Marcel Eger

Marcel Eger

Good player I reckon. I also like his passion. I'm afraid the weak link in the centre of defence is Llera.

He's struggled at times e.g. Huddersfield game.....but so have all our back four at some time or other. He's no Hreidarsson (but who is) and for my money he's had more good games than bad. He is a calm player and can find his team mates with a pass. I wish he would bring the ball out from the back for more often but with all the constant chopping and changing of the defence it doesn't exactly fill a player with confidence to know one error and he could find himself dropped back on the bench. KO's injury was unfortnate but for my money we looked more secure at the back when he did come on last night. I'm sure others will disagree.

Marcel Eger

I will get a little technical here. We were far more open once he came on as he is not tight enough to Llera far to much space which led to Douglas having to cover deeper and centrally and losing then the battle in midfield area. Central defenders should not be constantly 20 or 30 yeard apart from each other. That happened when he replaced Osborne.

Marcel Eger

Don't rate Marcel or Llera very highly - we look vulnerable when these two are together.

Sorry disagree with that. Llera was the attacking centre half and Eger swept up behind him from what I could see. For the majority of the game Stevenage were only playing with one upfront.

When Osborne and Llera were together they both looked like men who didn't know who the other one was let alone an effective partnership. Both gave away stupid free kicks and misdirected headers. By the end of the game Llera was playing as a forward and Dave was covering at the back

Marcel Eger

For me, last night proved that KO & LL should be our firdst choice pairing when all are fit. Karleigh IMO looks so much more confident with LL next to him.

Marcel Eger

No doubt in my mind that the by far and away the best cb partnership is Legge and Egar. Osborne is a constant liability in that he is often caught out and needs to put in last ditch 'tackles' (fouls) and Llera, whilst one 'incredible cross field pass' in twenty may reach it's destination, is not as good as Rosler (and Llera!) think! Equally we are seriously kidding ourselves (sorry if wrong forum) if we think we are anywhere near a promotion or play off side - we need a striker who has the hunger to score goals, we have needed such a striker since I don't know when (Holdsworth/Blissett - even O'Mara?) - teams that get promoted, generally speaking, have an outstanding predatory striker - we do not have one and, apart from the odd short term loanee, have not had one for many, many years.

Marcel Eger

Eger was lucky the ref let him push the stevenage player over at the end and didnt red card him.

He has got better lately but seeing as Stevenage hardly attacked he wasnt called upon to often

Could have under the letter of the law but the referee had the sense to see the Stevenage player was just playing for time and dliberately slowing play down and Eger wanted to get the ball and get on with it. On the other hand you could commend Eger for at least showing some urgency which was a commodity lacking in a few of our players yesterday evening.

Marcel Eger

I thought he did alright again last night to be honest.

Thats said there was one massive hoof from them late in the game where he basically bottled the header.

Marcel Eger

He is awful. Constantly done for pace against Scunthorpe so was reduced to feigning fouls. He doesn't attack/head the ball even unchallenged. His 'passing game' is merely the ability to always pass it square. Legge and Osborne by a country mile

Marcel Eger

Yes a Centre back who is scared to head a ball or challenge in the air

Marcel Eger

Logan's hop and sprint into the New Rd was pretty impressive though...

As for Eger I thought he looked OK last night, he can control and pass the ball well and defends well enough although he is hardly the Bundesliga player we were led to believe he was.

I am somewhat underwhelmed though by Llera who is not a patch on Leon. Llera's style seems to be based on stopping his man getting the ball hence the number of free kicks he gives away whereas Leon always attacks the ball. I can't recall Llera having a clean header last night.

Marcel Eger

Also to be fair to Eger he has made some excellent challenges where he has stayed on his feet and just calmly taken the ball from an onrushing attacker

Marcel Eger

If I were Logan I'd be looking to my left and thinking what the hell have I done to deserve this! Eger and Llera are a complete shambles!!!!!

Yes a "Country Mile" being the approximate distance of one of KO's & Legges passes to feet;).

Quite simply none of us have a clue as to who our first choice partnership should be because no one has particulalry distinguished themselves there so far this year.

Hopefully when players are back and fit Uwe will work out his best partnership and stick to it. Chopping and changing Centre Halves each week does nobody any favours.

Marcel Eger

Apparently Eger plays a good holding game in midfield. Just thought I'd lob that into the mix;)

I think thats very harsh, our defensive record is ok. Tis other end that is kaput

Sorry to disagree but that is bollox. A sweeper plays behind, Eger and Llera played flat and had a 20 yerd gap between them at all times. I purposely watched the diffrence when Osborne was replaced. I saw what Eger was doing, effectively give himself more space to recive and play the ball himself, he was almost playing right back he was so far across. This causes problems in that Douglas has to come closer and further back to receive a pass allowing a central 3 of Stevenage time to close in on areas that we were then trying to get in behind. We were better force going forward when Osborne was playing than when Eger played imho. Simply because of the way he wants to play.
Listen to Hansen and Lawrenson and you will hear them often comment on the distance between centre backs being a concern, and that is as I see it a problem that Eger caused last night.

Marcel Eger

I agree but we don't seem to break down any team that puts 9 or 10 behind the ball and that starts at how you play from the back. A higher line, closer central defensive areas allow play to be in the attacking half. You wont score goals if all your good passing is between 18 yards box and the half way line.

Marcel Eger

My Dad spoke to him today... he was very upset about yesterday and was worried attendances would drop... he also mentioned that it was so hard because uwe has taught them one thing and the crowd are screaming another thing in the players faces..

I think Marcel therefore needs to realise that the crowd would like a little urgency, no matter what the style of play. We all want on the deck football, but at times yesterday at 0-0, and even more worryingly at 0-1, we were knocking the ball around as if the 3pts were in the bag. We haven't scored a goal at home for 3 games and need to start playing football in the right areas of the pitch, not d!cking about on the edge of our own area.

That's fine youre as entitled to your opinion as I am to mine. Read my post again I didn't say Eger played as a sweeper I said he swept up-there is a considerable difference. It was quite obvious Llera attacked the ball as he's supposedly better in the air and Eger sat off him picking anything else up- a job he did reasonably well. If you look at Stevenages goal I'll think you'll find Llera and Adams were culpable. Stevenage played one man up top for the majority of the match whom Llera invariably picked up. If Eger is to be criticised it's that he didn't bring the ball out from the back more effectively as a ball playing centre half.
Not quite sure of the point you're making re Douglas dropping deeper or Eger drifting across to the right. If Logan pushes on (as he will do as an attacking full back) Eger will come across to cover the gap.

Defence wasn't the major issue last night it was our total impotency in and around the Stevenage box that was the real problem.

However ....... Swansea scored a fantastic goal at the weekend. Ball went nowhere but sideways for half a dozen passes, one the of the opposition centre backs broke ranks and a Swansea player popped in the space he left - simple pass across, goal. Beautiful. Won't happen at Brentford because .....

I like Eger, he looks comfortable on the ball, positionally sound and is good in the tackle. However he really misses a proper english style CB next to him. Llera isn't as bad as some would have you believe, but he gives away some cheap fouls in dangerous areas and his distribution isn't consistent enough to be a major facet of his game.

With Osborne regressing a little, we need the no nonsense defending machine that is Leon Legge back from injury.

As for the contradicting ideas on retaining the ball in defence from fans and manager, the players need to inject some urgency and ideas into their game and we will forgive anything. Its just the aimlessness of some of that passing among the back 4 especially at 1-0 down which was so frustrating. If we continue to persist with the tactic with no joy the fans will be likely to be getting at the players even sooner.

No doubt we will score a fanatastic goal once in a while too.

The striker is static, the midfielders dont make forward runs and the wingers hog the touchline

When I heard we'd signed a German defender I was impressed, hoping Eger would be as good as Ivar or even Hermann. In the performances I've seen, Eger hasn't yet lived up to my no doubt unreasonably high hopes and expectations. One reason is his lack of fitness which is not helped by Rosler's perpetual squad rotation and the injury situation. It's essential for centre backs to develop a partnership and Eger, nor the others, have had that opportunity. I still hope Eger will blossom into the player I hoped he'd be.

I think it's a long, long time before we see the likes of Hermann again and let's not forget Ivar was considered as a midfielder before his conversion to an excellent centre half so let's give Eger some time.

Fully agree with your point re chopping and changing of centre halves. I personally think Uwe should stick with a preferred pairing (injuries permitting).

Marcel Eger

A broad range of opinion on here! I'd guess that a couple of good wins with clean sheets and the centre-backs will be heroes... whoever they are!

Marcel Eger

.............................a calm and composed performance this evening......................

Marcel Eger

It was an assured performance tonight, hopefully he's starting to settle and with a continued run in the side we'll see the best of him. Thought Llera also looked very comfortable. With Legge returning tonight I really wonder who Uwe considers his first choice CB pairing!

Marcel Eger

...........apart from the halfway line slip up, had another good game..................

Marcel Eger

Solid enough today. :sorted: Getting used to the 'English' Game now

Marcel Eger

Looked comfortable and solid all game

I like Eger as I have a very strong bias on behalf of the players who can get it down and play. I'm pleased he seems to be coping better with the physical side but I'm reserving judgement til he faces a right handful anytime soon. I've always thought that centre backs need a bit of nasty and I'm not sure he's that way inclined. I'd like to see him succeed as we'll need someone to play it out from the back. I'd like to see him partner Legge who has enough nasty for the two of them.

Possibly, but I remember being surprised when he bullied Strevens all game at Wycombe. I don't have a problem with Llera but it was good to have Leon back, he is a monster
and really hope he and Eger gel.

Sonofabee my mother could bully Strevens [ God bless her - she's 90]:D.

Marcel Eger

has being playing well recently and deserves to keep his place for next week

Marcel Eger

The pace of Wright-Phillips mixed with a blend of Llera, Legge or Eger leaves me with this image of Bees fans returning home covered by a giant omelette - can't think why

Marcel Eger

...........unlucky again to be dropped today..........

Marcel Eger

I think he should have been there instead of Dean.. we needed experience in the middle. We didn't have it.

They scored a goal from 30 yds plus and Dean did nothing wrong, Eger wouldn't have addressed the problem.... a lack of firepower!

Marcel Eger

I know. I saw the goal.. but an experienced head around the pitch might have stopped an onslaught in the first half and encouraged the team a bit more...

It's all ifs and might to be honest..
