Very pleased he's signed. One of our best players in my opinion and fits in well to Uwe's style of play. Even if some think he 'just' takes a decent free kick, that's still a pretty good asset to have in any team.

He was the best attacking player home and away against the Bees that season 08/09, that's why those that saw him, thought Scott had pulled a masterstroke signing him. Through many circumstances Sam over three seasons has played 60 games for 10 goals, a year extension is just about spot on.
Uwe likes him and sees him as as pivotal, if Sam can't get round them on the outside, I expect Uwe will continue to use him centrally, but from what I saw from Forshaw on Saturday, I expect him to give Sam a run for his money in the central role in the next few weeks.
Saunders, whether you agree or not is a player admired by other League 1 clubs, whether it be just for the dead ball skills, so it makes good sense for Uwe to get him on board as a building block for next season whilst still having a go this! A good enough shrewd move IMHO.

Hope his form doesn't drop now he's signed a new deal. Good news though, hope he can keep up his form going into next season.

At least he's not described as a winger any more. I think it right that he's offered another year but I hope it's only a bit part; we've got to be able to find better, if we haven't already got one in Forrester.

I just don't see Forrester making a significant contribution in a Brentford shirt. He's just another of those enigmas passing through Griffin Park. Hope he proves me wrong.

Sam is pivotal in that more often than not, when he plays well Brentford play well. Glad he's signed on again.

I agree, I don't know what all the fuss is about ?.....people saying Forrester is going to take Sam's place, why ?.....what is all the hype based on ?........unless I've missed a load of games that Forrester has been impressive.....I don't think so.

Fully agree, imo his goals total from midfield would warrant a new contract and as you say 1 year seems spot on.

AS I have saud in a previous post I wont get too excited about Forrester until he is consistently performing week in week out. At the moment that seems a million miles away.

I didn't say that Forrester is impressive, I used the word "if". In a L1 squad that is aiming for the Championship, there needs to be some key attacking players. Ideally, this should include 'proper' right and left wingers (meaning the ability to beat a full back, get to the by-line and put in a decent cross) plus a central, attacking midfielder who can spot and make a pass through an opposition defence. In my opinion, we do not have any of these. Sam is not a winger and has - for the one match against Carlisle - played the forward player in a midfield diamond with some success. I am not writing him off, I'm suggesting that we need better players in these critical positions.

He played the same position against Wycombe to an equally strong performance. The central attacking role is clearly better for him that being on the wing (he's competent there but it's not to his strengths, crossing aside) and if he's played there more I could see him flourish. He says his ideal position is behind the strikers, with being on the left his second favourite (apparently).

Forrester has indicated he could be better there, but he seems very injury prone... If he could get his fitness sorted I reckon he could be a hell of a player, but we need to see if he can get past that fitness barrier.

Yes you're right, if we want to progress we need better quality players. In an ideal world where money was available there would be a few ahead of Sam who aren't good enough for mid table Lge 1 let alone and potential Championship side. IMO Sam is the best passer of the ball and the most dangerous free kick specialist, he's not a winger and never has been, his best position is just behind the strikers. I think maybe we need to take the spotlight off Sam and look at a few others first......

Good news IMO that Sam has signed - probably our most creative player though somewhat inconsistent. Maybe if he continues to play behind the front three / two that consistency will come.

As far as Harry Forrester I've not seen enough of him to make any proper judgment - he certainly seems injury prone.

Forrester Ex Watford, Kilmarnock, Ason Villa and could of been the mighty Ajax.


On paper it's a no brainer who has the better CV. Apparantly he scored a beauty from 40 yards in this weeks developement game.He's getting fitter Sam. Time to look over your shoulder now Mr Saunders.

Alternatively you could see it that Saunders has progressed in each club he has signed for, whereas forrester bar villa has dropped down levels meaning they were both playing at levels that they were either too good for or not good enough.

Forrester made a big contribution to the MK Dons comeback when he came on. But until he stays injury free and I've seen more of him, I know who I would rather have of the two...Saunders is a key player for us. He has some games when his contribution isn't great but that sort of player always will. He gets the ball down and looks to make things happen. It may not always come off but we don't have many players who are prepared to do anything other than play it safe when they have the ball. We need players like Sam Saunders and I'm pleased he's here for at lest another year.

i have to admit i thought saunders was very overrated but he has been excellent in his more central/free role and am delighted hes staying on.

That sums it up well. Under-appreciated, as shown by this thread, despite everyone always crying out for creativity. Whilst he isn't setting League One alight, he has scored and created a number of goals this season and still gets a lot of criticism.

.............has taken a while, but his all round game is now improving.............he even gave away two free kicks due to his tackling.............worthy now of being in the starting eleven...........

I've never taken to him, used to think apart from the odd free kick he was a wate of a shirt, however, thought he was excellent y/day, has Uwe found the role and formation for him? The extra bonus of his tackling/fighting for the ball is very pleasing.

Personally I thought it showed a lot of vision to 'see' it in the first place and then really good execution and beautifully weighted to go between the defenders; although Clayton still had a lot to do even when he got on it it is the kind of ball that can beat any defence.

He is well, well worth the new contract, I reckon.

Pleased he is playing a central role. Never quick enough for a wide player IMO. He's a good footballer with an eye for goal who will try and make things happen.

It took Uwe to play him in his best position, he was never a winger even when he was at the Daggers , he's the creative midfielder we were looking for and already had. A few of us said this last season and when Scott was Manager, but there were plenty on here slating him every week. Well done Sam we always knew you are a top player and well done Uwe for believing that 442 is not the bee all and end all ....

Forrester and Dave won the ball, Forrester passed to Saunders who put the ball through to Clayton :)

Got a real good reception when he came off.
Top performance tonight. showing some passion and commitment too, better at tracking and tackling, ball seems to stick to his foot like clue in some challenges lol brilliant

For Saunders I think this has been critical to getting the best out of him. It has taken a long time but the confidence Uwe has shown him is now paying off, looked good again last night.

massively increased his work rate the last 10 games and has become a key player for us now.Great free kick esp as they had 10 men in the wall
