Ron Jacobs RIP

Ron Jacobs RIP

I recall a Brentford Athletic Quiz Night, in Griffin Park, probably early 1980's. A number of current GPGers were there.
I was lucky enough to be in Ron's team.
One question was to name each of the Brentford away wins in the preceding season. No errors either way were allowed.
We had named about 5. Ron was sweating buckets trying to recall one more. The seconds were ticking away. Ron was sweating even more . We were all racking our brains, but looking to Ron for inspiration. He knew he was our main hope. He did not want to let us down. A bead of sweat dripped from his forehead. His brow furrowed. He scratched his head. We silently urged him on. The final seconds ticked by. Ron opened his mouth , about to say one more club's name, but , just as the words were about to come out, we heard the quizmaster call " Time up!"
Ron's slumped, head in hands, bereft at his failure. A broken man. We consoled him.
Only to hear the quizmaster call out " Correct! Well done Ron!" He had, indeed, got the answer spot on.
I believe we won an award for winners or runners up. It was a replica mini statue of Alan Whitehead, a much derided player at the time! Ron was aghast! The other finalists got a Graham Wilkins replica!!
Happy days, and a lovely memory of Ron...

Ron Jacobs RIP

On page 149 of the 70s book , there is an interview with Ron and others on their way to Scunthorpe being asked about the sale of Roger Cross * He would have only been about 34. Other interviewess inlude Brian Jennings and a certain Stan Willis. The other bloke was 88 and on his way to Scunny away !!

Ron Jacobs RIP

I didn`t know very well at all, he probably didn`t even know my name, I just you to say hello when I saw him in the Brickies etc.

But I can only rememer Ron having mobility issues and then of course a stick. It must have taken a lot of effort for many years, to get out and on buses to varios sporting events etc.

Ron Jacobs RIP

Did he have glasses?

Ron Jacobs RIP

Always used to have a beer in the New Inn when he was living around the corner and meet him at away matches, he loved Brentford , and had so much knowledge on players from 50+ years ago to recent signings. He was a legend of a fan , RIP Ron, you will be missed.

Ron Jacobs RIP

yes, you must know Ronnie

Yeah I do know him, was just hoping it wasn't him - I'd have to save the fanzine for him if he couldn't get to the game when we sold. Told me he had every Issue since we started...

Ron Jacobs RIP

Having read the Get West London link, I should point out that the figures quoted within the feature regarding funeral costs, are not those given when I was asked to give details thus far. In fact, in this regard, no figures were provided and indeed costs subsequently agreed bear no relation whatsoever to those within the article.

Ron Jacobs RIP

Since we first received news of the sad passing of Ron Jacobs just over a week ago, Bees fans through pledges alone, and a collection at last night`s Fans Forum, have raised almost £3,000.

Meanwhile the family that is Brentford Football Club spreads far and wide, and through such contacts we have thankfully been able to trace his sister, with whom contact was lost some twenty years ago. I spoke to Valerie earlier today and she is totally overwhelmed and supportive of the magnificent efforts so far witnessed in memory of her brother.

Whilst we still await “release” from West Middlesex Hospital (which is not expected until near the end of next week) which will then enable us to organise a date for Ron`s ultimate farewell, I am pleased to report that through the Brentford family we have organised both Funeral Directors and a Minister to conduct the service. Once we are in a position to do so we will announce the full details but we hope to be able to conduct the service at Mortlake Crematorium.

With regard to those who have pledged, should the game go ahead tomorrow (Saturday) and you are in attendance, Derek Hazel will be located in the upstairs Reception in Braemar Road both before and after the game and can take receipt of monies.

Those who are unable to get to the game, or indeed should the game not go ahead, we would ask that cheques, made payable to Brentford Football Club, should be sent in and addressed to myself marked - Peter Gilham (R.J.), c/o Brentford Football Club, Griffin Park, Braemar Road, Brentford TW8 0NT. Please also write on the back of the cheque – Ron Jacobs.

Should those who have pledged prefer to pay by debit/credit card, I would ask that they contact me via my email address of [email protected]. I will gladly call them back, should they so wish, at a convenient time and take their details.

The Receptionists at Brentford Football Club can indeed take receipt of pledges at any time during normal office hours.

Unfortunately these are the only methods by which we can take receipt of monies already pledged and for those who may wish to do so in the near future.

Once again should the game go ahead, volunteer bucket collectors will be located on The Bill Axbey Stand side of the ground, on Ealing Road and also in the forecourt in Braemar Road. There will also be bucket collections within The Hive and also a number of local pubs.

There are also A4 landscape or portrait posters available should anyone wish to utilise them in their efforts to raise funds. To receive a poster/s, please email me at the address above.

Thank you all again for your incredible support, which is of no surprise. After all we are all Bees Fans!

Peter Gilham

Great work well done to all.

Ron will be looking down with that big cheeky grin on his face.

Ron told me he used to drink with the late great Jim Towers when he lived in Hounslow also a paper he used to like to get every week was the Surrey Comet because he had a soft spot for Kingstonian FC I remember him being at the Kingstonian v Hanwell Town London Senior Cup last season it was less than a year ago and he told me he had to get two busses to get to the game on a cold mid week eve but that was Ron he loved his footy and if he could get there he would he was known at so many local non-league football clubs im sure so many people at these clubs will not know of Ron's passing.

Just a thought but is it worth informing "Non league" newspaper and sending a photo as might reach a lot of people.

Yeah that could be a good idear.

Ron always read the Non-League Football Paper every Sunday looking for all the local teams results. He told me he would go and watch Kingstonian FC play a lot because they play a lot of there games on a Sunday.

I know Ron had loads of football programes and sport books in his flat I do hope they don't get dumped in a skip or something like that.

Sadly his home was burgled a few years back when he was in hospital and the scum stole a lot of his Bees stuff

Great picture. Taken on a Griffin Park FC end of season boat trip. Probably Ron receiving our 'Supporter of the Year' award which would have been well merited a he regularly made up between 33% and 50% of the crowd.

I would have been there and would date it as 1986 or 87.

Yes Ron told me about this a few times it was very bad.

He did build up a bit of a collection of programes and books again over the last few years I gave him at least 20+ football programes over the last year.

Ron Jacobs RIP

Until recent times, when he had to move down to the Paddock because of difficulty with the steps, Ron sat next to me in Braemar D block. I can’t pretend I really got to know him that well, but he was always very pleasant, and when he turned up about 30 seconds before KO (as he often did), we’d quip about him being held up in the pub! He’d often give me the team sheet he’d acquired, and on the rare occasions when he might get over-agitated at a match, or use what he thought bad language, he’d always apologise to me. Not that I was offended, but showed he was a gent.

I remember him getting agitated at one match and calling the opposition supporters ‘clowns’ and the officials ‘doughnuts’! I also remember thinking the worst when he failed to show up to a few matches a few seasons ago, but when he re-appeared, he explained he’d been in hospital following a heart attack. He’d hated missing the games, and not being able to put a bet on the horses. I’d always look out for him at the away games I went to, kind of like a lucky omen. His stamina and determination to get to matches never failed to impress me. He could sometimes get irritated, for example a chap in the middle of the row in front of us would invariably leave matches, for whatever reason, about 5 minutes before the end. Used to drive Ron up the wall, and I still smile now when I recall him saying ‘Does he do that at the cinema?! People probably ask him what happened in the film, he must have to reply, ‘Don’t know, I left before it finished!’

He lived for his Brentford, and it’s been fascinating and quite emotional reading others memories of him here, I feel I’m getting to know him better now.

Ron Jacobs RIP

Obviously football supporting men are not programmed to type such things but I've read through the posts in a variety of places and one can't help having a bit of a lump in the throat both at the basic situation of one of our supporters as well as the sentiments expressed. Well done to all those involved. I'll be sending a few quid.
