A £50mill plus bid and replaced with a quicker, more nimble striker would be feasible
Quick and nimble doesn't generally equal a player who can hold up or flick on the ball like Toney. Thus we'd lose that option from the tactics locker.

Ivan Toney

£30m minus what we paid (£7m?) plus the sell on to Posh (10%) would mean making £20m on IT so less than the Watkins or Benny deals in a higher division!

Ivan Toney

I don’t think you need him to improve much… he’s a high quality finisher who works his arse off every game, has the vision to play in his teammates, and has a 100% penalty record.

Give him more chances and he’ll score more goals.

Ivan Toney

£50m would not be unreasonable.
£50-60m is about where I'd put him, almost double that quoted figure.

We were being linked with Dolberg not long ago, although I think he's currently injured, I'd take £50-60m on Ivan and £20m on Dolberg.

Ivan Toney

I think we need to remember we are a selling club and will be for the foreseable future. Every player is for sale at the right price, one that matches our valuation.

IMO £30m is too low, I'm not sure where the press are getting that figure from, probably thin air.

Ivan Toney

We transferred Hogan, Gray, Watkins, Benrahma, and each time we said how are we going to replace those goalscorers.
‘Particularly with the last two, we thought we might have lost our strike force to get us to the PL… and then what happened!!!

If Toney goes, I am sure that the club is already one step ahead of that possibility.
The plan is always rolling forward, not just for the next few games, but for the longer term!

Out there, there is some unknown player, who is scoring goals for fun in some below the radar club, and down the line we’ll all be singing his praises in due course.
Plus, Toney and most of the current squad will not still be here within a relatively short period of time, so it’s just a matter of modern football life.

The club evolves and new players come in to put on the red and white. Some stay for 3 or 4 years, some for just a season.

I‘ve lost count of how many players I’ve seen play for us over the decades. Must be in the many hundreds, probably about 750.
They all left for one reason or another, but the club is still here.

I was more worried when we lost our twin strike force of Towers and Francis, who scored over 250 goals between them!
No one in the modern era comes even close to that!

Whoever our next striker is, he’ll be here for 3 years max, and then be gone.
With respect we were relegated not long after Towers and Francis left.

Ivan Toney

No disrespect to Ivan .. but really?
With Manchester United’s wealth and their aim to win the PL, I would have thought they would be looking for a bigger name than Ivan Toney whose not even an international yet.
As for Leeds .. don’t make laugh!
Just because you have a "Bigger name" don't mean you're a better player, Ivan Toney has already shown what he's about in the Championship and now the Premier league, And I suspect there's more to come from him.

Ivan Toney

I would guess this all about Toney’s agent. Been on holiday met a few other players, talked contracts Ivan has decided he wants a new, better contract. What better way to try and get it ?

They bought Dion Dublin the first season they won the PL so Ivan is a big enough name for them!

Ivan Toney

Not a chance of that. We’d spend anything we receive.

not disputing that, but the set up of our team, he is absolutely crucial to it. Picking up replacements to step straight in to the PL isn’t easy as we know

Having joined GPG a year ago in March, after a lifetime supporting us, and having enjoyed reading it every day of my retirement, I still don’t understand the logic of how it’s supposed to work. Ergo,
GPG is open to all comers Bees and non-Bees;
we know that Smartodds and other switched on organisations scan fan sites for value added insights;
yet on one small rumour from the Sun/Mirror is all it takes to trigger a tsunami of angst of our innermost thoughts on our most precious striker, and everything else he has brought to our team.
Welcome to the internet. ?

You'll know, from previous reading, that one of the primary functions of the GPG is to sell off any player who starts to look good. One decent game and a couple of goals and our striker is on the market immediately.

This tendency is accelerated by any usual media BS that Club big X is "looking at", "monitoring" or "thinking about" said player. Forgetting completely that our own recruitment and scouting is probably doing the same things with about 1,000 players at any one time.

It's always best to pop the threads on ignore until they die a natural death which, generally, end up with a trip down memory lane... and the reference to Jim Towers on this one is a good indicator.

Ivan Toney

That’s why I was worried when they left!

Even more so because they were seemingly forced to go to that ‘club down the road’ as PG rightfully calls them.

Most, if not all, top players nowadays, Toney included, will leave because they want to.

Ivan Toney

This is clearly a case of we need to fill media space with a Brentford player and the only one they have heard of is Toney.
It’s basic clickonomics. The baiters (sorry, journalists) are after maximum clicks. Goalscorers (“G”) will generate most interest and the “Big“ clubs (“B”) have the widest audience, ergo G+B=C (maximum click bait).

Man City, Liverpool, Spurs and Arsenal have done their CF business, so expect Man U, Newcastle and West Ham to be linked every day till the window closes. Only Wilfried Zaha scored more goals than Ivan of players that might conceivably be sold this summer, so our man’s prime bait.

I get what you mean. Yet, if fan forums only responded to ‘genuine’ transfer gossip, they’d be far quieter. Plus, whilst the newspaper article might hold no value, you never know what the source of the rumour was. Perhaps an agent ‘leaking’ details to encourage an upgrade in their client’s contract? Plus, by responding to any and all rumours, it’s a chance for fans to discuss their views on the players involved

Ivan Toney

We'll see I guess. Maybe the attitude has changed. I certainly won't blame MB for cashing that in but I'd like to think we'll hold on.
Hold on until when, when s contract expires? We had same with Gray, Hogan, Maupay & Watkins. Loads saying we shouldn’t sell, we did and we strengthened. It’s not easy, but the alternative is to let a player leave for nothing,
Personally I don’t expect him to go yet, but prove himself further this coming season. His next contract will be important for his career and life.

Ivan Toney

It would be even more important than usual for us to have a replacement lined up to let Toney go. That being said I still think it would take 50 mil for that to happen. He seems content in all the preseason footage thus far and I agree that I think he’ll be with us for another season at least. If he had an extra yard of pace, I think offers and clubs would come in that we wouldn’t be able to resist.

Eh? Where did anyone say let his contract expire?

All most are saying is that leaving now, with a couple of weeks before the season starts, would weaken the team, but that if our valuation (or in excess of that) is reached he's off. It would not leave us time to get a decent replacement in.

We all know Ivan is not here for the long haul, but he'll go when we are ready and have already got his successor in place, or at the very least, lined up.

I do agree with you that he owes us another season and it will be interesting to see if he can score more goals with the KLP and Wissa at his best helping supply him.

Ivan Toney

Could we have an outgoing classification please? Eg OG Rumour/Strong Rumour etc. Same as incoming.
It is a great idea. We could replace the 'speculation' in 'outgoing speculation' with the same terminology as incoming news. Hopefully, this is just an 'outgoing tenous link'. It would lessen my shock every time the outgoing Nørgaard post is bumped ?

t I think Ivan has found his level....he doesn't look to have bags of improvement in him imo.

He probably has earned a shot but if I were a United fan I'd be wanting/hoping for better ?

Ivan has been fabulous for us and I am happy for him to stay equally I'd be happy for us to take a large sum and leave it to the recruitment team to make us better still.
That sums it up quite nicely.

Ivan Toney

3 big defenders plus Ivan meant we didn't concede to any? corners, last season. With the state of our big blokes at the mo, we need to keep him.
Again, all the same reasons other people want to spend a fortune buying him, incidentally if he joins Man unt I bet he is in the England squad for the WC
I don’t think Toney will go this season. I think he will go next summer. He knows that if he performs incredibly well, he could get a big offer from a big club. The question is: go with Wissa/Halil up top or bring in another big ‘un.
Not a cat hell in chance Toney goes and we stick with halil, we will have the next one lined up.
I’d sell him for £50m and re-sign Watkins!

That's not going to happen and I can't see anybody paying 50m for Toney ?

Toney would easily go for a minimum of 50m, look at the market for goodness sake, any old cobblers goes for 50m, Ollie went for 35 and he hadn’t scored 14 pl goals ,

As for OW coming back, you missed the smillie and the rod, a proven PL goal scorer and full England international with 2 goals in 2 games isn’t going to be signed with the change from a Toney sale, his salary alone is probably already double IT’s and they will want 100m for him.

Those that say we should hold on, don’t then expand into how long? That’s the point. I’d take a guess that we are looking to extend his contract now that enhances his personal status and value.

Generally agree. The more plausible Villa target might be Ings who they seem to want to offload but his wages will also be silly even if they’d bear a loss on the £25m they paid for him and we would buy a 29 year old with limited resale value (ie no, no, no but decent proven player if we’re really going to want a target man who’ll be ready on day one).

Ivan Toney

Don’t underestimate his confidence and leadership. That spreads round the squad and helps others. Very different to other goalscorers we’ve sold. Never mind how hard he works defensively also. Big player for us. Was secretly glad he had a quiet end to the season as I thought it would make top 6 ignore him.

I doubt IT would sign a new contract with us now any more than CE would have signed a new one with us. He is a hot commodity, him, his agent and the pl knows it. I hope we get another year before he goes.

Ings, I rate him and he would score a shed load for us, but the chances of us signing him are zero. It would be an utter fortune with no sell on for somebody no better than wissa who we picked up for a song. And Wissa 6 years younger and with more potential and will go further.

IT’s replacement with be Unknown to us at this moment,

I agree- I suggested Ings last summer and the consensus was no on the basis of cost so the position is unlikely to have changed to be more favourable. Part of the fun is in how we find less obvious targets anyway.

I reckon with the £50m quoted we could easily replace the goals and assists. It is the bits that you mention that are more difficult.

KLP, Mudryk? and a striker could comfortably take care of 17 goal contributions.

We could then have the option to really upgrade our squad if we keep to the spending levels we seem to be at.

Either way I'm comfortable with what happens but I get way too excited at what business we could do when reinvesting these bonkers sums ?

Ivan Toney

“Keeping tabs on “ and similar statements mean nothing. Every PL club is “ keeping tabs” on 1000 plus players, 99% of whom they will never buy.
