Birmingham-born Henry came through the ranks at Walsall, going on to make his professional debut in December 2014. He was named Walsall’s Young Player of the Year the following May before truly announcing himself during the 2015-16 campaign. He made 44 appearances, scored three goals, signed a new three-year contract and won England youth recognition as The Saddlers reached the League One Play-Offs. He picked up the September Football League Young Player of the Month award, in addition to being named in the League One PFA Team of the Year and receiving a nomination for the Football League Young Player of the Year award.

In August 2016, Henry joined former Walsall boss Dean Smith at Griffin Park but had to wait until the following February to make his debut due to a shoulder injury. He made 12 appearances to the end of that campaign and a further eight at the start of the following season before a serious knee injury sidelined him for 14 months. Rico returned in November 2018 and scored his first Brentford goal during the 3-1 home win against Stoke City in January. So far this term, Rico has played every minute in the Sky Bet Championship as he closes in on 100 professional appearances.

Rico has been very unlucky with injuries over the last couple of years, but he has been flying so far this season. I feel that Rico can be the best full-back or wing-back in the league and I look forward to seeing what he has to come.”

Rico Henry has become the second Brentford player in as many weeks to sign a new long-term contract. The 22-year-old follows Ollie Watkins in putting pen to paper on a new four-year deal, taking him through to the summer of 2023.

Brentford FC Head Coach Thomas Frank said: “I am absolutely delighted to see another of our exciting young players extend their stay with us. Rico has been very unlucky with injuries over the last couple of years, but he has been flying so far this season. I feel that Rico can be the best full-back or wing-back in the league and I look forward to seeing what he has to come.”

I doubt we would have any policy that was so stringent on anything. We are probably offering top players better contracts all the time but they are being tapped up with huge pay rises elsewhere, maybe with the money we have made we can finally offer deals that are more competitive.

Great news - gives us a better bargaining position when bigger clubs come sniffing around. If he gets a full season under his belt I have no doubt there will be PL suitors come May and this maximizes the clubs valuation of him.

I think/hope the days of losing our better players to Championship rivals is over. The club definitely appears to be in a stronger financial position than ever since our time in The Championship. No complaints with players moving on to PL clubs ala Neal and Ezri but will be nice not to lose players to the likes of Brum etc in future.

Maybe pay rise because we are now in a position to pay better wages due to our excellent transfer dealings the last couple of years, plus the additional revenue from Lionel Road which can now be factored in to future revenue forecasts over the next 3 to 4 years. Of course, it will also strengthen our hand if PL clubs come calling in the future.

I would assume this is the case. We signed him on a decent League 1 salary deal, a 'big club' has waved a larger amount at him, so a new contract makes him happy and settled again. We did the same with Woods.

Seems a real determination in the club, from the top no doubt, to really put us on the next level in terms of players, transfer fees, wages, professionalism, championship status.

May not pay immediate dividends, but continues our on-going upward trend.

How lucky we are, looking around at clubs like Bury and Bolton

Glad I am around to watch it, experience it, enjoy it.

Great news - can and will be a top left back if he stays clear of injuries. He needs 35+ games this season.
Definitely think more contracts are going to follow.

Good news. He wasn't on great money, so if he can stay fit we've done well to tie him down for another couple of years.

He needs to work on crossing. When he gets to the byline and hammers the ball across, that’s OK, but trying to pick out a player from a bit deeper he just floats the ball to the defenders.

....what an asset he'll be when he has a striker to aim at...he gets to the bye line consistently...great little wing back.

At least two crosses he put in, should have been converted.

Really good today. Admittedly not his most challenging of afternoons, but I felt he played with much more engagement and intelligence than previously this season. Far better at making himself available on the touchline, and made some fabulous runs, one of which should have earned him a goal if he'd had the right boots on. Solid defensively too. Real step forward today. Only slight issue was being able to distinguish him from Valencia, at a distance, late on. lol

Very disappointing today. Poor defending leading up to the first goal and poor final ball going forward.

Many said to just wait until he gets a injury free run behind him, well now he has and he's failing to make any progress at all. Doesn't look a better player than when he joined the club.

I thought he had a tough afternoon. It was as if Preston targeted him and down that side. Everything was coming at us down the left flank. Maybe his stature ? Thought he could’ve cleared the 1st goal better ? Need to see a replay of it and was left wide open for 2nd. Not sure JJ was !

Worst game I’ve seen him play today... both defensively and going forward.

He had a tough afternoon defensively from there goal kicks but won a lot in the air and done well and you could see he was working hard for his team, he had no help wots so every from Benrahma who I thought was the worst player on the pitch and his body language was terrible all game, he couldn't even be bothered too pick up the goal scorer for there second goal, knowing Rico had the inside man, my colleagues and I could see it even before the goal went in, but hay! he is our golden boy so nuff said about that. After the game I spoke too a group of Preston fans and they thought Rico was one of our best players for us, which I tend to agree, he was the only one trying too do things going forward when he could and put in a cross 2nd half which at least should of been met. I thought offensively we were terrible and definitely lost the game in the midfield, they won most second balls which was also frustrating. I thought the subs were strange bringing on Kamo for a striker when we are one nil down, I thought we should of taken Benrahma and Norgaard off and replaced them with Valencia and Kamo we always look better with Kamo in the team and should be starting every game.

Its strange how other people see games, I think some fans get so frustrated and angry when the game is not going there way, they forget to look at the overall game and causes on why we are losing.
I too agree with you, that Rico was one of our best players.

Most of us watch games and form an opinion on all sorts of things. It doesn't have to fit into a specific format or agree with everyone else's. That's football.

He came under a lot of pressure and coped reasonably well for the most part. Something went badly wrong in the marking for their second goal, and he looked at fault, but I'd need to watch the build up to that again. Unfortunately, saying that he was one of our better players yesterday is not saying a lot!

..............he was targeted from the off with high balls pumped at him.............and continued for 90 minutes..................

Not sure why Rico's getting grief for the goals. Seems to be Canos (again) and Benrahma most at fault for the first and second goals respectively.

For the first goal most people have a player/area during the corner and all start to move outwards as it's cleared, but Canos moves forwards and leaves his man unmarked on the penalty spot (who the others thought he had covered) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u03m80wH0M4&feature=youtu.be&t=14 . He cost us at least one other goal I can remember in a previous game doing this (even more blatantly).

The second goal is harder to see from the highlights, but I think that happens because Benrahma is tracking his man initially, so Rico goes to cover the man who's the biggest threat, smack in line with the penalty spot, but Benrahma lets his man go, and he trots in unmarked at the back: https://youtu.be/u03m80wH0M4?t=98
