Don't let facts get in the way of a good story!!

Guinan in 92 games for Cheltenham has scored 13 goals that 1 in 7.
Wheras Willock in his last 104 games over a similar period has scored 25 goals which is 1 in 4.
SO of their recent historic records who has the best scoring ratio?

And Fitz Jnr was 1 in 2 or 1 in 3 when we signed him wasn't it ?

And Fitz Jnr was 1 in 2 or 1 in 3 when we signed him wasn't it ?

No. He started on fire for Watford and scored 11 in his first 17 games. So if you look purely at his games since then he had a terrible scoring ratio. Somrthing like 1 in 12. :fishing:

Surely we can get a loan striker from a Premiershit or Championship club:confused:

Not my job matey:D

But Why is it that it seem most other clubs can sign players from Top clubs but we never manage it :(

And it can't all be about wages etc...

What clubs and how good have they been?

We have had 3 from Chelsea and all have been sh*te.

We had a recent one from Arsenal as well. Cost us a well into 6 figures that little experiment did. Darren Pratley as well. He was Premiership. Joe Keenan from Chelsea. That's 3 in two years.

I suppose you wanted someone like Sherringham, Harewood, Kanoute....etc, etc

If we're doing well mid-season we can get decent loans in. If in pre-season we have a decent squad and a manager who can persuade other clubs and their players that coming to us would help in their development we can get decent loans in. If we're down in the dumps with a manager who hasn't got a reputation we've got much less chance and will always come second to clubs who can offer more. As on top of that we will be going to clubs and asking them to foot much if not all of the wages of the player we are in a very weak position to get loanees in.

Based on what,

If I recall last time we were in the same position Adams guided us into the bottom tier coupled with the fact that he doesn't know a good player if he won't play Tabb!

Adams might be a decent prospect as a manager next season in L2...

Micky adams

No disrespect to Scott Fitzgerald but I think Micky Adams is a far more capable, experienced manager and could probably get that bit extra out of the shower we've got masquerading as professional footballers at the moment,as for taking us down he took over the team when the writing was already on the wall and arguably, (if it's possible) a worse team than we've got at the moment, (I seem to remember Graham Hogg as a centre half, who made a steamroller look like an express train), sadly the chances of Micky Adams coming back to Brentford are as remote as the mythical strikers that these misinformed, misguided, sad posters keep bombarding us with.:nono:

adams was on £150k a year with us and far more at coventry.... i very much doubt we are offering a six figure salary these days.

.................you get what you pay for.

Leroy on £75k or whatever then a similar amount to get rid of him. Then Scott F on what (£60-£70k ?). Perhaps we would have been better to have paid someone decent £100k in the first place. We'll probably have spent the best part of £175k on the First team manager by the time this seasons out. (and still have been relegated by Easter) Thats what you get for picking the cheapest option.

Fitzs is hopeful of a signing before the weekend, must be another defender or midfielder because he clearly isn't trying to sign a striker, even the bottom two teams in the second division have found out you need to score goals to get away from the bottom. Please Please Please Fitz's get a striker to give us hope.

This lad might have done a job for us up front if he had been played there instead of on the wing or in midfield.

I'm sure Fitz had someone else lined up though when he let him go though. Oh yes, another loanee who isn't a striker !!

Wrong priorities and time running out.

I saw Cox played up front in three or four games in a row without coming remotely close to scoring

Let's not have the same debate 24 hours later on a different thread, my comment was aimed at someone who suggested Fitz wasn't trying to sign a striker which is utter rubbish.

:imwith: Lot's of effort but a player for a different situation. He'll make it as a pro but I'd be very surprised if it was as a striker.

Why not, 24 hours closer to relegation and still no striker.

I don't believe Cox was played up front 3 or 4 times consecutively and I can also remember him having a couple of shots, something I don't remember Willock doing. Perhaps more relevent is that he wasn't given the opportunity to stay after we had strengthened other areas of the team which might have been expected to see more chances fall to the forwards with Keith and Leary in situ. He was released so we could bring other loanees in so Fitz has effectively released a striker to bring in more defenders when the priority is ...............err a striker.

Not suggesting Cox is the answer but he is closer to it than nothing at all.

I think you're double, if not treble-counting some of the same money. Let's assume the salary is £75k pa (your figure), and look approx Jul 06 to Jun 07. Leroy did about 5 months and may have got a 3 month pay-off (I don't know, but that seems to have been the assumption here) - 8 months = £50k. Fitz will do about 7 months, which comes to about £44k - total about £94k. If Leroy got a 6-month pay-off, add another £19k, but it's still well short of £175k. And we wouldn't have got candidates like Adams or Parkinson in the summer as they were in well-paid jobs then

The bootome 2 teams strikers signed are as follows:-
Stephen Cooke a player who could not get near the Bournemouth side and is actually a WINGER

Whilst Macclesfield have signed Jon Murphy a decent enough forward who has had lots of injuries in the past couple of years and has actually been on loan to Macclesfield since October. Hardly a new signing.

Whatever, but I'm fed up of hearing that we aren't a big enough catch and can't afford to appoint a decent manager and we can't attract any quality players as they don't want to play for us.

Its not as simple as that - scrimping on the Manager has proved to be a false economy and having made the mistake once, we then went and repeated it. It will end up costing us more in the long run than having got someone in with a better track record who would have cost more.

At the end of the day the whole thing boils down to the fact that we haven't got a pot to piss in and we can't go on for the next 5 years like that until Lionel Rd comes to fruition (if it ever does).

It isn't working (and by "IT" I mean the whole model we are owned and managed under) and maybe the penny for some will only finally drop when they read on Sky Sports that we are mathematically down. Football is a rich mans plaything in this country. It is sad that it is the case but the vast sums of money coming into the game for TV at the highest level make the stakes big and the knock on effect is felt all the way down the leagues. None of the various clubs who have tried fan ownership have succeeded at it and we are the latest who have failed - we just haven't admitted it yet, even to ourselves. You will be able to verify that by the replies to this shortly from BU people (along the "where is this billionaire coming from then" theme).

I for one won't be calling for Scott F to stay in the post after this season and I am baffled by the logic of those who think he has the qualifications, contacts and the experience to get us out of League 2. There is one way he will take us out of League 2 though but let's not risk that eh.

In the meantime, Yeovil is a game we MUST MUST win. How many of you have checked the table recently.

Yeovil v Brentford
Millwall v Rotherham
Orient v Blackpool
Bournemouth v Huddersfield

If 2 of the other 3 are home wins and we lose then we have to make up 10 points in 17 games having also played 1 or 2 games more.

The game is up at that stage and we may as well send all our loanees back and save the money.

So how many of you really think that getting a striker in today isn't vital !! Next week could be too late. If the recovery doesn't start tomorrow it doesn't start at all.

Today we probably have about a 10-15% chance of staying up. By tomorrow, it could be 1%.

With a striker not having been acquired in the first 17 days of the transfer window , the Fighting Chance money has been well and truly wasted. Those of you think time is on our side and we can leisurely pick one up on the 31st of Jan are the ones who are deluded.

Easy, why doesn't Fitz pop along to the bargain striker shop and look in the bargain bucket for Golden Oldies or Promising youngsters, stick him in his bag and start him tomorrow.

Don't you realise that he can only pitch Brentford to those that are on the market and he's starting at a disadvantage to most clubs as far less attractive proposition, money available to pay and far more expensive to live.

The likelihood of picking up exactly what we need i.e. a big, strong , quick, goalscorer is remote in all honesty although I'd be delighted if he could bring in someone who is an improvemnet on Willock. To be fair the donkeys who Leroy tried weren't and so far there's no-one out there that's been signed by clubs in the same predicament that I'd have welcomed anyway.

I agree it woudl be great to have a proven striker on board by tomorrow, could you name one we have missed out on?
Rotehrhame have jsut forked out £65K for a guy who has no record whatsoever, he may turn out great but then he has more chance that he won't. It is no good getting a player in just because he is a centre forward. Is that not the mistake Leroy made?
To be honest I'd rather we stopped shipping silly goals first, because that has cost too many points. In fact we hardly scored many under MA but because conceded fewer we won more games. A proven goalscorer we have not had (apart from about 6 weeks for DJ) for a few years. Even Deon Burton now wouldn't be the answer as he is not prolific scorer and we have been making quite few chances in games recently and need someone on the end of them more regularly. They however are not easy to come by as every club would like one.

If he can't find someone who is an improvement on Willock he can't be looking very hard. What exactly do we pay John Griffin for if he can't suggest anyone from non league that is better than that waste of effort. Oh yeh, forgot, he was Griffins spot in the first place !!

I don't believe Cox was played up front 3 or 4 times consecutively

Cox played up front against Doncaster, Tranmere, Port Vale, Carlisle and Millwall.

In a couple of those games he and Kuffour interchanged but he started up top with Willock or Moore.

I went to all those games, did you :fishing: and apart from a free-kick agaisnt Carlisle, which he could have taken playing anywhere on the pitch, and an effort against Doncaster he didn't look like scoring.

Let's be clear, no-one is suggesting we don't need a striker, it's obvious, although as Gee Bee said stopping conceding goals might also help, last clean sheet in the league was September
But some people are willing to accept that it is not easy to bring in teh sort of player that would make a difference.

You seem to be suggesting there is an abundance of players that would do a job for us. Yes we might find someone better than we have but I reckon it's very difficult to find someone who would score the goals to keep us up, you don't seem to accept this

Looking at the strikers who have moved to League One or Two clubs in the window for free or on loan, I wouldn't take many, if any of them

L2 promotion with Brighton, building the team that then won the L1 Championship (he left in October of that season though). Then went to Leicester under Dave Bassett, couldn't avoid relegation but took them back up to the Premiership the following season.

That said, he took over the Bees when we were in a better position than Fitz inherited (4 wins and he had us from October). We were at least only relegated on the final day and several of the young players he brought in formed the spine of the Brighton team that he built (Oatway, Cullip, Watson). I don't think it would have been fanciful to think that had he stayed with us and BFC been taken over by someone less willing to splash cash we didn't have that he could have done with us what he did with Brighton- at least we might have got Zamora rather than Pinamonte.

nonsense man, how can you compare the two, just because we picked DJ up is no guarantee that other non-league strikers are any good. Too many people see some hod carrier or milkmen banging them in for sadnonleaguegroundhoppers F.C and think he is the next Alan Shearer, any decent striker in the Conference goes for £100K (McLean), so again, out of our league.
You seem to be totally oblivious to the fact that players we are trying to sign are turning us down, Fitz is doing the groundwork but his hands are tied somewhat

If its so easy tell me who in the past week who is a centre forward that has joined a club in the lower half of league one on a free or loan that is proven as better than Willock.
Also someone who might be better than Willock, might still not be good enough. We need someone who is proven to score goals at this level or above over a period of time. Someone in fact MUCH better than Willock, they though are NOT available and any that might become available are unlikely to want to put their necks on the line for a relegtion battle.
If it was so easy every club would have one.

Exactly,

People are banging on about get out there and find them from non league but don't realise that if they ahve any pedigree they cost money...Kightly, McLean, Boyd all over £100K + wages.

Last close season we picked up a proven goalscorer at that level in Moore and he isn't what we need yet and may never be. Luke Rodgers isn't what we really need but has scored goals, he cost £30K + long contrcat and didn't want to move too far south, Cheltenham have signed that pony Connor who is only a sub for Orient for £25K for god knows how long.

We have to face facts, what we want i.e. a fit, proven goalscorer at our level we can't afford and so whatever we get will be a gamble and I'd rather Fitz carried on looking rather than signing up the first available to appease fans only for them to turn on him a week later when not up to the job.

Unfortunately what we are probably going to end up with if we buy a striker is someone from further down the non league ladder who has showed promise but is a punt or a loanee but they appear few and far between with everyone trying to get hold of Barnard.

I'm just praying that somewhere out there some divine intervention occurs and Fitz manages to unearth a gem like DJ who starts scoring the minute he joins.

We can all dream
