he didnt have a great game but you need continuity to build up momentum and understanding, its no wonder the defence looks sh*t when we chop and change the left back and centre backs from one week to the next

He had no choice re changing the centre backs as Llera was suspended. I don't think Uwe expected a poor performance from Blair either. I'm sure he learned that neither of the centre backs can cope with a physical game and that only one can play alongside a stronger partner.

Marcel Eger

By saying that you've seen enough to think he's not good enough for thsi league as he's slow, weak and small isn't looking for a scapegoat, it's saying what you see. You need people to do that or the "everything is fine crew" lead us to 4-1 defeats at Daggers before their heads finally comes out of their arses.

He's started in five games in which we've kept four clean sheets so not such a bad record for a 'slow, weak and small' centre half is it?

Fine you say what you see NB but other people aren't going to always see it as you do just accept it. As I previously stated he was incredibly poor yesterday along with the rest of the back four and even the previously exemplary Lee wasn't really at the races.

Really not sure either where the comments about the "everything is fine crew" and the Dagenham result come into an opinion about a player....are we trying to blame Eger for that as well?

Marcel Eger

Looked slow and often caught out of position yesterday, no denying it was a poor performance. However, I thought he performed well at Walsall and Wycombe to think he had enough about him. Still needs time to adjust to League One so perhaps we can call it a bad day at the office for marcel.

Marcel Eger

The entire defensive performance was dreadful with individual players ranging from poor to appalling. I'm not sure it can all be laid at Eger's door but we need central defenders who can head the ball and be strong physically... 0 out of 2, then.

Marcel Eger

I'm laughing at some of the dross being written on here. Just last Saturday when Llera was criminal of the week, people called for Eger to be put back in the side, now after one game back in the side which featured 11 players who were below acceptable, he gets the stick. Face the facts people, the whole team weren't good enough today and I don't think its fair to blame one player

Marcel Eger

You cannot just blame Eger in isolation, the whole defence went AWOL and KO has been a shadow of his normal self lately too.

But disagreeing with everyone who has a point that involves something that may be slightly negative is unusual to say the least, Smiffy did it last year but thankfully chucked that in, you seem to be wearing the "Everything is fine" crown this season, it's ok to have an opinion but it's boring to believe all is great in the same way as thinking all is bad isn't true. Let people have their say without your "scapegoat" and other crap remarks.

Fully agree steve, he was no worse than Osborne who seems to be losing concentration throughout the game, his first bad mistake was early in the game when he gave the ball away in the penalty area, but nothing's been said about that ?

He's had a couple of mares but I'm hoping that being stuck next to Eger has a lot to do with that rather than Karleigh is suddenly rubbish, I think KO needs a dominating lump next to him to believe in what he does.

Yes agree you dont want to be changing your team (let alone defence) on weekly basis is not needed. However, players need to take responsibility when given their chance and you would have thought that an experienced player (in german football) like Eger would have been one of our shining lights. IMO I have not been convinced by him when I have seen him but it has tended to be against lower teams, but on Saturday he had a mare and a half. Not helped by Adams who was not at the races and Osborne who has struggled recently to find his best form. The difference with Osborne is that we know what he is capable of, and Adams I put down to inexperience (hopefully). With Eger however the signs are not good and on Saturday's game I would put Pim in front of him.

I bang on about it far too much I concede but KO isn't the brightest footballer and needs to be coached through a game, Saturday saw him in a back four with two rookies and a foreigner starting only his second home game of the season.
I can see why UR brought Llera in, it may not have worked given results but he is a leader and we lack them.

You read about the spine of the team and we don't know what ours is yet. KO is definitely good enough IMHO alongside the right communicative partner and Douglas in front makes sense to me but that's about it so far.

I'd like to see Harry Forrester given a go at home, we're told he's a creative midfielder with goals in him and he's been outstanding in training.
It maybe that with him in alongside Douglas and McGinn that Dave has to be prepared to sit deeper as well unless Bean or Kev O are preferred.

Up front if Grella isn't the answer and we don't have a another loanee lined up I'd be inclined to throw Weston up top alongside Clayton until Gary Alex is fit for selection.

It was gash on Saturday and so far UR has addressed poor performances immediately and we've seen a positive response, think it's a shame we haven't got a home game
to put in right.

Marcel Eger

When the cross came in for the first goal, I didn't watch the ball, I just watched Jordan Rhodes. He was totally out of position, so he took a few steps to his left, forward, right, jumped, headed, scored. He couldn't have found this easier to do if he was the only player in the box. Alarming.

Marcel Eger

I could equally accuse you of being a "We're doomed Capt Mannering" glass half empty type NB but enough of the mud slinging and back to the topic:wave:.

As I pointed out Eger has been in a defence which has recorded four clean sheets out of five games so I wondered how you justified your slow, weak and small comments based upon the evidence so far? I equally conceded he was incredibly poor on Saturday but you conveniently ignore that and ramble on about "everything is fine" crown etc, etc.

If in a truly appalling defensive performance people pick on one individual player then it fully justifies use of the word "scapegoat". You don't rate Eger that's fine, time may well prove you right for me the jury is out still.

Uwe will have to make a decision next week re who will play alongside Llera. So we'll see what Uwe's verdict is. One of KO and ME won't be playing.

Marcel Eger

Thompson wasn't appalling, Adams failed on his forward play, KO and Eger were rubbish, I still recall KO's facial expressions towards Eger at Hereford, we were stood on the side and close to the pitch, Karleigh was trying to talk Eger through it but looked confused and bemused at times IMO. I was led to believe that Eger was "the enforcer" and "leader" that we needed, whatever he is, he isn't that.

With Eger being left sided centre back and Adams having a complete mare saturday in open play Eger looked dreadful too. However the worst part of his game saturday was the set plays in which he didn't once get ahead of his man an allowed free headers that could led to a scorline of 6 or 7 against. Osborne was dreadful too. Things can only get better, can't they?

I posted last week that UR sees the players in training everyday and will have had his reasons for not starting Eger and also for choosing to bring in Llera on loan - I think Saturday showed why.
There were several people who wanted Eger to play and they got their way, do they believe he should keep his place and regain his form or be dropped and get up to speed in the development squad?

Sadly I don't think the current contracted squad of players is good enough to win promotion so believe we need to play the loan market which is a gamble.
I hope UR stays brave and picks adventurous teams to entertain rather than safe formations and reliable players to not lose games.

I agree re your findings of the current squad. We may be closed with all injured parties back, we are short up fron imo unless Grella proves to be the answer (he can only do that if he has a chance), similar for Forrester. My concern with Eger is that he is not suited to the physical requirements of the english game so no amount of time in the dev squad will resolve that. He is also lacking in other areas which will be difficult to rectify. Feel the same about Clarkson (just a hunch), but maybe 1 game being played out of position is unfair to cast judgement. Hope he proves me wrong but did not see much in his play on sat to make me smile.

Marcel Eger

He was really poor on Saturday, too many times he lost the man he was meant to be marking and it cost us a goal. Could have been more

Marcel Eger

I missed Saturday but I have been alarmed at a few of Eger's performances this year already. At Wycombe I thought he was particularly bad and just looked lost at times, constantly out of positions and having to pull/drag/foul the opposition to try and get himself out of trouble. I posted this at the time on the report thread and asked if anyone agreed but got no response and several were saying he had a decent game!

To me he looks slow, weak, poor in the air and doesn't seem to have the distribution skills that he was rumoured to have..... I not one to slate a player usually but have real concerns about this guy and hope he either improves dramatically or moves on!

Any posts of mine are purely my own opinion without any foundation but I suspect that the Clarkson month long loan was a short term fix once GA was injured and not looked on as the long term solution alongside Clayton. It gives UR a chance to look at him and decide whether to extend or send back and I have no problem with that as guessing that the player(s) he wanted weren't available.
I have to say I have no idea why Grella was signed if he isn't seen as good enough to start unless he isn't fully match fit yet - it feels to me as if he's seen as an option off the bench and he certainly looks to have quick feet and a football brain but not sure if he has goals in him.

I've no theory on Eger, he looked a bit rusty to me against Yeovil when I was impressed with other newies and certainly not the John Buttigieg type I was hoping for - if we play with two young, pacy wingbacks bringing the ball out, is it vital we have a ball playing centre back? I've seen very few good ones at this level over the years and if the key objective is keeping big lumps from getting shots or headers on target maybe we would be better suited with KO, Leon, Llera types - it worked for Preston and Huddersfield.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a side capable of playing free flowing football in all areas that results in wins but struggling to think of a side at this level that really played that way - maybe Swindon under Hoddle but that was a long time ago - most promotion winning sides and are big, strong, quick and possess a mixture of experienced leaders and of course strikers capable of scoring 20-30 goals

Marcel Eger

It can be the case that players from abroad find it hard to adjust to the power and pace of the English game particularly at our level.

I wonder if ME is in this category and if so maybe it will take time for him to adjust.

At the moment he looks a weak link whichever way you look at it.

Marcel Eger

He was very, very poor on Saturday. Unfortunately he was not alone though.

Shame as I think people are willing for him to do well.

I think you're right, there is no baggage with him, no Orient or other sh*te past whatsover, St Pauli fans coming over to see him is a massive accolade, he seems like a decent fella too. Ivar looked crap in midfield so perhaps this talk of him being a defensive midfielder might mean something. Bundesliga II is really exciting football that usually ends up 4-2 or with plenty of goals at least, I know this due to football betting and sitting watching my money go one way or another on line. The forwards look class as the goals rattle in, maybe just maybe the defending isn't as polished, they are cracking games to watch by the way.

Wouldn't describe Jordan Rhodes as a "big lump" or Ian Hume come to that, but they both scored easy goals against us ?

Humes easy 30 yarder you mean ?

OK but in the same team as Rhodes is a lad called Alan Lee and alongside Hume against Tranmere you may have noticed Neil Mellor - someone else I'm sure will confirm that they are "lumps".
If that is the best way you can do in picking holes in my post carry on.........you really do post some xxxx

............unfortunately starting to have doubts about this fella.......... no pace yesterday and not dominant in the air........ hoping to be proved wrong...........

Lucky not to be sent off yesterday.
Im yet to be convinced by Eger.

Marcel Eger

I missed his debut against Yeovil and read the glowing reports.
Then I saw him at Hereford three days later and thought I was watching a different fella to the one I'd read about. Thought it was just a bad night.
At Wycombe he looked hurried and rushed and made some poor judgements, but we won and thought again give the guy some slack.
At Uddersfield out of his depth whilst Jordan, Novak and Lee bullied him.
BUT better at Charlton like the whole team, but at the moment he's our fourth best centre back, but the challenge is he's here for two years, so he has to adapt and toughen up his game.
I'm interested to see if he learns quickly like Ivar Ingarmarsson did all those years ago at c/back or if he just becomes a squad member and tourist. :looks:

Marcel Eger

He's probably just finding it hard to adjust to the "pace" and "power" of the English game, obviously it's alot slower in Europe.

Marcel Eger

Probably saved the game for us at times today imo! Hopefully a sign of a corner being turned ? :)

Marcel Eger

While hes not the quickest he was pretty solid and made some crucial tackles at the back, particularly in the first half- and while hes no Carles Puyol, he was effective today imo. :sorted:

Marcel Eger

Was one bit today where he was one on one with a s****horpe forward attacking with the ball. I thought in that moment we'll find out now if he has a future here. He took the ball cleanly and with strength. Was impressed generally with his defending today, but clearly is not strong in the air as there continues to be a vunerability to crosses. But is improving with each game and I like the partnership with llera - hope it continues

Marcel Eger

Really? I thought he looked look weight and a very average player.

Just shows that it is all about opinions. For my mind yesterday he showed some excellent defending, calm organised good on the ball and the tackle in our box as the Scunny player ran at him was excuisite. If he continues in this mould then in my opinion we have a very good defender on our hands and one that will give Uve problems when it comes to selection.

Particularly impressed after the horror show against Huddersfield showed greta strength of mind after that game, Only dissappointment was histrionics when he went down as if shot by a snipre after the guy put a hand in his face, not acceptable in my book and Rossler needs to have a word ( Myles was just as bad when their lad got sent off rolling around as if about to die then up like a rabbit when the red was shown)

Completely agree with you about Marcel. Was class yesterday and looked an outstanding defender. Harsh on Myles though. It was a pretty rough tackle!

Marcel Eger

As stated in another thread, maybe the reason Myles jumped up so quickly was because their number 12 spat at him while he was down??

Marcel Eger

At least twice, maybe three times he had to mop up the mess Llera (sp?) left behind. Some great tackles that if mistimed would've been penalties.

Marcel Eger

Struggled to dominate in first half but to be fair Thommo and Llera were flattering to deceive either side of him

Much better second half, calmer and made some well timed tackles

Agree about Weston, though it was still a booking IMHO. As for Eger, it was right in front of me in New Road and I clearly saw Eger took an elbow/forearm full in the face, which should have been a straight red card.

Marcel Eger

Some people in the match reports thread having a pop at Marcel. I actually thought he did ok when he came on last night and ok against Scunthorpe.

He is unconventional in his defending at times but last night in particular I thought he made some good tackles. And the free header in the box last night was Llera's man, not his......

Marcel Eger

Good player I reckon. I also like his passion. I'm afraid the weak link in the centre of defence is Llera.

Marcel Eger

He is a centre back who is scared of heading a football, also scared of any form of ariel challenge from the opposition. Coward.

Marcel Eger

I think he's improved considerably over the past two home games and put in another decent shift last night. He gives away several inches to Llera but won far more in the air than him and seems to be adapting to the more physical aspects of League 1.

Marcel Eger

Don't rate him I am afraid, too lightweight for this division, not good in the air, distribution crap unless passing sideways (which he does a lot of).
