Important test series happening between NZ and Australia in terms of the WTC. Australia very much on top after a superb innings by Cameron Green

Marnus Labushange who has been sh*t for a while now (except the World Cup final) average is now below 50. In fact out of all the current playing players who has played 25 tests or more only Smith and Williamson has an average over 50. Although Williamson average is misleading as against all the big three (Australia, India and England) his average is below 40.

Looking forwards to falling asleep in front of this tonight in the same way I did last night. ?

But NOW all change again

New Zealand's Glenn Phillips ripped through Australia with five wickets as the hosts were set a target of 369 to win the first Test in Wellington.

Rachin Ravindra (56 not out) and Daryl Mitchell (12 not out) dug in before stumps on day three to leave the Black Caps on 111-3.

Phillips finished with 5-45 as Australia were all out for 164.

30 days until the County Championship begins
I used to play minor country cricket in my younger days and used to hate fielding in the covers in the early part of the season. Thank goodness for hand warmers in the pocket's!

Marais Erasmus officiating in his final match tonight in the NZ V Aus test. Always found him to be a very fair umpire - got some decisions wrong but the majority right andwas one of the better ones on the circuit. Still remember one test match a couple of years ago between SA and India, his shock when DRS tracked a ball over the stumps in a ground he used to play in SA and he just smiled and shook his head. You could sense he knew it was not going over.

Terrible umpire. Good riddance.

Just catching up on the NZ v Australia score - NZ must fancy their chances needed 6 wickets with Australia still needing over 200 runs to win.

I see that Smith was out LBW and reviewed (again). There was a time he never got out to lbw but now has for the 23rd time in his last 46 test innings.

Looks to be a great Test Match

Could Travis Head and Mitch Marsh pull it off ??

Smith opening experiment is not going well is it
One can never write off Australia. But this test match is crucial for the WTC table.

Great finish brewing.

Australia must be the favourites needing 109 to win with five wickets left.

Marsh and Carey both have unbeaten fifties.

Kudos to the Aussies. Cummins should be regarded as an all rounder. Amazing last 12 months he has had.

I enjoyed my time playing for Berkshire and ended up playing with and against very talented guys who went on to play county cricket and even a few games for England
Maybe you can answer this @Ashbee or @SpiderBee, how does Minor Counties work nowdays. I was looking into Berkshire for instance and they only seem to have played a couple games a year now. Is the Minor Counties championship still in existence, or am I completely missing it. Having recently moved to Datchet, I was hoping to take in a few games of my new county, but found it very difficult to even find where they play?

Same as me @Gary Alen as I have moved to Swindon and was hoping to see more of Wiltshire minor county. It appears that they have four group 20/20 games, fiver 50 over games and four three day games . A big change from Minor Counties cricket league days. They are playing Glamorgan in a Showcase game at Swindon cc alongside the football ground in July.

Think Berkshire now play out near Newbury CC. In my day in the 90s it was mainly at Reading CC.

There are fixtures on the National Counties Cricket Association web site. Berkshire play there 3 days games in West Div 1

I know the Counties play a warm up game end of July ready for the 50 over Royal London Cup vs a Minor County

Surrey played a couple of years ago at High Wycombe v Bucks

Only three teams in Test history had scored more runs after the fall of the fifth wicket in a successful fourth-innings chase.

They were 80 for 5 chasing 279 !!

I've asked a Aussie colleague who normally is very good at trolling people why this might be. I asked him on Tuesday, yet to get a response

Australia are not willing tourists, unless its against the other "bigger nations." There was a radio programme on the BBC World Service that suggested the Australian Cricket Board only see the smaller nations as an inconvenience and only wish to play them at home as the chance of a slip-up is less likely then.

You could say the same about England and India too, but you do feel that they at least try and support a number of the smaller nations. It was suggested that because of Covid, each of the 3 "bigger nations" were unofficially assigned a couple of smaller nations that they were to help & support. England took under their wing Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands and West Indies, India were assigned Nepal, Afghanistan & Bangladesh. While Australia refused to take anybody under their wing. The ICC hoped it would be Papua New Guinea, Namibia and Zimbabwe. Now whether that is true, will probably never know, but when you look at the random games that England have played against the West Indies in particular, it seems possible.

When you look at the last times Australia toured some countries for test matches, it is quite surprising:
South Africa 17/18
Bangladesh 17
New Zealand 15/16 - before the recent test series this year
West indies 15
Since Australia last toured the West Indies, Australia have toured England 3 times.

Australia haven't played a test against Afghanistan or Ireland and last played Zimbabwe (in Zimbabwe) in a test in 1999. That said, England haven't played a test in Zimbabwe since 1996!! Many of the smaller nations have limited budgets, and so Australia, India and England can help bankroll them and help them to grow. I read somewhere that the Sri Lankan Cricket board said a successful home test series with England can pay for the board and team for the next 3/4 years cycle. Much the same can be said of India and Australia.

Obviously Covid hasn't helped matters, but the World Test Championship was supposed to remove these oddities. The World Service Programme suggested that of all the 3 bigger nations, the Australian Board are the first to find an excuse to limit these inconveniences.

Well least it’s just the cricket that has been troubling!

Unlike this tour.

Note now long it was too .

Death, disaster and redemption - England's tumultuous tour of India
Thanks for sharing

The death of the long tour is one of the sad things about the changes in test cricket - too many games and formats happening around the world now to allow it.

I think the many tour games were almost like the Lion in rugby at one point - you got a band of players together and learnt the local conditions over weeks or even months. Australia's Invincibles in 1948 played something like 27 first class games on top of 5 tests - obviously that would never happen now but even in recent memory 5+ matches was all part of the tour.

In recent times a token game against some representative XI or one county's fringe players was normal and even that seems to have been replaced by nothing at all.

England using the mid-tour weekend off to go back to Abu Dhabi for a net session and some golf is about away as you can get from a traditional tour.

The days when the Indians and Pakistanis would start their tours with a game at Indian Gymkhana cc in Osterley, they must have been magnificent events.

Middlesex being the only team to beat the West Indies in 1976 (?)) in a three day game and also beat Pontings Australia in a one dayer , great to be there for both.

Jim @difford has a great story about taking wasim ( I think) to open a Ladbroke in Southall ?. Not sure that would happen now. I will let jim tell that one.

Wasn't there a tradition about Australia starting their tours in Arundel? They certainly did in 2005.
There must be some great stories associated with those games - world famous players in a setting you might associate with low key county games or somewhere even more obscure. Thanks for sharing the above!

Touring teams played in some weird and wonderful places. The 48 Aussie side played a game at East Molesey CC for example.

Yes they certainly did play there but I am not sure if it where it was where they started their tours. Certainly the opening first class match used to be at new road Worcester which was considered the best wicket around at the time.

now it is always under water!!

I used to have the Wisden from 1949 recalling their incredible tour, scoring over 700 in a day ? against Essex, they may have been at Southend.

The 1961(?) Aussies played against a Club Cricket Conference side of very good club players in a one dayer including 2 Brentham players and the CCC beat them!!

Ahhhh.... the day with Wasim!

It seemed a great idea to book him instead of the usual Johnny Francombe or Derek Thompson, but who knew the ball tampering scandal would break the day before! Driving to six different addresses that morning to track him down with his agent, Jonathon Barnett as I recall, citing that he would definitely be at the next one each time, before finally tracking him down at a flat in Maida Vale.
Some of the stuff I found out during that drive!!!!! Police threatened to close the shop unless we could control the masses outside waiting for him spilling onto Uxbridge Road. He was great value though and warmed in the journey, kindly adding the entire squad's autographs to the bat he brought along to raffle!

Biggest cricketing T20 league in the world starts today. I have a love hate relationship with the IPL. Loved it when it first started and then got a bit sour but kinda looking forward to this season - with the exception of listening to Steve Smith commentating. Will be on Sky whose preference is spending money on this tournament rather than England away tests but hey ho :)
