AFCON 2024

AFCON 2024

I’m watching Cameroon vs Guinea now with my wife, and we’re watching Angola vs Algeria at 8pm. Hope this helps ??
I didn't mean you I meant Smithy who said he was watching at work. I expect you are in some far away place in a tropical downpour under a corrugated iron shack watching on a black and white tele with David Bowie's let's dance on the juke box.

Toto’s Africa or anything by Johnny Clegg, Salif Keita or Kanda Bongo Man, purleeze ?

AFCON 2024

Bounedjah bang - Algeria 1-0 against the Palancas Negras with an incredible strike from the outside of his right foot ??

AFCON 2024

Oyyyyyyiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!

Angola equalise against the Desert Foxes, 1-1.

Mabululu penalty ???

AFCON 2024

Huge point for Angola against Algeria, the 2019 champions. That’s now six opening AFCON games that Angola haven't lost ? ??

AFCON 2024

I know I’m barking into the void here ? but Burkina Faso get a 90+6 min penalty against Mauritania, and Bertrand Traore puts it away ?

AFCON 2024

Sorry number 27, can you spell that again for me please?

Yeah. So that’s that Fulham w*nker Aboubakar Kamara, who played for them between 2017 and 2021. He’s the one who took the ball off Mitrovic in the game against Huddersfield for a penalty - and missed ?

Withe greatest of respect your wife must be either African, or inflatable
Neither - she likes football, likes Africa, hates sh*t tv so we never watch anything other than documentaries, decent films or sport, and has lived in Libya and Ghana with me. We’re currently watching Namibia vs Tunisia. Namibia are doing remarkably well so far. Hope this helps.

Oyiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Namibia win their first ever game at AFCON by beating Tunisia 1-0!!!! Tunisia won it in 2004, and have reached the quarterfinals in six of the last nine AFCON editions.

Few surprises so far ?

Few surprises so far ?
In a few words - crikey, yes! So far we’ve seen some quite astonishing results. Few would have foreseen:

- Chris Hughton’s Ghana losing to Cape Verde - you what?;
- Salah’s Egypt desperately drawing with Mozambique was crazy;
- Whilst the Super Eagles are poor, nobody would have thought Equatorial Guinea would have achieved a draw with them;
- Cameroon drawing with Guinea was a poor effort by the Indomitable Lions;
- Angola got a great point in their draw with Mahrez’s Algeria;
- And Namibia beating Tunisia last night…. OMG ?

All in all, it’s a great AFCON to date. Not sure if the results are showing a decline in quality in the usual big teams (though Nigeria remain woeful and have been that way for 18 months or so now) or previously ignored talent from the ‘minnows’ stepping up, but all in all I’m enjoying it greatly. And today we have Morocco vs Tanzania (‘Mon the Taifa Stars) at 1700 and then - the big one - DR Congo vs. Avram Grant’s Zambia. My money is on the Chipolopolo ??

Shame so few others are taking an interest in AFCON - but at least those who read my nonsense are getting to learn the nicknames for African National squads ? #PubQuizMaterial

AFCON 2024

Pleasant surprise: Steve Vickers is commentating for the Tanzania vs Morocco game. Used to listen to him on Star FM when I lived in Zimbabwe ??.

AFCON 2024

Wissa to start tonight?
DR Congo v Zambia at 20:00

I think he will start. But it’s going to be an unpredictable game.

Congo’s captain, Chancel Mbemba, is playing in his fifth AFCON. That’s Chancel Mbemba with the four different birth dates……

AFCON 2024

Tanzania’s team is……..interesting. They’re fielding tonight players from Wealdstone, Aldershot and Boreham Wood (hello Cliff ?), and a player from Basford United from the seventh tier of English football (Northern Premier League). They’ve also got a player who plays in the sixth tier of Spanish football, and one from the Western Conference of Canadian football. Their goalkeeper plays in the Swedish fourth division. They’ve just put on as a sub a guy who doesn’t even play club football anywhere at present…..

Fun fact: 18 members of Morocco’s 27-strong AFCON squad weren’t born in Morocco.

AFCON 2024

Ten man Taifa Stars losing 0-3 to the Atlas Lions :(

Very ill disciplined and even amateur Tanzanian side unfortunately.

I once worked with a Tanzanian, who pronounced it Tan Zane e ear, as opposed to Tan Zan Ear.

Fun Fact.

Steve - STOP confusing Kakuta for Wissa. I know they’re both bald black blokes but Kakuta weighs a stone more than Wissa and is a foot shorter! ?

AFCON 2024

Fun fact - Wissa is the most valuable player on the pitch!

AFCON 2024

Penalty to the Leopards!

Edit - overturned

AFCON 2024

Wissa should have just blasted that in with his left foot rather than do the unselfish thing and pass it to a colleague who fell over! ?

AFCON 2024

1-1 draw after Congo totally dominated the game.

AFCON 2024

Former Middlesbrough and Birmingham City forward Emilio Nsue scores for Equatorial Guinea versus Guinea-Bissau, 1-0.

I think this AFCON, like the last edition, will be a good one for Equatorial Guinea. Their first game was a draw against Nigeria.

AFCON 2024

3-1 to Equatorial Guinea now, second goal the longest long ball ever. Bounces over the Bissau defence and then easily slotted in.

AFCON 2024

Nsue gets his hatrick. Only the 18th hatrick in AFCON history, and EG’s first ever.

4-1 to EG! ??

AFCON 2024

AFCON 2024

Cheers. Bet most gpger’s are hoping Nigeria go as far as possible in the tournament… ?
