Luis Suarez

I find it quite funny.

I don't particularly like Evra and have no real view on Suarez. He obviously feels there was a miscarriage of justice and a handshake isn't going to put it right.

I liked the first minute where Evra and Ferdinand both went for him and he got out the way leaving Evra to clatter into Ferdinand.

The sooner Prem players get Equity cards the better. It is all a soap opera.

Luis Suarez

Good post and it would stop people wetting themselves over something which is of so little consequence

Well I don't mean that they should just get on with it, Suarez is obviously scum. Everyone rightly criticised Blatter for saying players should just shake hands after an incident and get on with it, yet the whole "line up and shake hands" thing certainly didn't help matters today.

It's entertaining for sure, the media love it and I wish I had just a little of these peoples money. It amazes me that its alright to blow us a battleship, which hasn't moved for six months with all the accompanying innocent deaths and is shown by space age computer technology with the people who drop the missile being worshipped as brave, yet if a carrot is called a carrot people go into some hand wringing dance at same time as innocents are being abused physically. It's a sham.

Luis Suarez

Hopefully the FA clobber Suarez with another ban.In the initial incident I was behind him as I gave him the benefit of the lost in translation doubt but today is not acceptable.Liverpool need to get their employees in check.

This was the Man Utd fanzine that was confiscated today by the OB

Luis Suarez

Kenny really isn't helping Liverpool imho something happened in the tunnel before the players came out, old red nose does have a point,,,,

Luis Suarez

Look forward to seeing Sir Rednose brand the Fanzine a disgrace. ;)

Not really sure the Man Utd fans are that wrong..Liverpool are denying any wrong doing which is plain and simply wrong

Luis Suarez

Suarez did nothing to be banned for today, honest to god its like self whipping. If people want to get upset about something make it something worthwhile. The newspapers pander to all this while at same time real rights are being eroded and violence committed elsewhere.

Luis Suarez

its so tedious hearing stuff like 'why all the fuss about Suarez when we are killing innocent people in Basra':zzzzz:

he could bring the game in to disrepute, wouldn't be surprised if the FA acted on it tbh... as long as duckface joined him..

Luis Suarez

The real reason for this is the over politically-correctness of this country. Had something like this happened 20/30 years ago it would have been laughed off and the drama would be over in a week. Suarez was banned for 8 games for something which wasn't fully proven, and had full right not to shake Evra's hand. I feel like he has been the real victim in this case.

The fanzine is not exactly helping an already tense situation by printing a cut and keep KKK mask.

They are all as bad as each other. Ban the lot.

Luis Suarez

**** me, moribee's all over this thread again asking others why they care. Can anyone understand that??

Luis Suarez

Bored of it all to be honest, and the Terry thing. People get stabbed and beaten up over race, on the streets every day why should these over paid pricks get all the media attention. All brainless.

Luis Suarez

The real loser this time is Dalglish; he said before the game that he'd spoken with Suarez and that he would shake Evra's hand and then... but Sralex also should keep his mouth shut - his players are hardly role models. King Kenny is becoming a joke.

Luis Suarez

Lots of twittering that Evra kept his hand back

Evra offered his hand to Suarez, Suarez ignored him, and Rio took his hand away from Suarez's.

Luis Suarez

I haven't seen any of it, but maybe this is the real reason why the players have been made to line up and shake hands before kick off. It's been brought in to create additional controversy when two players, who have had a set-to, finally meet again. It certainly hasn't improved respect between opposing teams (which I imagine was the "real" reason why it was introduced for league games) and this type of thing just stokes the fires even more. If there hadn't been so much focus on "the handshake", maybe both players would have just got on with the football.

Good post and it would stop people wetting themselves over something which is of so little consequence

I find it quite funny.

viewing from afar, the whole story just seems bizarre. i love how the handshake has been creating these little "incidents", and it's great to see proper rivalry in football again, even if it is stirred up by an unsavoury incident. i hope Suarez stays and i look forward to the next installment of this "drama"

:pop:

Luis Suarez

Suarez doesnt like Evra - he got him banned for 8 matches. He would have been a hypocrite to shake his hand.

BTW it was no secret around Altrincham about Roy Keane's dislike of people with skin darker than his own - his opinions/actions never seemed to bother Ferguson in those days...anyone can jump on and off the racism bandwagon when it suits them I suppose, in a free country

So there goes satire as well. Totally on Man Utd's side today.

Luis Suarez

Suarez to get counselling from Mark Stimson

you heard it here first

Luis Suarez

Suarez got himself banned for 8 matches, for racially abusing Evra.

Suarez is a disgrace.

Luis Suarez

Suarez served the appropriate ban given to him and chose not to shake Evra's hand because he didn't want to. Stupid? justified? ....depends upon your opinion but it was his choice and all the hyperbole around it is laughable.

Luis Suarez

MOTD showing Super slo-mo replays of the hand shake with commentry...come on guys, we get it FFS!

i cant see how anyone can say its justified, evra has done nothing wrong unless i've missed our time warp back to the 50s and racial abuse is now tolerated and speaking out against it is a 'crime'.

:banghead:Please read my post again. Nowhere did I say racial abuse was "Justified". I was talking entirely about Suarez's decision not to shake Evra's hand. My point is this he served his ban for the offense which he obviously feels aggrieved about and chose not to shake Evra's hand. That is his decision and whilst it might be unpalatable to some he was not obliged to do so. If you want my opinion I think he was bloody stupid not to but he disagreed. The resulting hyperbole from the media, Ferguson et al is just that.

Luis Suarez

My feeling is that if Suarez cannot adapt his attitude to North European norms, he can feck off back to his antedelluvain roots.
And good riddance.

Luis Suarez

Suarez is a total disgrace in my opinion and I never thought much of Liverpool anyway and less so now. Well done to Rio for reacting so quickly and well.

Luis Suarez

This story has less excitement than the testcard. The media are lapping it up, but then I suppose it takes everyone away from police/reporter bungs.

Luis Suarez

MOTD showing Super slo-mo replays of the hand shake with commentry...come on guys, we get it FFS!

I was shouting at the telly watching that (on a rare occasion I watch MOTD). Shearer was droning on about how the whole saga should have been "oover and doon wiv", then they perpetuate the whole thing by analysing the handshake from a variety of angles? They were commentating on it like it was a penalty shout, "and you can just see Suarez's hand going out . . . there". Jonathan Pearce's commentary was laughable as well, feigning surprise at the handshake incident, obviously as the commentary is done after the game.

:imwith: typical premier league/ tabloid over the top nonsense.

Luis Suarez

Wish people would stop wetting themselves. It's a nothing story.

Why did Scott and simpleton not get the same coverage a few years ago when they refused to shake hands

Luis Suarez

Carry on caring, its good for your soul and I hope your passions transfers itself to all living creatures.

You really are an ignorant berk. Makes me wonder why i bother coming to the GPG when views like yours are deemed acceptable

So because racism was fine 30 years ago, he should get away with it? I don't think so - attitudes change, and rightly so.

It was fully proven in that he admitted calling Evra "negrito". The challenge was that this is fine in Uruguay, a challenge which was rightly not accepted as we're not in Uruguay and Evra is not Uruguayan.

:imwith:

It's pretty telling that the first thing moribee wrote when Suarez refused to shake Evra's hand was one of his trademark non-sequiturs... 'Evra is a prat'.

Luis Suarez

Please....it wasn't the first thing and it was after the game. So pleased he ran straight into Ferdinand, very apt.

Apparently the word used is also the name of an ice cream.

If I said you were FAB, would I get a ban from the GPG? ;)

If visitors to this country have to abide by our rules of racial harmony, how are some of the extreme muslim clerics allowed to get away with spouting their bile?

I dare say he was using it in the sense of "black person" rather than "ice cream" when he said it to Evra. Maybe there is a tiny chance that he was referring to the ice cream but it was not a criminal court so they were looking at it on the balance of probabilities rather than beyond reasonable doubt.

You wouldn't get a ban from the GPG as "fab" is not a racially offensive term.

As for the Muslim clerics, of course the same rules should apply to them, but two wrongs don't make a right.

Luis Suarez

It wasn't a big story nationally because it's only league one but it was a big deal to us. Whatever we thought then and now of whether or not Scotty is arrogant, sportsmanship and class are expectations of the English game. Snubbing people seeking a sporting handshake is neither.

I don't know if radical muslim cleric hate speech falls under the FA's jurisdiction though?

But players racially abusing others in the premier league does and in a 115-page report they explained pretty conclusively that Suarez had racially abused Evra. Ferdinand has a brother and a team mate who have both been victims of racial abuse this season. I hardly think taking a stance against racism is getting on a 'moral high horse', or 'snitching' (what moribee and tom the bee evidently think it is), and it's that kind of attitude that keeps people from wanting to address the issue when it raises its ugly head.

Haven't used the word snitching but so pleased you concur. It's all about opinions and degrees,as I have said before all abuse should be open to scrutiny. Half the ethnic population laugh at you and half laugh with you. You are all barking on wrong side of the door without the courage to go thru it and confront the real problems and the real disgusting things that are done in all our names.

Could we please just return to the topic in hand without having yet another thread taken over by this?? The thread is titled 'Luis Suarez' remember? And the significance of this story is that we are on a football forum and considering it in a football context. Though society and football overlap, it does not mean we have to compare the gravity of every single football incident with a f***ing illegal war in Iraq, or any other military action. Otherwise we'd never debate anything without considering 'yes well Lee was definitely fouled and it could cost us a place in the play-offs, but because of the increased military presence in Afghanistan I just can't concentrate on football right now'

This is how I'd sum it up. Suarez has admitted using a phrase that was considered racially offensive and rightly served a lengthy ban. Liverpool chose not to appeal the decision. Suarez then refused to shake Evra's hand in a gesture of deliberate disrespect. And what did Evra do wrong? He reported a fellow professional who had used a racial slur repeatedly against him. Though I can't stand Man Utd, the fact is they stood by their player and got a wrong righted. Liverpool have stood by Suarez and basically condoned his actions.

and for those who bang on about political correctness and hark back to some bygone shiny era when a 'joke' was taken in good humour, what you are describing is an era in football where black players were repeatedly abused not just by fans, but often by their own teammates and managers. If they were offended, who the f*** could they have complained to? The FA? Their own club? They often had no option but to put their heads down and get on with it, however hurtful and unfair the situation they found themselves in. I for one am glad that people are actually beginning to come forward in the confidence that if they report racism, something might actually be done about it. It might cause English football some temporary pain, but lets stamp this out once and for all, and make it clear that racial abuse will not be tolerated, and players who still use it will be driven out of the f***ing game like they deserve.

Your point.....apart from guilt....Suarez served his ban,end of. So what is the problem.
