Roberto Di Matteo

losing 2-0 not good news on the manager front for us.

They should be beating 'pub sides' like Preston.

Sorry your opinion is based on what exactly?

Apparently there has been whispers, I'm not sure where, probably on here, that Villa want DS to replace RdM.

The more I think about it, the more unlikely it seems. Villa consider themselves a Premiership club so they're hardly going to appoint a manager who hasn't had a full season in the Championship imo.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Villa will go for a "name" than look outside of the box, as they say..... DS will be at GP for a while yet. :)

I think it's down to the fact that DS supported Villa as a boy.

I read that Dean Smith was a Villa supporter as a kid but nothing else to suggest it's anything other than complete fiction.

Seems like a major disagreement with the owners. Only one winner there then.

Rumours of a fist fight between Pearson and the Chairman.

Apparently the chairman has been watching training sessions via a drone!

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Steve Clarke is interim boss
If they start winning he may get the job?
Lets hope they do win some

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

The Sun has Bruce and Johnson at BC as top of Villa's list. The hacks are just throwing in any likely name as usual, Smith will be in there due to his Villa supporting background but probably no more than that. Would imagine, as others have said, that they will go for a big name.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

From BBC website
"Dr Xia took sole responsibility to dismiss Di Matteo on Saturday after watching the abject 2-0 defeat at Preston on a live television feed in China."

Hope it never comes to that at Brentford....

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

There'll be a few more before the year is out.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Steve Bruce I reckon.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Nothing to worry about. BBC reiterating that Smith has ruled himself out. I suspect they'll plump for Bruce. bit of a no brainer.

If they're referring to his comments last week in GWL, he very much didn't rule himself out. Just said he wouldn't comment while they had a manager.

Down to 8/1 now.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Boylesports offering 16/1. Taken some of that to lessen the blow if it happens.

I think that was just a reference to the previous statement where he said he wouldn't discuss it (when Di Matteo was in a job) which was far from ruling it out (sadly).

Edit 7/1 third favourite.

Bruce has the best CV for the job, he's taken Championship clubs up and done OK in the premiership, Deano hasn't won anything............yet ? ;)

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Villa have only gone for names so far in everything they've done, there is no reason to suggest that they will go down a different path this time. They'll be drawn to Steve Bruce, Allardyce etc a lot quicker than Brentford's manager.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

After so many poor appointments they need to find someone who will be welcomed by their supporters. Their fans seem to want Mick McCarthy.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Allardyce in there!!!
Tainted goods
Chinese owner will stry well clear

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

The fans hated one ex blue managing them, they've changed their tune quick!!

They didn't hate him because he was ex-Blues though. Well, maybe in part but it was mostly because of his style of football. I think they'll have changed their minds by now though and would take Vlad the Impaler if he guaranteed a change in fortunes.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Relax. Its going to be Bruce.

Bob Bradley in

Bookies had Giggs

What do they know

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

There's been some lame twitter rumours about Smith going to Villa but I think based on no more than that he's a villa fan and doing well with us. I suspect he knows villa well enough to know that if he went and didn't immediately get them charging up the table he'd have less than a month before the fans would be calling for him to be sent back to cleaning the seats in the Holte End as he did when his dad was a steward there.

It would be a mad move for him unless he were just looking to be able to say he'd managed them and then retire on the redundancy money.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

It seemed a bit odd them giving Guidolin the job when it never quite seemed like they had full faith in him. Swansea seem on a downward spiral over the last year or so and I wouldn't be surprised if they got relegated. They just seem to have abandoned their philosophy a bit...

Sounds like the Yanks preferring one of their own. He has a good win ratio with managing foreign clubs but throwing him into a struggling PL team is very high risk.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

I think Villa knowing who he is and making an approach might come before that.

Well I'm pretty certain they'll know who he is after our match at their place recently

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Now 4/1 second fav, that 7/1 must have been taken. Sure he was not quoted on the very early show. Somebody know something?

I got 7's with PP. Like printing money.

Managerial Thread 2016 / 2017

Villa have taken punts before with Tim Sherwood, whose only previous managerial experience was half a season in charge at Spurs. I really hope Dean Smith stays, but the Birmingham Mail is now running spreads on him

http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/spo...ews/aston-villa-next-manager-boyhood-11971905

Though the same paper also muses on whether it may be 'too soon'

http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/aston-villa-job-could-come-11971917

Personally, while I recognise that Villa may have a richer heritage than us, they've been in trouble for some years and I struggle to see why they would necessarily be an attractive choice for an ambitious manager (apart from the cash, the fact that he's a Brummie etc). Going there could enrich you short-term, but also really damage your career
