Rico's normally ultra reliable, an 8/10 performer at the very least every time. I don't think I've ever seen him play as poorly as he did tonight. He looked hesitant right from the start, the penalty was mindless and his final ball going forward was consistently poor.

Spot on, let’s not forget that Ronaldo was on fire tonight and everything he did came off, Rico got a bit of a lesson. It’s only happened a couple of times this season and he didn’t have Ethan alongside that won’t have helped.

He wasn't massively out of position, he was marking Ronaldo on the left side. MBS got beaten by Elanga, and PJ and Ajer were ball watching and let Fernandes in free. Not really Rico's fault.

It was a solid challenge by CR and Gary Neville called it right in the commentary. RH was embarrassed by not being stronger and tried to make up for it. Stupid challenge that effectively put us out of the game. Not the end of the world and something he can learn from. Usually a highly reliable player so has plenty of credit in the bank.

That’s accurate. It looked to me like he got a bit flustered by being outmuscled and,as you say, cost us a chance of recovery by giving away that penalty. He’s a good solid player for us usually, so it’s not the end of the world.
I think in the close season he might try to develop some kind of disguise on what he intends to do with the ball when he’s attacking with it. It’s looks a bit telegraphed to me, but other than that, he’s great.

To be fair, CR does use his arm a bit and there is an argument for a foul, but it's still mostly shoulder to shoulder. If Toney had done that to Telles and a foul given against him we'd be moaning about it. None of it excuses the fact that Rico was the wrong side and then made a stupid challenge in the area against a player with particularly slippery boots on.

Rico's saved us enough times this season though to be allowed the odd mishap, so onwards and upwards.

Rico gambled on outpacing Ronaldo on the outside rather than getting goalside but Ronaldo used his strength to keep him off. Nothing wrong with the challenge. Rico then had a complete brain fart and gave away a soft pen. It is what it is. Literally his first big mistake of the season.

From a referee forum. I still think it was too one sided from Ronaldo to be a ‘coming together’ kind of shoulder to shoulder. I know Ronaldo used his strength but to me that was to an unfair advantage. But I agree it’s a very subjective topic.

Shoulder to shoulder IMO. But this is an aside to the main issue of him ending up wrong side of Ronaldo.

Rico has had a brilliant season and has shown himself to be amongst the best in the league. What I really like about him is how he has constantly striven to improve. Almost as if he works on his weaknesses and ticks them off one by one.

Who am I to tell him, but, in my view there is one area where he could get even better. And that is to trust in his own pace. So that if he gets wrong side, like last night, don't try and challenge from there as the consequences are never good. You have the pace to get back goal side. Similarly when caught out attacking and chasing back a winger from behind, don't lunge and foul him whilst he's still in his own half. You have the pace to catch him up properly without conceding a yellow. This has happened at least once this season. And finally, trust yourself more often to push the ball past the fullback and outpace him before you put in a cross. You can do this but rarely do (from a standing start, at least).

Spot on mate, he got a runaround against Liverpool and Arsenal away and that’s about it. He made a rash decision after Ronaldo showed his experience and made him look silly, Ronaldo would have done that to anyone last night in that form.
He’s had a brilliant first season in the best league in the World.
