Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney

Probably one of the most over rated footballers of our time, benefiting from a media frenzy desperate to sell "football to the masses". How many goals has he scored at major international tournaments for England?.. He is nothing player compared to Gary Lineker or Alan Shearer and shows that England have been going backwards for many years now, despite the "so called" best league in the world.

How many goals did Greaves score at a major tournament but he is being lorded as much better than Rooney. He also played back in the day when players would get 7 goals in a game which doesn't happen any more.

Wayne Rooney

He is still very, very average. Unfortunately, so are most of him team mates. A lot of money for paid a distinctly average footballer, no matter how keen he might be to play for his country.

I think you will find he is paid by Man unt and has earned most of his money in the last 10+ years when he has been anything but average.

Wayne Rooney

I'm not entirely convinced we wouldn't be better off playing Hogan up front at the moment ;)

He scored 1, in 1962 W/C.

He did however score 7 in 2 games against N.Ireland and further hat tricks against Luxemburg and Scotland

Wayne Rooney

Seriously? Like, seriously?

Just watch him the next game he plays, watch how many things he tries that don't come off. He is so far past his best (when he could have probably got in a world XI) it's laughable.

Well I watched Sturridge and Walcott last night and the things they tried that didn't come off, but they got in the starting 11.

Why the hell did Antonio not start or even come on? in form player

We're not. As I said in the original quote....(you journo - out of context quoter ).....:
Problem is we're not sh*t....and that almost smacks of the fear you're describing (although we have been playing sh*t).

We have the players to do far better than that against a team like Slovenia. The management/selection/training of those players is poor. Of course they take a fair share of responsibility but I maintain that we're not getting the best out of the players we do pick (or selecting the right ones for the team at times).

Ie - we're a fairly decent team being managed poorly and many teams would love to have the options we have at our disposal.

Not sure he is that in form and also Wrst Ham don't have a settled position for him. Walcott has however been very much in form for Arsenal and Sturridge been pretty good for Liverpool. Thing is England side would struggle for top 6 spot in premier league imho.

Sure but they have at least played well in patches in the past 12 months. "Wazza" has not.

Sturridge injured for large parts and Walcott regular sub last season suggests you may be incorrect. Rooney although not excellent was one of Uniteds more consistent players last season but not as a regular forward so didn't score too many.

Even wenger has said How good walcott has been this season.

And no-one is good if they are injured.

Anyway lets agree to differ.

A brave/imaginative manager with foresight might have picked him against Malta just to stop him from playing for Ireland. What was to lose? England would still have won, and it would have been seen as an absolute master stroke if he had scored. Still, I'm probably biased and fans of other clubs might make similarly bold suggestions about their own players, I suppose.

Which I also said you then went on talk about their performances over 12 months!!
Clearly you dislike Rooney as much as Jim White and how other players who perform worse are not judged equally.

There are definitely certain posters on here who have it in for Rooney! .. for someone to claim he has been an "average player" is laughable

Not sure if its his Man U connections or just infuriated at his earning power, I don't know, but to become England's highest scorer and soon to be Man U's highest goal scorer is quite a feat?

And IMO that includes WR.

We have some good players but over the years they have performed poorly as a team due to poor coaching and yes men managers. The England team has no identity.

Wayne Rooney

I'd prefer Rooney to Sturridge...
He isn't world class but he is better than him.

:imwith:

Sturridge is so over rated it's frightening . Mind you I could say that for most of the national team.
Henderson as captain ??
We've come a long way :(

Wayne Rooney

Never rated Sturridge...scored 1 goal at the WC..'tap in' BTW... and all of a sudden he is Messi/Pele combined....prefer the Arse striker ...:sorted:..You Reds...

So how come the very best Managers like Sven and Capello failed so miserably. The root cause is the hierarchy and old farts in the FA.
Get rid and start all over again with the focus on youth and get intelligent, articulate, pros coming to the end of their playing days on accelerated coaching programs to run academies and a few respected mentors like Wenger and Venables working with a Head coach, gawd knows who that might be.
We might not qualify for a couple of tournaments but evolution is impossible it's time for Revolution.

I still think it might be a whole lot simpler to fix.

Numerous former players have criticized Capello and said that team spirit under him was sh*t. Not just for England. Even Del Piero said the same about Juve. So in the limited time you get to work with players, where building team spirit and cohesion is critical, it may be no surprise that he didn't do well.

Sven did quite well - 2002 we went close in the WC and lost to the winners Brazil in the QFs via that spawny Ronaldinho goal. In 2004 we weren't too bad either and lost on pens to the hosts Portugal on pens after a disallowed goal. 2006 wasn't brilliant but again, culminated in narrow elimination after Rooney's stamping on someone and getting sent off and Beckham being unavailable, again on penalties to Portugal in the QFs. We really weren't that far off winning things during that period and fine margins meant we didn't.

I genuinely think the right manager could work wonders. It would need to be a case of not being tactically naïve, but more importantly having a real team spirit, and get them working hard as a cohesive unit. I don't think the usual bland (Southgate) "go out there and express yourselves" sh*t is not enough. Venables being a great example of this. Problem is, like you said at the start, the old farts tend to pick the wrong choice every time. I know a few don't like Redknapp, but at the time of Hodgsons appointment, 95% of fans/media/pundits/players all were behind HR getting the job and so they pick the old granddad instead.

The FA couldn't pick Harry as the press would have had a field day and anything they dug up on Big Sam would have appeared small change. I think they were right and Harry was pleased he didn't have to refuse it.

You're talking about the best generation of players in 30 years when you talk about our near misses under Sven though. The squad now can't hold a candle to the players we had then. It'd need a miracle worker to get anything like success out of the current squad IMO.

Think 2002 was our best chance with the best set of players we've had in a while, just a shame Brazil had a quality team, if Bentley was around back then and in the team I think we would have won it ;)

We weren't brave enough, that game was there to be won yet we seemed to settle for losing 2-1?
So disappointed we didn't throw the kitchen sink at them even in last 5 minutes, felt like we were playing as if we were drawing and looking for extra time or penalties rather than any urgency to get back in the game.
I blamed Sven for that.

I might agree to some degree but also disagree that our current squad of players is so so far from having potential with the right management. I think this is just our classic leaping from heros to zeros when the reality is somewhere in between.

Wayne Rooney

A tad over rated. As are most England players.

If they are that good, why aren't they at Barcelona/Bayern Munich/PSG/Real Madrid or at least the subject of stupidly high bids to play abroad?

And perhaps that is the telling question. Very few British players have been poached to play for the top European clubs, some have played at lesser clubs with success but I can't recall Real Madrid being interested in anyone other than Bale, who is an exceptional talent

In the main I believe our players are just average and even the " golden generation" we're not the best in Europe. Different managers with different records have all had a go and ultimately failed. As such I am not sure who could get a " song" out of the talent available.

Rooney has done well and his goal return cannot be ignored however he has never lived up to the expectations his initial impact on the game produced. Would suggest that he, and the majority of the present squad, would not be getting a game for Germany, Spain France etc. As such are we surprised when the National team struggles.

It's not the fault of Rooney if he is selected and st times he does seem to carry the can for all the team. More it is the general dearth of real talent and the desire for work rate beyond everything else that will prevent us moving forward.

The demands for instant success or the sack means Managers cannot allow players to develop in the teams, they have to change their games to accommodated the clubs need for instant success or to stay in the league with the big bucks. As such talent has to be put to one side and ultimately be forgotten on the alter of success.

What were the expectations? He is England's top scorer, soon to be Uniteds top scorer ever and has won every trophy including Champions league. He can't win a World Cup or Euros for England on his own.

Wayne Rooney

..............contributed almost nothing last night...........there must be better than this for International football............put him out to pasture...............

Wayne Rooney

I've begun you find out amusing hour people can't see it. You could literally have put in any championship player in instead of him and would have done no worse, and a lot would have done better.

If we had our brains wiped and didn't know his past, we would be asking why this guy was in the team.

Wayne Rooney

China or USA and career over soon I suspect.

In the past I've thought Rooney was contributing something to the team but he was a total passenger last night. Definitely time to give someone else a go.

Most England players may well be overrated, but there is a very good reason why they're not playing abroad: Money.

Fact is, English clubs are awash with cash, so there's very little incentive for players to go abroad.

Indeed, English players would demand rather more money overseas than they can get at home, so as to compensate for the additional risk entailed in moving abroad (not settling, or family not settling etc).

Meanwhile, you mention four clubs who do have England-scale finances, but that's still only 44 players taking to the field at any one time, and they have the pick of the world, just like our wealthiest clubs.

Which in turn explains why so many leading English clubs often have few, if any, English players.

Which in turn leads to another problem.

Since leading English clubs rely so heavily on buying ready-made players from abroad, who are in their mid-20's (i.e. approaching their peak), then good young English talent can't get a look-in in their formative years (late teens, early 20's).

Which means many (most?) never get the chance to develop into the players they might be.

Yet they're never likely to go abroad to a decent League and hone their skills while young, when the likes of Chelsea will pay kids £10k-20k per week, who haven't even played a first team game for them yet.

Have SSN on its loop at the moment and is this Rooney story a massive non-story. Apparently because Jose says he can't guarantee that Rooney will be at Old Trafford at the end of the season, it means Rooney must be off. Some of these interviewers are just plain stupid.

I heard that it was "can't guarantee he will be here at end of the month" that's when Chinese transfer window closes

From what I saw on SSN of Jose's interview he actually said he couldn't guarantee that he (Jose) would be at MUFC at the end of the season so how could he guarantee a player would be, and when asked if Rooney would be still there at the end of next month Jose said ask the player, he wasnt going to force a 'club legend' out. SSN just finding something to fill the small hours with imo.

Wayne Rooney

It's sad how far he's fallen at a relatively young age especially as he's been overtaken massively by Zlatan who's about 5/6 years older and been playing longer.

Oh well he can always get a game for England.

Wayne Rooney

Always thought he was over rated personally ever since he burst into the scene. You don't score the amount of goals he does without being a good player but shouldn't of been on the pedastal he was put on IMO. Not quite the 'world class' player he was bigged up to be
