Not that many rue the day like this. Most professional players are just that, professionals. Unlike fans this is their job. So they don’t love simply playing in the way we love watching. Iirc Ben Burgess, who had a decent career, did well for us and likes us enough to come and commentate, has also said he hated pretty much every day of his playing career.

Of course they are massively driven, it’s impossible to get to being a top pro otherwise. And of course they love to get the trophies. But £10-20m extra and being able to say they’d played for one of the biggest clubs in the world will mean more to most players than having been a hero for a leas famous club. There are exceptions but they are relatively few. There’s a reason KO’C is so respected and that people remember Steve Bull. The many dozens of men who played alongside them also made moves to improve their careers and didn’t just stick. The fact that many on here are counting down the days of Sergi’s BFC career when he really does seem to love it shows the loyalty is rarely repaid as we’re as mercenary about what’s best as players are.

Yes your right, I was speaking with my heart and not my head. It does seem strange that your doing a job. Few players are just stay with one club these days. But as the old adage states. Money talks.
Maybe on a smaller scale we do exactly the same to other club further down the food chain. The bigger fish with money, and the possibility of winning some silverware it better than being with a team that struggles for survival.

Still the song "We want you to stay, we want you to stay, Ivan Toney we want you to stay".

So reject the £1000's they all want to pay you each week. Not to likely, and I suppose we can't blame him.

Conspiracy theory :

IT's agent has been quietly sounding out interest from contacts at possible clubs.

Several have probably said "no interest".

However those mentioned in The Mirror piece have asked go be kept in the loop or have said they might be interested. All ifs and maybes.

Agent or agent's intermediary has leaked this to The Mirror.

(I know nothing - purely my theory on a hot sleepless night?)

One thing we know is that a number of our key players will be linked to clubs that we are due to play during the transfer window. Funny how that happens?

I don’t think he will go this season.
Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I’ll ask .. would Ivan have a release cause amount in his contract or do they not have those in the prem?

I don’t think we’ve agreed release clauses since Odubajo went for relative buttons.

I think we need to quantify 'stupid money'.

I guessing £50m+ is stupid, while anything north of £60m is effing ridiculous. But where does £40m sit - slightly silly?

I would think the fee would have to be a big one for that too happen.
Not sure IT is worth that kind of dosh though.

Sorry but that's utter tosh IMHO.
He is brilliant, first on the team sheet every week and easily the second best striker we've ever had in my lifetime.
He's also absolutely pivotal to how we play and we've been exceedingly fortunate that he's been virtually ever-present and in form for two seasons now (since he got up and running). Safe to say that without him we wouldn't be where we are today and would have to completely change how we play.

Having said all that I personally thought at the tail end of last season he was beginning to look a little jaded/disinterested and didn't seem as up for it.
Whether he was burnt out or the constant pressure of being 'the one' I don't know but hopefully he'll be re-charged and up for it when the season starts.
I appreciate it's all 'tw*t-face' bo11ocks but I personally think he is exactly what Man Utd need in their re-build.
Of course Ivan'd jump at it (who wouldn't?); loads of money, instant world fame and adulation and in the England squad for the WC.
And of course they can afford the £50/£60 million but I just don't think he's the type of marquee signing they go for these days.

Thankfully, for us, I just don't think it will happen.

Couldn't agree more with this. Many fans are so quick to turn on a player after a few average performances (e.g. Sergi), regardless of their attitude/ effort/ years of service. So how can anyone blame players for wanting to better themselves elsewhere?
