Hopefully the clear out of mates of mates has done the job?

Fresh faces, new ideas, new strategies and, hopefully, better players to blood…. ?

To be honest who is out there that is an outstanding candidate - I don't see anyone at the moment
I don't think it matters who is in charge it is the way County Cricket is arranged in this Country, which is always going to be a problem as there is such a small window in the Summer to arrange too much Cricket, not helped by the money making monstrosity that is The Hundred, which does nothing for real cricket fans.
Drop this.
Play the four day game throughout the Summer so that batsmen and bowlers get to play in different conditions.
The way things are at the moment nothing will change, and England will continue to sit at the bottom of the Test Rankings.

Unfortunately the T20 Blast and Hundred are the ECB's cash cow so they won't be removed from the schedule when County Championship games get 1 man and his dog in attendance.

I'm quite happy with the T20, as I can still support Middlesex, but the Hundred means nothing to me.

Didn’t he retire or miss loads of tests because of going through a divorce now you mention it. Was quite unusual in those days for anything apart from injury to at least be the official reason. Quality batsman.

Jason Gillespie ticks all the boxes for me but whether he is prepared to leave living in Australia is another question. Ponting would be another shout and Stephen Fleming whom is doing wonders for NZ is one that is destined for higher things but would take a lucrative offer.

Let's wait to see who they bring in first.

I see Alex Stewart is a name being discussed a lot, well respected, capable of dealing with the suits and has experience with Surrey. Would work well with Strauss

Agreed, he has been the obvious choice for a few years but it hasn't happened yet so you have to wonder if it ever will.

No doubt it will be some public school bootlicker who won't cause any fuss though.

It is really important that for test match cricket to survive we have a thriving England test team. I really hope England get this appointment right. Let’s see whom they appoint. If it is one appointment for the boys then traditional test cricket as we know it will suffer. Not sure I said this on this thread but having Kohli no longer as the test captain for India is a huge blow.

India v England U19 World Cup Final this Saturday :)
Are you ready for this?
A bit of a problem though with rugby, Gillette soccer Saturday, various FA cup games and Burnley v Watford.
How will I cope?

Justin Langer now available, too intense & grumpy for some of the Aussie squad!

145-7, a recovery of sorts.

England 189 all out. A great recovery in the circumstances.

India 5-1 after 3 in reply.

England 61-6 at the moment. Can’t see them recovering this I’m afraid.
I haven’t seen the game today but just noticed India won. From what I have watched of this tournament India have been the most impressive side (honestly not being biased) although there is one South African player that really looked the real deal. I can’t remember his name. No surprise Raj Bawa got MOM - he is a name to remember. For England fans there are 2/3 players that really could make it over time with good coaching to the test team.

He was the coach for winning the T20 but let’s be honest Australia really are not the best T20 side out there and he won a recent ashes series. Let’s face it Australia were against a poor England side. Look at his overall record whilst in charge. Not that impressive.

Well done India but ..........
A sports depressing day for one and all ( well most)
Brentford lost and most importantly still have all the mistakes in them
England lost the rugby again pressing the self destruct button
England U19 lost the cricket

They got over the line impressively. Nishant batted very impressively and never looked in trouble. England haven’t won this trophy since 1998. India have won 5 times. That says a lot about the development process of the two countries.

Englands Ahmed was impressive. One to watch.

South African player is Daniel Brevis (sp?) who was exceptional with the bat. The SL captain also did well with bat and bowl

Was impressive in the semi finals. Let’s see how England manage him over time. England need a quality spinner.

Yes thank you. Watched some earlier games and looked the real deal. Really impressed me.

We all know any natural flair or ability will be beaten out of him by the robots that demand all of our players are identical

It be interesting to see how England handle him. I would put him in the England A tours immediately and hopefully he can get some matches in the sub continent to develop him further. His big hurdle is that the county championship is not set up for spinners to bowler in July and August.

Good choice as a stop gap. A gritty player that will ease the transition and get respect from the players. Had a test batting average of over 40 and still remember his 200 against Australia.

2007 since England last had a test series without one of these playing.

That is one hell of a record. Be interesting to see who has made this decision. I would fully expect Root must have been part of any decision making in this.

I can’t believe I am writing this as for me he is by far the best Indian batsmen ever in all formats but how close is Kolhi to being dropped? ? another duck today.

Woah. Liam Livingstone has just become rich. The amount he has been sold for at the IPL auction is staggering. Think the 4th highest ever Englishman to be sold.

Interesting first day of the Test Match between New Zealand and South Africa.

Seven wickets for Matt Henry, as SA were bowled out for 95
