Andy Scott

By my reckoning he is now our longest serving manager since the mid-90s, this is the first major problem he's encountered and it beggars belief that people are calling for his head.

Technically, isn't this the second major problem he has faced. The first was being tainted by all things Butcher and trying (successfully) to halt our plunge into the land now occuopied by Loo Town

Andy Scott

we'll be ok and i generally back andy. he is the best manager we have had for years.

one of my few concerns from the summer is that the central forward line is too old.

well, cort is like an old man, forster is an old man in football terms (even in cricket at his age they are veterans!), and once past 30 knocks and niggles take longer to get over let alone serious injuries. two of the four aren't fit and haven't been all season.

i much prefer a couple of experienced strikers plus a couple of ambitious youngsters snapping at their heels. dj, plucked from non-league, being an obvious example in recent history.

also younger players have greater sell-on value are any good. dj, again, being an example.

my little comments about his transfer policies aside, i am an andy fan.

he is a bright bloke and will turn things round!

Andy Scott

Bet many wouldnt have predicted we would beat Hull City, Sheff Weds and Everton

but then again bet many didnt predict we would lose to Rochdale and Carlisle

Andy Scott

Little light and shade required methinks

Since we beat them Sheff Weds have picked up zero points and fallen from 1st to 14th

Since Walsall beat us they have picked up three points are one goal better off

Andy Scott

Surely we are limited to who we can go for ie a big name because of our limited Salary package. I think Big Ben mentioned that As earns £120,000 a year, so how much do we think we can up to regadring the Managers Salary
Less of the Big mate,120k was a guess not a fact.

Andy Scott

I wouldn't be comfortable with Sinton or Holdsworth. Deano is obviously a good prospect but has only managed in the conference for a couple of months. Sinton never took Fleet out of Rhyman One despite several cracks at the play-offs. I'm not sure that qualifies him to manage in League One.

I think it would be ridiculous to get rid of Scott though. Posters can fudge the stats anyway they want. I can't be bothered to look them all up but on one end of the spectrum, Nick Logan will say we've only lost one in eight and conceded two goals in six games. Northampton Bee will point out that we've only won eight out of 30 (or something like that), while I think it was Hanworth that said Charlie has only scored two in 16. The most worrying stat for me is four goals in eight games and that happens to be the one that AS has acknowledged.

If there was no sign that things could improve, then I would say 'yes, let's get Scott out'. But during the periods people are talking about we hammered Huddersfield 3-0, matched Millwall at their place, hammered Sheffield Wednesday and had one of the best night's in the club's history last week. Yes, AS has much greater resources than the likes of Leroy, Fitz, Butcher etc. but the difference is he shows us signs that we can do something - the other three didn't.

Yes, he has made mistakes. I think Lee should've kept his place, I dopn't think Forster is being used effectively, I can't see any reasoning in dropping Saunders off the bench for Hudson on Friday. Yes, the football is awful at times but at times - Swindon, Sheff Wed - we have played some great stuff. AS is young and inexperienced, he will make mistakes but just think about the difference when he took over from Butcher - the team and the belief was transformed almost overnight; that wasn't down to luck. The following season we won the league and last year we came in the top 10 regardless of whether we "limped over the line" or not.

Good, well balanced, common sense post.

Due to my frustration from Friday night I have not contributed to this thread until now. Although primarily a Scott supporter it does start to make you think about things in a different light when you see the run of performances in games like Hartlepool/Everton/LO. It calls into question your own beliefs, and it would have been very easy for me to go directly onto the GPG and rant. However, after a few days when you start to look at the bigger picture in a calmer light, common sense takes over. IMO this post says it all, Scotty deserves a fair crack to put things right. This is the first real big hiccup, where league results have not been up to much despite in some cases the performance being good. We have also seen the team perform very well against higher league opposition so there is something there. The obvious issue is that the goals for column needs to be much higher, easier said than done. This is time to show support and remain calm, as this is the same man who for the last 3 seasons has consistently improved our position, that is a FACT. Give him some slack, let him learn and continue to give him and the team support. We really had something to complain about when Butcher was in charge, the situation we are in now bears no comparison.

Andy Scott

I've calmed down a lot, I hate the football or lack of it that we see, the amount of no-shows we put in as a club under Scott is amazing, I could list them all but what's the point. As a fan, I never have a clue if we are going to limp our way to another shocking defeat or actually turn up, this really must stop. We are a 1st Division and not a pub team who have been on the piss the night before, there is no excuse for the horror shows. All I ever ask of a BFC team is that we compete, the fans turn up but the last few years there have been many times where the team doesn't. Losing unluckily or to the better team happens but we have lost some right stinkers, it really shouldn't happen as I always believe we are better than that. Compete and lose is understandable, drift and lose without working the keeper is not and that has become a habit. I went out and got pissed on Saturday night, that was Scott and BFC's fault too, I don't know who gives AS the rocket he deserves but I hope to high heaven that someone has.

Since we beat them Sheff Weds have picked up zero points and fallen from 1st to 14th

L1 success is like a limited overs run chase.
You start chasing 99 off 138 to romp to victory.
Bad Light reduces your required target to 88 for second place.
Some shady umpiring further reduces objective to 80 points for comfortable play off position.
Then Duckworth Lewis amends total to 76 for sixth and success
or 75 for seventh and failure but progress so ultimately success (if your AS)

We have to score 70 off 114 and the last thing you need is for the number of opportunities to reduce and match the number of points required.

Next Three Games:-

Brighton
Charlton
Oldham

How many points we need depends on what your expectations are
(poll please)

Should we be pushing for the play offs?
Should we be looking to equal last seasons 9th place finish?
Should we be looking for survival but not down to the wire?
Should we be expecting a relegation dogfight?

Andy Scott

Can those that are saying its too early like me have the opportunity to change our vote after Tuesday's game at Brighton please Mods?:fishing:

The one overriding comment that my mates that dont support Brentford, have levelled at us over 40 years of supporting the Bees is that we lack ambition. Examples like selling Forster and DJ at crucial times.

In this case its the sheer number of people on here that have still either not got the point in that

if we want to push for the play offs things must change immediately ie tomorrow night!

or that are just happy to plough along and wait for Prince Andrew to turn his football from an ugly frog into a more regal style of play and achieve mid table obscurity.

IF I am to be attracted back to GP this season then either the style of football and the success rate/ win ratio has to change or the Manager.

There is no point sacking Andy Scott if we are looking to avoid relegation because I have no fear on that part sh*te football or otherwise.

But if we are looking to push for the play offs we must win two of the next three games and pick up a point in the other.

I get the point i just think it is so wrong its untrue with all due respect.

Andy Scott

We've played well against some top teams and have shown we have quality to beat strong teams. It will come good especially at home no doubt but the longer it takes to kick in the further off the pace we are and our season could be over come xmas.

I really think Alexander needs to be dropped for a few games to freshen up the forward line with Forster or Cort starting, maybe even put 3 in midfield and get Weston and Adams playing as forwards with Charlie upfront. Weston and Adams are huge outlets and we need to get the ball wide on the floor at every chance.

Ok leave AS in the job, lets avoid that issue.

Explain to me how you see this season panning out and how, wherever we finish in your expectations, how we are going to achieve that?

I was so optimistic about this season even after seeing the 5 - 0 drubbing by Fulham. Now,four home games in to the season, I am not coming back unless things change dramatically. I expected a play off push, I still expect a play off push and anything less is not good enough for me.

I think that we will turn it around quickly and be in the top half by xmas and push on after that. As for your last sentence , you are talking to the wrong person as i don't get the " i am not going unless we are good " attitude. Just my opinion everyone is entitled to do what they want.

If you can add a dollop or two of more attractive play I'll agree with you.

Nick, you do understand that its 3pts for a win, 1pt for a draw and no points if we lose?

How many games are we going to win? When do we start winning?

We can only drop 44 more points this season if we are to have any chance of pushing for 6th place. Each time we lose that reduces by three points.

By turning it around what do you mean? When will that start? How are we going to achieve that turnaround?

Look at AS press conference notes especially the bit where he says the players have to start taking responsibility on the pitch and not wait for him to do it at half time. DOH! whatever he did at half time on Friday DID NOT WORK!!! ffs

I don't think by bringing in someone now (Wenger/Fergueson or whoever) will guarantee the play offs this season or next. You have high expectations (nothing wrong with that) but you have to be realistic. Even before our crap start the POs were always going to be difficult to reach, the trap that 99% of clubs fall into is sacking their manager at the first opportunity only to find that whoever comes in does not do any better. You, me the club, need to look longer term (yes I know another 5 year plan!), as it is a building process. Unfortunately for clubs our size that is the way it is, but we have a lot of positives to be happy with, and I believe are generally heading in the right direction, albeit a little sideways at times.

Re the style of football is a different issue, and may come down to wanting either good football or results as a priority, needless to say when you don't get the good football and you lose it becaomes an issue. I for one thought I wanted good football but as I am getting older would settle for a result everytime, then my weekend would not be messed up, accept its not everyone's view.

Not sure about the selling of Forster tbh, but DJ had to go to save the club. Hence my point about the longer term view, and dare I say bigger picture.

Whilst expectations have been raised over the past 2-3 seasons, we need a reality check every now and again, I fear that is what we are in the middle of.

Andy Scott

Let’s look at the overall picture for this season, not just the league:

Total Games Played 12

Won 5
Lost 4
Drawn 3

That’s certainly not worth a Sacking, it’s not fantastic, but it’s not all doom and gloom, we have beaten a Prem team and a Championship team along the way, let us give him until Christmas at least to right things, we then have 23 games left for a new man to salvage our League 1 survival if need be.

I believe that a knee jerk reaction by getting rid of AS is not the way forward, the man deserves a chance for bringing us this far from the dark days of Butcher and Co, some of you have very short memories, if it wasn’t for AS we could have ended up in the Blue Square League.

For God’s sake give him a chance to change things, he’s done it before, lets now see what he’s made of.

I seriously hope that is not the answer he gives to MB if he rings him this afternoon!!!!

What we need is a cartoon of the fella out of Reginald Perrin who used to say

I did not get where I am today by...................

Bees fans could then fill in the quote.......

(I hope NorthamptonBee goes first)

Yes i am aware of how the League works  We are 7 points off the play offs so bit early to give up.

I think we have the manager in place to achieve what we want . We had so much play on Friday, AS can't stick it in the net for them. The general play is ok, we just need to convert possession into goals. We have stopped conceding that was the priority.

People don't seem to get the message - we have NO other options up front at the moment.

Cort is half fit and Forster is about to have an operation. Neither can play more than 20 minutes or so and Simpson is also still out, so Charlie and Alexander it will remain

Bet many wouldnt have predicted we would beat Hull City, Sheff Weds and Everton

but then again bet many didnt predict we would lose to Rochdale and Carlisle

i think rochdale are the best team we've played so far, maybe on a high from coming up but with the performance they put against us they might be a surprise this year,Carlisle were solid and organised at their place.for me Bristol Rovers was disappointing,Hartlepool was the same but a bit worse,Orient was atrocious, just simply appalling,no positives.in between we've shown signs of what we are capable of,the football played against Hull was something else,no smash and grab.Sheffield Wednesday we played very well, still feel it will come good, still early(ish)days.i think for what hes done for the club since he took over he's got to be given time,we'll see in a few weeks

This is a myth. It would never have happened that season because Wrexham and Mansfield were worse than rubbish. Chester City survived on the last day of the season by devine intervention, Grimsby were on a downward spiral, Accrington were never going to finsih above us.

Notts County, Lincoln City, Dagenham, Macclesfield and Shrewsbury all had seasons like ours and all finished below us.
Under AS we lost 9 games and won 13 drawing only 3.

Under Butcher we had won 5 lost 12 and drew 5 which gave us 20 points which was just under half the total points needed to escape relegation almost halfway through the season.

That is not a defence of Butcher or Dickens, we were a poor side with a poor budget.
This season can not be compared to that season unless our ambition is the same.
Wait til Xmas if we want to avoid relegation dogfight.
Act now if we want to build on Cup success and push for the playoffs.

I am still happy for AS to remain in charge but I want to see a change in tactics tomorrow night 4-5-1. I want to see the Lee thing put right. I want to see a midfileder recieving the ball to his feet from our defenders, our defenders receiving the ball from the keeper, possession kept not given away, maybe Saunders in centre midfield perhaps as a play maker in five rather than Bean who would be the obvious selection, Wood in on the left, Weston up top or left out, a clean sheet, at least 10 shots and at least 5 of them on target. I would ideally like to see 3pts nicked but will settle for a point backed up by wins against Charlton and Oldham.

Get Willock back double quick.

Andy Scott

Carlisle away first game of the season up front on his own I recall in a
4 - 5 - 1 formation.

Cort was up front with Weston and it was 4-4-2. Wood was on the left, Saunders on the right, with K'OC and I think Hunt in the middle.

Andy Scott

Yeah that's it lets sack our best manager we have had for a very long time for someone who's probably going to be worse and take even longer to build team chemistry. On tuesday it was we love Andy Scott he can't do anything wrong and now it's the death penalty. I suppose I should be used to how fickle us Brentford fans are.

Martin Allen and of course Sir Steve were better managers than Scotty.

Andy Scott

Martin Allen and of course Sir Steve were better managers than Scotty.

Hmmm what has Martin Allen achieved apart from getting to the playoffs with Brentford? Not exactly a stellar CV.

AS could turn out to be the best manager the club has ever had (i'll get stick for that hypothetical) but we cannot go saying that he isn't much cop just off a poor start to the season.

Andy Scott

It was beautiful to watch as Cort became conducter that day and the orchestra played sweet music all around him. Friday in Orient was somewhat different.

I stand corrected and must be thinking of another away game early last season.

Our next 12 games are
Brighton a Peterborough h Plymouth a
Charlton h Exeter a Colchester a
Oldham h Bournemouth h Notts County h
Tranmere a MK Dons h Southampton a

We need to take 21 points from these games to be in with a shout.
Can you see us achieving that target?

Andy Scott

What I would like to know from those who suggest canning AS now or within a couple of weeks is, realistically who they would replace him with and given the dictates of the transfer window, how they would change things given the current personnel.

I think the key point in the 500+ comments in this thread is that we all love the club and want it to prosper, are unhappy with the style of play, see no evidence of Plan B and think we are under-performing given the current resources and raised expectation levels.

Remember there is no guarantee that any new manager would turn things around or do anything better or differently.

I think that for many good reasons the current board have invested heavily into AS and bought into his approach and way of doing things.

That is not to say that things cannot change but change for change's sake is merely a knee jerk reaction.

There is also a massive sense of impatience here as if we have a God given right to succeed, and even some spoiled foot stamping. But that is not to say that we shouldn't be doing far better than we are.

I think there is a lot to admire about AS and to a degree if he listened to everything that is said or written here then he would never get anywhere.

He needs to be his own person but if it ain't working then he would be terribly stupid and be digging a massive hole for himself if he ploughs on down his lonely furrow without taking good advice from people he trusts - not yes men, and adapt what is going on.

I believe that the board would be loath to change managers midstream unless it goes totally tits up and AS shows no sign of amending matters and results do not pick up.

I would hope and expect that AS is thinking hard about what needs to be done and is actually trying to make the changes happen.

I hope and expect that no action will need to be taken and that this will be seen down the line as a mere blip, but an important one, that demonstrates that he is still learning (as we all are) and needs to make changes and also listen where necessary.

Nothing major can be done with the squad until January and IMO it is not until then that there should be any serious thoughts of a change of manager, and only then if we are seen to be drifting on with no changes to style, approach or results.

Exactly more or less what I said yesterday, but didn't expand as much as NLB.

Andy Scott

To be fair we've had a tough fixture list to start, carlisle, walsall, rochdale, hartlepool, leyton orient ,a daunting start. Thankfully it looks better ahead.

i dont think he should be sacked at all but those games listed are hardl dauting thats actually 11-15 points we should have got if went by last season! and we got a better side!

we will come through but needs to happen now, were dominating games but no finishing them off!

There was a similar thread prior to xmas last season. The half a dozen games looked pretty much like we would lucky to get 4 points and drags us right in the relgeation mire, however we took 16 points or more out of 21 and all of a sudden everyone was seeing a play off possibility. Funny old game.

Absolute rubbish. You are talking about a man who no one in the football league will touch with a barge pole.

Martin Allen took a club on the brink of relegation kept them up, got them to the PO twice and had two great cup runs. If MA had had AS's budget we would have gone up instead of Playoff failure IMO.

So far Scott has failed to get us going (early days i know) im not worried about the results as such atm. Im more worried about the one dimensional footy we play and that Scotty seems to think we are dominating games. We havent battered a team in the league this season (bar Sheff Wed which we only won 1-0) and we have lost comfortably in every game we have been defeated. Not once have Kev or Dave surged through the middle and had a shot, not once have the wingers cut inside and ruthlessly charged at goal, not once have we got the ball to GA's feet and allowed him to show us the quality he has, not once have we played a through ball or slid the ball in for Charlie to have a proper impact. If after the Tranny game we continue to play high balls to Weston and Simpson as our only attacking option and have Charlie and Gary playing as target men and Dave and Kev only playing sideways or backward passes then sadly i think it will be time to consider AS's future. Until then we have to stand by him, see you at Brighton.

if we take 16 from Brighton (a) Charlton (h) Oldham (h) Tranmere (a)

I'm not going to attack this part of your post because I could so easily go through each point and demolish each of them, it would just take me too much of my precious time to go through the highlights. We have put in some good performances this season and this team has it in them to go further, all the stuff you said- fine, we havent done enough of it. But to say that none of that stuff has happened even once what are you talking about??

Martin Allen took a club on the brink of relegation kept them up, got them to the PO twice and had two great cup runs. If MA had had AS's budget we would have gone up instead of Playoff failure IMO.

For a start what you have said about MA taking brentford up on the budget AS has is pure speculation, no more. Lets deal with facts shall we? Andy Scott took a team on the brink of relegation out of the professional league and led them to a respectable mid table finish.

Andy Scott then led us to promotion out of league 2 in his first full season. We then exceeded expectations by finishing 9th and outdid all of our previous season contemporaries (2 of whom went back down). We are currently in the middle of a 'great cup run'. When you look at what both managers have achieved in the same space of time, AS isn't that different really?

So to say that MA is a 'much better manager' is either disingenuous, just plain wrong, or far too early to say. Wouldnt you agree?

Andy Scott

People don't seem to get the message - we have NO other options up front at the moment.

Cort is half fit and Forster is about to have an operation. Neither can play more than 20 minutes or so and Simpson is also still out, so Charlie and Alexander it will remain

Why can we not sign new stikers on loan?
