Really, covid will hit clubs everywhere and prices will be lower, as odd as it may sound despite Toney scoring more goals, his lack of lightening pace will go against him. The likes of Mitrovic, McBurnie and even Glen Murray were all big strikers who didn't quite light up the prem.

Agree that there might be fewer clubs who will invest this summer, but I think there will still be some who will be willing to pay a high price tag if they are sure about him.

The lack of pace I'm nore sure about. Kane and Lewandowski aren't known for pace and they're the leading goalscorers across Europe's top leagues right now.

Pace isn’t a huge issue for him. Though I wonder a bit about his close control- he likes to knock the ball on rather than keep it at his feet and that makes it easier for defenders to knock away. That’s not a big problem if he has a second striker at close quarters but when he was more isolated often led to the ball not sticking with him. That’ll also impact on which clubs would see him fitting their style.

Rico Henry

Has Rico suddenly morphed into Ivan? I was wondering why we hadn't seen them together fo a while.

Rico Henry

I think you have to accept that there’s a ceiling for championship players and Ollie probably hit it with his age and his nationality pushing it to its highest level. Ivan has scored more but is that little bit older so wouldn’t expect him to bring in more than Watkins
I agree, but like the Benrahama saga a couple of years ago now, he had a long long contract. With Toney still having 4 years I still feel MB holds all the cards. There was the clamour for both Ollie and Säid to go two seasons ago but stayed one more season.

Rico Henry

Yes you certainly got the shape right but I think the 'subtle tweak' you refer to is in my opinion the game changer that made it work. I do not think it would work with any combination of Jansonn, Reid, Pinnock, Goode, MBS ? Norgaard is an exceptional player, leader and ball carrier. His immediate confidence in that position gave the whole team confidence.
Totally agree and I didn't intend to minimise the impact by referring to it as a tweak. It was a superb alteration. I also think it wont fully be appreciated by other teams who might see the change as simply three at the back and they may struggle to combat it. Its easier said than done to close down a centre back. Teams never found a way to subdue Beckenbauer who was the master of the craft. However let's see it working against a direct team next game. I'm optimistic that Thomas has found a system that can carry us through. I'd like to see Josh integrated if he gets fit. Tough on Fosu but l think he'd have to make way.

Rico Henry

Toney is same nationality and age as Watkins apart from a few months.

You're right! Don't know why but assumed Toney was older.. Thought Ivan had been linked with playing for Jamaica? Still feel Ollie has set the level and I don't think we'd break that even with Ivan's performances.

He was asked about Jamaica but turned them down, for now.

What’s that got to do with Rico Henry?

If you care to look back l have been advocating a switch to three at the back along with a few others. Nice to see it in action with the subtle additional tweak of playing Norgaard as a centre back bringing the ball out in the old sweeper style.Well done Thomas.
You' ve completely missed the point l made about Rico's height. Other things being equal l said that l would prefer a taller defender. The reason is obvious. If you pay a lot of money you want all the boxes ticked. So if you have the option of a taller defender who has pace, gets forward , crosses well and has a good fitness record , then you take the taller one.I will be very surprised if they are kicking the door down to sign Rico. He has his drawbacks . The Prem is a totally different level.
Re Mads he doesn't get forward enough and lacks pace. However he's done well as a stop gap . I didn't say he was better than Rico.

That perfect defender you are talking about don't exist and if he did he be worth over 200M. Nevertheless what I am really surprised about is your lack of knowledge of a modern day full back and what is required from them, which is not height. How you come to the conclusion that a height of a full back is a concern to a premiership team in the modern game is beyond me and the height of Rico will be some kind of drawback or a deal breaker. With so much evidence within the Premiership League for example; Tariq Lamptey 5'4, Aaron Cresswell 5'7, Ben Chillwell 5'8, Recardo Pereira 5'7, Kieran Tierney 5'8. The list goes on historical and worldwide and players listed are all internationals. I would say to you get ready to be surprised as you put it, I am sure Rico will get a few offers if we don't go up this season. As you all know I'm great fan of Rico who I believe will play for England in the near future.

I just hope Thomas keeps this formation of late because I believe we can go up automatically playing 3 at the back, but the other concern is playing this formation 'I was told' was suggested by team players which is not good on Thomas's CV, anyway this discussion might be for a new thread on here.

I would prefer a combination of Rico and Henrik as the latter has greater aerial ability and uses the ball in attacking areas very well. He doesn't have the pace of Rico of course so cannot get up and down the pitch anything like as well. It is not necessarily height that is required but heading ability and positional sense although to suggest that height is irrelevant is surely wrong?

I think Rico’s height is not very important but his crossing quality could do with improvement to become a good PL player. If we wanted a LWB with height MBS is showing he can do that and was improving game by game before our switch of tactics last weekend. But it is notable that for our style of play we looked much better with Bryan playing there than with MBS as his combination of pace and attacking ability were nearer what we want from Rico (actually in terms of attacking obviously far ahead) and as with Rico, pace makes up for any deficiency in defensive positioning. But if positioning is good, even little guys like Rico and Bryan can deal with aerial threats well as Bryan did with one ball from Preston past the far post to head away from an opponent about 6” taller than him.

I'm struggling here. My final point on height is that if l was managing a team and the oppo had a small full back I would target him with high balls and a taller striker and look for the knock downs. In open play resulting in crosses to the far post the little one would struggle so l'd target his post. So other things being equal l take a taller defender. After all defending is their priority.
If l may say so l think you could look at certain aspects of Rico's game which need upgrading particularly his final ball . But at this level l agree he has been great for us.
The type of player I like does exist. The best I have seen was Paulo Maldini of A C Milan who had the full monty.

Preston did that first half and diddy Bryan beat their beanpole every time.

Just about every opponent has targeted our left back, regardless of Rico or anyone else there.

Lucky us. As the commentator said the PNE guy should have done better. BTW Bryan isn't as diddy as Rico :D ⚽

I wonder why they don't target Henrik.I hadn't noticed a lot of high ball being sent at Mads but I might be wrong. No joy perhaps.

Last season some teams did target Henrik when Pontus was playing because the two of them could be a little slow. That was less of an issue this season as Ethan playing RCB was more mobile to cover.

I’d guess it’s based on their strengths and tactics. Most teams are stronger on the right and, if they’re playing long balls out wide, then a shorter full back is a target. If it’s a quick tricky winger, then Henrik would be the target.

It's interesting that the majority of teams knock it long to Rico. That's my recollection of this season. No tricky wingers ? Maybe winning a high ball out wide is the easy option?

Toney is superior to all those you mention and we have a reputation for nurturing the very best talent. We're Super Bees as I'm sure you'll agree, not some tin pot copy cat club!

Yes Ivan's acquired Rico's pace and Rico's goalscoring is set to take off.

Just imagine Ivan having Rico’s pace or Rico having Ivan’s final ball, finishing or height... a morph of those two would be a phenomenal footballer*

*Their both pretty damn good as they are

Rico Henry

That little bit extra makes all the difference ( so l have been told )
No difference at all, it is the jumping ability and power of the player, positioning of the player is very important too has someone else mentioned earlier in the thread. Look how many times we have seen small players win aerial battles because of there jumping power.

Most Prem income comes from TV money, there was no drop in payments to clubs and no drop in parachute payments that I am aware of. It will be business as usual fior the Brentford selling machine.

And potentially good for the buying side if shopping locally in L1&2.

Perhaps he is suffering with “long hamstring”.
Very good.
Being serious, Michael Owen’s later career was blighted by supposedly having ‘short hamstrings’.

Not being serious, all this talk of ‘high balls’ and ‘boxes’. It’s not unusual to be short and yet have comparatively long legs....

Over 2 months since he pulled , thought I saw a photo on the grass 2 wks ago, am I clutching at .......?

I think the latest was that neither he or Dalsgaard would be fit for the last couple of games of the season and would be touch and go for the play offs.. I'd imagine if we don't see either of them in the B team game next week then it's unlikely we'll see them in the play offs....

Rico Henry

Not featuring for the B team today. Do get the feeling time is running out for him to make a come back in time for the play offs? Maybe in time for the final.. if we make it?!

Rico Henry

Sergi as the wingback cutting in is working well. Would be a too large of a gamble to tweak things for a player coming back from injury at this stage imho

Doubt if Rico could provide as much attacking threat as Canos does there currently. I'd imagine if he were fit we'd be looking at tweaking the formation

Rico Henry

'Tweaking' in the playoffs is a sign you've got no idea what your best side is. At this point we have a way we play, the players are comfortable and we're winning, we stick with it in the playoffs. Think we next see Rico in an August preseason friendly at Slough Town.

The comms from the club haven't mentioned that this Salford match is the last of the season, so there might be more, to run in line with the first team season being extended due to the playoffs.

I seem to recall Fulham tweaking their formation at the very end of last season.....

Think there's plenty of time to go, and other B Team fixtures too.

Yep, they're playing Eastleigh on Monday, and in his interview after the last game Kane O'Connor said there were a few more games left..

Seems highly unlikely bearing in mind no B Team involvement, but has anyone else heard similar??
