Think you might be rightI’d lay money on this sequence. England fail to deliver at WC……. Gareth walks….new manager whoever it is brings Rico in.
Your kidding me ? Dunkey & Welbeck ?Absolute outrage if Rico isn’t in the 55, I believe from The Athletic who leaked it that Danny Welbeck and Lewis Dunk are in the initial squad. That’s quite bizarre
Your kidding me ? Dunkey & Welbeck ?
I think the 55 is/was final no?He might be now
ShawWhich lb are ahead of him?
Nothing is final till we play our 1st game .
....Cresswell.... another really good and consistent LFB for several years....but happy to rest on his laurels at WHUFC....not a winner perhaps....England need winners in all positions IMscottishO.Shaw

Always supported England as the ultimate level of football but for the first time kind of hoping this scenario plays out for both Rico and Ivan.I’d lay money on this sequence. England fail to deliver at WC……. Gareth walks….new manager whoever it is brings Rico in.
I don’t think it’s crazy. Hojbjerg is an excellent player in the same position ?Ivan and Rico might be too late to the party for a fairly conservative Southgate. Maybe it's linked to his lack of knowledge/trust about Brentford as relative newcomers to the Prem. Even Norgaard is not a regular starter for Denmark which is crazy given his club form. Might just take more time for our players to fully break through sadly.
I think he's used there in a back 4, he was at B&HA.Burn at left back?
Henry's one ahead of Mitchell this season, was behind last. I excluded Chilwell as he's only made 4 PL appearances this season and now injured.Just goes to show that whatever yardstick Southgate’s using, it’s not WhoScored! I’m struggling for others. Mitchell? Trippier? (On the wrong flank). ????
Playing cb for Newcastle this season.I think he's used there in a back 4, he was at B&HA.
OK, maybe they've still got him listed as a LB... moves Rico a place up the ranking.Playing cb for Newcastle this season.
He's not he is LB - Schar and Botman play CB as per the below:Playing cb for Newcastle this season.
Ah right. Thought they'd been playing 343.He's not he is LB - Schar and Botman play CB as per the below:
Anywho - Rico is not getting anywhere near the England squad whilst Southgate is manager unfortunately
He is way better than a right back playing as a left back. His defensive work ability and work rate is very good. My second favourite player behind Canos. However, when playing as a wing back you have to provide more assists and goals e.g. Chilwell, Zincenko Cancelo etc
I'm not saying he's as good as Cancelo, but just trying to put my point across.
I must be getting old, I want my left back to stop the other teams Right Sided player creating anything or scoring. I would want my midfielders and strikers be judged on goals and creating things.Very few LBs in the league are better than Rico defensively, let alone English LBs. Unfortunately 1 assist in 46 prem games is what's holding him back. Not selecting him for a 55 man squad is unjustifiable though
The issue is that Rico doesn’t have a great end product despite his fantastic attacking raids down the wing.I mean no slight on Rico with this comment;
but if Southgate is too pragmatic in his approach, what manager is going to come in with an expansive style and pick Rico?
Clearly you are as wingbacks are now judged on ability to create going forward maybe more so than their defensive abilities - certainly at international levelI must be getting old, I want my left back to stop the other teams Right Sided player creating anything or scoring. I would want my midfielders and strikers be judged on goals and creating things.
You’re a bit of dinosaur then I’m afraid as the game has changed, roles have expanded and expectations greater.I must be getting old, I want my left back to stop the other teams Right Sided player creating anything or scoring. I would want my midfielders and strikers be judged on goals and creating things.
Only 2 of those are potentially better, more reliable and offer as much as Rico IMHO.Shaw

The benefit to Brentford is that we – hopefully – will have a rested and fit first-choice left back for the resumption of the season after Christmas.Only 2 of those are potentially better, more reliable and offer as much as Rico IMHO.
So he still misses out for me, which is a little benefit for Brentford.
That's what I meant !The benefit to Brentford is that we – hopefully – will have a rested and fit first-choice left back for the resumption of the season after Christmas.
No arguments with any of that fella, I just keep seeing people say along the lines of "the next England manager will pick him", but if his skillset is not getting him picked by a cautious/defense-minded manager, I can't see him being picked an attack-minded one, especially not at international level where they do not have the same time to make the individual improvements. The issue is that Rico doesn’t have a great end product despite his fantastic attacking raids down the wing.
If he did I doubt we’d still have him because his defending and link up play is superb

I thought David Nugent resembled a sub for a Sunday pubs reserve teamJustin was at least given his chance, it was possibly the worst ever England debut in my lifetime and was rightly and thankfully hooked at half time.

11 international minutes, 1 goal ?I thought David Nugent resembled a sub for a Sunday pubs reserve team
I dislike Nugent so I’m probably biased11 international minutes, 1 goal ?
Mitchell's also had a run out but he's not been so good this season.Justin was at least given his chance, it was possibly the worst ever England debut in my lifetime and was rightly and thankfully hooked at half time.
Southgate has always favoured playing with wing backs over full backs and probably values attacking output far more than defensive output given the way he sets the team up. The bloke played Saka at LWB against Germany the other week.No arguments with any of that fella, I just keep seeing people say along the lines of "the next England manager will pick him", but if his skillset is not getting him picked by a cautious/defense-minded manager, I can't see him being picked an attack-minded one, especially not at international level where they do not have the same time to make the individual improvements.
He'd be a great signing for Pep's City (bench/cups for the first year or so whilst he's "moulded") but if Pep were England manager there's probably less chance than now with Gareth.
Poor bloke had a nightmare and for first twenty minutes he was looking at team mates as if to say” Where am I supposed to be playing and what am I supposed to be doing?”Southgate has always favoured playing with wing backs over full backs and probably values attacking output far more than defensive output given the way he sets the team up.
