home game I've sat directly behind Rosler and watched him continually screaming at his players to get forward, so it might be the former perhaps?

Orient Match Report

The balance of the defence is completely wrong, Craig is never a left back and should be moved straight back into the centre with Dean. Taylor was so slow and immobile it was frightening everytime they got the ball on the deck or played the ball in behind him we were in big trouble.

I cant understand what we were doing when Orient had a goal kick or free kick in their own half and were launching it into our box, Dean was standing almost up at the half way line nowhere near the Orient forwards and then at the last minute attempting to back pedal and head it out at the same time. He was misjudging it everytime and it caused the first goal. They had already had loads of let offs from this and kept doing it.

Who do we play left back then ? No Bidwell or Barron.

Orient Match Report

We looked nervous at the back for the majority of the game, lacked any real width and why we played with 2 defensive midfielders at home is beyond me, everytime Dave had green space in front of him in the middle of the park he passed it sideways, slowing down the move and our momentum. I like Dave but he needs to be played in the right way in the right games.

Clayton always occupies a defender but had 2 poor touches and couldnt get his feet right when put through on goal by a delicious through ball by Forshaw deep into injury time.

Fillo didnt get into the game, Grigg looked good with ball at feet but we didnt do that enough, Dean was inconcistent throughout.

Craig did a good job at LB, Forshaw was good and we had a good 15 minute spell in the second half with a speight of corners.

I was too far away to see the penalty, it completely changed the game though.

Though Uwe's subs were poor (easy to say on reflection), but a midweek night game at home when we are launching balls into the box seemed the occassion for Farid.

I also would have put Reeves on for Dave.

A poor night overall.

Orient Match Report

Teams are mid-table for a reason. No fluency or cohesion in the team selection usually puts pay to that. Uwe is yet to find out his best starting XI but will need to do so... and quickly.

Wisbe better check the attic to see if you have a spare tin hat up there as I think you may well need one

Firstly Lee: distribution not clever and not improved on previous outings, in first half hesitated at a long throw and Taylor cleared off the line, not at fault with either goal and had a solid game with one excellent save in the 2nd half. Not sure what you are expecting from him but he did fine

Forshaw: the only footballer on the pitch last night who was head and shoulders above any other player on either side. Cool on the ball and trying to make things happen, you compared him to Gerrard well he is certainly trying to fulfill that role

Criticism us justified for last nights performance but in my opinion you have chosen to criticise probably the only 2 players who are exempt from it !!!!

Defence poor forwards poor tactics poor that is where it all went tits up !!!!

Orient Match Report

The players on the park were the reason we lost last night, and it aint Roslers fault. Logan never had to do that , penalty or not. That cost us the game. Along with an Orient side that man for man competed much better than a Bees side that looked very individual. This side seem to think they have a god ridden right to go up. Uwe it is time to round this team up and tell them WE ARE NOT BERTY BIG BOLLOX
Time for the players to respond and start playing for the shirt.

Agree 100% although I would say if the players stepped up and played better themseoves the tactics mightn't have been found wanting. Exempt from that, as you rightly point out Mr Pipe, is Forshaw who is indeed a stand out player and the side should be/should have been built around him.

Spot on. Forshaw had (went and got) plenty of possesion but no one showed (apart from Logan) to give him a pass they could run onto.

Orient Match Report

Well I dont understand why we didnt bring in a left back on loan instead of Taylor, that was the area that needed cover. We have now disrupted the centre back pairing as well and look the worst we have looked in a long time.

Orient Match Report

Who do I blame for last night? Tempted to argue it was the cameras fault or our fault for not getting behind the players as we use to! Or my lucky underpants are no longer lucky.

If these reasons are rejected we are left with what ?

Rosler - inexperienced manager now being found out.

The players - pick any player or players you like for not trying, not being strong enough, not skilful enough.

The referee - gave numerous decisions to Orient, including the penalty and ignore one or two penalties for us.

The fates- you can reduce the influence of the fates but you cannot completely master them. A header flashes past the post.

So what can the clubs do? Get another manager in. Don't wait as with every game the championship is receding.

Wait making the best out of what we have.

Get more players in.

Change tactics.

Change the starting eleven.

Oh well in Northampton on Sunday. Should be a fun afternoon.

Orient Match Report

I heard the excellent commentary on BBC Radio London so didn't actually see the game. However it seems that we could have taken a lead into half time but fell apart when we went behind. To be honest I have lost patience with our style of play and the obsessive tactical game employed by Rosler.
I have supported this club for over 50 years and I really believed that, finally, this was going to be our season. On the evidence so far I just can't see it happening. I feel frustrated and very disappointed. Orient, despite the vitriol and rivalry between us played it perfectly. They took their chances when they were presented and quite simply we did not. And that's been the case for a while now. I don't know what the answer is, but I don't think it's going to be much fun this season.

I think Dean and Logan have both played very well this season so far. Harlee is capable of the odd clanger but he's still only in his second full season and is big, strong, commanding, never hides and looks a class player at this level. Logan has improved on last season and developed into a very consistent 7.5 or 8/10 type of player week in week out. Last night I thought both Harlee and Shay did OK against very decent forwards but both were at fault for the penalty being conceded.
I still don't think the defence is the big problem, look at the goals for and then look at the players we have available, something is very wrong for me.

Orient Match Report

I thought they shaded the first half but had much the better chances and cd have scored three.

second half we were dominant without really looking like scoring then we gave away a harsh looking pen and then our fragility took over and we looked dead and buried.

not sure what's going on at the club, everything seems right except where it matters most.maybe I'll wake up soon and it's all been a dream where we are exactly where we've always been or the massive turnover of staff will kill off the club and all the mb disciples will go into hiding

Wasn't getting at Dean, like him a lot despite his odd error, just defending Logan. While I agree we should be scoring more the defense is a very big problem, looked very nervy at the back at times last night and just seems very easy for the opposition to score against us at times while we have all the possession/pressure. I will be amazed if we keep a clean sheet Sunday. To get promotion you need to be able to grind out 1-0 wins when not playing great, just can't see us doing that to many times.

Sadly agree and my worry is that based on lack of goals we will not out-score many sides, Tranmere result aside.

If my deeply analytical and unbiased memory serves me well, last night our defenders had more clear goal-scoring opportunities than our forwards... and our forward defended a clear goal-scoring opportunity of our own, as well.

I'd agree with that (the Donaldson clearance summed the night up quite well). It shouldn't be forgotten either, that one of the Bees' better efforts came the Orient defender who managed to back-heel the ball across his own goalmouth and just past the post.

Orient Match Report

Lee- Wasn't his fault for the goals and almost saved the penalty.
Logan- What was he doing tugging him down like that?! But also why would rosler put him up against Mooney a player much bigger than him, so he didnt really have much chance in winning any headers. Poor game from him.
Dean- Was okay but the penalty was partially his fault and those diagonal balls he plays dont work most of the time. Still one of my favourite players though.
Taylor- Our best defender last night. Looks a good signing. We need to extend his loan.
Craig- Didn't do much. Should of scored, but some how missed from 2 yards.
McCormack- We need him to play the whole game. Our most important player in my opinion. Looked fine in the first half.
Diagouraga- One of our only players that done themselves proud. Should start on Sunday.
Forshaw- WHY IS HE STILL IN LEAGUE ONE?! Far too good for this league! Our Best player by far! We'll be lucky not to lose him in January in my opinion!
Fillo- Again like Craig, didn't really notice him, that being said the service he got was rubbish
Grigg- Can't win a header and lacks pace, however there must be more to his game if he scored 20 goals last season! Still waiting for him to impress and prove to me that he's a good signing
Donaldson- Really dont know why he's getting so much stick. Was our 2nd best player, behind Forshaw. Looked like the only player that would score and worked his socks off.

SUBS:
Dallas- Looked like he can beat a man and has pace. Should always be on our bench atleast. Good impact sub.
Trotta- looked lazy and didn't look bothered at all. Still cant win a header.
Teixeira- Not going to judge him on that cameo as Rosler said he was not used right.

FARID MUST START SATURDAY!

Orient Match Report

We rarely looked like scoring, despite good play at times, and Orient looked dangerous. Fillo and Grigg were disappointing and Logan badly at fault with the pen (but still our best player so far this season). I thought subs seemed good decisions, but none of them came off

Orient Match Report

Leyton Orient won possibly because they were the better team on the day ?
