General Cricket Thread

Getting uncomfortable for MV now. From the Beeb:

About 5 years ago,Lancashire U.12s played Cheshire U.12s. One Lancs boy scored an outstanding century.This is a fairly rare occurence as an innings is 40 overs.Michael Vaughan was there in his capacity as a proud father...his son plays for Cheshire.At the end of the match M.V. made a point of coming over to congratulate the Lancs lad and was extremely complimentary.The boy is of Indian heritage and was thrilled.Not the actions of a racist.
I've been involved with cricket at School,Club,District and County level for 40 years.During that time I've seen many 100s of matches,many 1000s of young players,met coaches/managers/administrators all over the country,been on about 50 tours,home and abroad.I cannot remember ever seeing or hearing any examples of discrimination or racism.This is junior level so can only speak of what I know.There have obviously been failings in places and with some people higher up the age groups and at pro level but I think that is down to a lack of leadership.Generally,I believe cricket is the least racist sport .

Not racism but there was always stereotypes. Black lads had to be fast bowlers. Asian lads had to bowl spin, that kind of thing. Ignorance really. I can see how for a lot of black or Asian cricketers a shire club might feel a slightly unwelcome place. I can't think of any black players in my son's leagues sadly, plenty of Asian lads and lasses though.

I will politely decline any invite to this threads Christmas party, hope you have a great night but I doubt it

Not too sure about that. EVERY sport will have the same issues and problems IMO from discrimination through to racism.

I’m not here on this thread for an argument with you. I’d prefer we debated this out on what should be done going forward.

If you watched or listened to Rafiq’s testimony this morning I’m pretty sure you’d be more inclined to think it worse than ignorance. Racial stereotype = racism.

I rarely recall a big black bloke who wasn't a fast bowler like his cricketing idols.

Asian players weren't fast bowlers.

Nobody was forcing them to do something they didn't want to do, it was amateur cricketers doing what their role models did. Ignorance was in coaches not exploring options. There was no malevolence, we were just enjoying some cricket.

The interesting thing about MV is that there are several tweets by him that would make it a possibility that he did used racist language.
How often have we seen the “I’ve got black mates” as an defence. My personal theory is it is about conformity. If someone conforms to your own boundaries of acceptability, then it’s all good. The issue is, it’s not about others confirming to your views as opposed to accepting people for who they are.
Ultimately, it’s not about MV. It’s as Martin Luther King said; “it’s not the actions of your enemies but the silence of your friends”.

I just watched Azeem Rafiq's interview on the BBC Sport App. I think he is a brave and inspirational individual, hopefully his experiences can drive positive change in the sport and in society in general.

It’s growing legs, another article from 11 years ago when he was dropped by the U19 England side for going on the lash on a match night.
He tweeted that the coach who dropped him was a wa**er so he sounds like a vile little gobshite and not such a victim as he’s painted.

Nobody justifies what he did and he deserves to get the same punishments as the people who abused him.

However, that doesn't in anyway justify what happened to him.

Racism needs to be exposed and got rid of.

If hes guilty of it himself he should be held accountable but i dont see any reason why he should keep quite about other peoples behaviour.

Agreed, if you were a shoplifter in your youth would you keep quiet if somebody broke into your house stole everything you owned?

Of course not, you'd report it and whatever Rafiq has done he was absolutely right to report his experiences.

I'm 100% against racism and sexism and most other isms however i do believe there should be a time limit on complaints and legal cases or even newspaper slurs from many , many years ago... we behaved differently in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

As kids or teenagers many of us went to see circuses with wild animals (i was at school with John Chipperfield of Chipperfield's Circus in W6 and we are still facebook friends) and mum took us to the Black and White Minstrels at the Victoria Palace theatre . Both uncool today but we must accept times have changed.

We cannot dig too far back.

However his claims that he felt bullied, alienated and helpless carry a lot less weight given that he was no shrinking violet, posting obscenities and comfortable enough to trade racist banter himself.

Why do they carry less weight its entirely possible that he felt exactly that way and lots of people have admitted he was.

Him doing the same make him as bad as them but it doesnt mean his claims arent valid.

Where did I say it justifies anything ffs. He hates Jews but cries about people calling him names, perhaps he should think carefully about his own behaviour.

Rafiq’s racism was from 2010 so hardly going back into Love Thy Neighbour territory.

In this case, considering his age at the time, the time that has passed and the nature of the apology (which appears to have been widely accepted as very sincere) if he were still playing I would think the punishment should be similar to that of Olly Robinson.

In summary: Rafiq used a horrible anti Semitic trope and should be held accountable for it. That it no way should reduce the impact of the vile racism he has been the victim of and the sh*t show served up by Yorkshire over the last 10 days.

Of course it doesnt and rightly so.

But what it does is show him out for also being a **** who was happy to post discriminatory/racist slurs.

Makes him look very silly in that respect.

Yorkshire etc need sorting out........................................... But hes no angel by the look of things.

It wasn't just names though was it? What he did was wrong and we all agree on that but it has nothing to do with what happened to him, so why say he shouldnt say anything or state that he cries about people calling him names?

I agree, I just pointed out that he was guilty of similar himself so unsure how intimidated he really felt.
Still wrong even if he was a strong, fearless, cocky teenager but less sympathy than I had before for him as an individual.
Gary Ballance may be a racist but it calls into question whether Rafiq was happy to be part of it at the time and only in hindsight has decided to blow the whistle. He no longer seems to be a downtrodden minority he implied but no one at YCC comes out with any credit

Its a fair point. I think intimadiation is always something that no one but the person them selves can understand how they felt.

Its clear that there was a sustained attack on him and some of them were absolutely abhorent.

I would say that given others have backed him up that he was treated quite badly.

Agree 100%, not questioning the shameful culture at YCC, the victim is someone I now feel a lot less sympathy for than before. As I read the reports from last week I started imagining a young, impressionable, humble, talented, English cricketer of Asian descent who was a victim of tantamount to bullying and now I’ve changed my mind completely.
No defence of the club involved

Relating to these latest revelations of stuff Rafiq did, pots, kettles and b***k spring to mind. Alternatively, what goes around, comes around... .
Not condoning anything that happened to him in any way, though.
