It was, but he dropped it way before he waa "fouled"
Ok thanks. As I said, I wasn't particularly watching the game. Did the players remonstrate a lot about it not being a foul? Did the TV show a number of replays to show that Raya was lucky?

I'd guess that on the Arsenal social media the fans of Ramsdale would have been slating Raya for dropping the ball.

I thought it was a clear foul on Raya, the ref blew up straight away and there was little dissent from Everton. Sky cameras immediately focussed on Ramsdale on the bench and captured his raised eyebrow "expression" to a team mate about the incident. Raya v Ramsdale is going to be one of Sky's big club clickbait running stories of the season. No surprise Gary Neville has a strong opinion about it.

I think he came into us ahead of what Raya did when he joined from Blackburn . Raya had some proper howlers and we werent in the Premiership then
Yes but we signed david as a younger inexperienced keeper 4 years ago so maybe 22-23,Were we signed flekken as a experienced international goalkeeper who could bring experience and calmness to our back line but he bring the opposite flaps at crosses cant even punch the ball clear and doesn't try to catch when no one even near him.and at his age cant see it getting better.

Yeah get your point , keepers play until theyre 89 , so hopefully he'll learn

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

I think Flekken will be fine longterm, just needs to become familiar with the league and nature of goalkeeping over here. It'll take time but he's definitely been punished for small errors here and there. It's an unforgiving league in which to learn in - see Bazunu last season - whereas Raya was able to develop in a relatively similar environment in the Championship.

It's interesting to note that our last three goalkeepers signed from the Continent and with no prior experience of goalkeeping in this country have all struggle to settle - lots of punching, getting outmuscled, etc. Seems goalkeeping over here is a very different game.

Speaking recently, to a goalie of some repute, I wonder if all the technical coaching can sometimes be confusing (& even lead to doubts & in turn a lack of confidence?)

For me, as a manager of little repute, all I can offer on the technical side is ...... "Flek ... ffs MAN UP" :hat: :ROFLMAO:

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Why is everyone giving Flekken sh*t for the penalty when it was clearly Hickey's fault? Hickey doesn't fill me with confidence tbh

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Personally, I just don't think he's quite good enough. I know I'll take some flekk for this.
It's too early to make that call mate. Raya had a tough start too.

If we have a season full of similar mistakes then i'd be worried too, but way too early to make that call.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Takes time for any player from overseas to settle in and even more so with a goalkeeper where mistakes are more highlighted and can be crucial in the results and final score in games. For me, he needs time to get to know the defenders and part of the learning curve in how to adapt to the English Premiership.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

I don’t think we’ve played yet with a consistent defence this season, it’s going to take time for all of them and now we’ve got a change of full-backs to contend with, Collins is still relatively new and Mee has looked very uncomfortable since his return from injury, only Pinnock is really performing.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Not yet. Raya was not Raya until we developed him. Remember the ‘he’s too small’ debate?
I agree but Raya was a lot younger than Flekken is now when he signed. Raya was bought to develop, Flekken is an experienced keeper.
No use getting on his back though, he’ll remain as No1 so might as well get behind him.

I agree about this incident, although I wouldn't widen it out to criticize Hickey as a player. I made this point already about the blame for the so-called penalty. Hickey made a mistake and as even Shearer didn't think it was a penalty it's a bit OTT to slate Flekken. I'm more concerned with the lack of authority he showed in the lead up to the disallowed goal, which I thought was a soft foul where the ref got him out of jail.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

It probably didn't help flekken that the flapping punch, disallowed goal and the penalty all all seemed to happen quite quickly

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

Personally, I suspect we will see Strak take his place at some point. At least to give him a chance in a run of PL games. May be wrong, of course (!) but certainly wouldn't be surprised.

Listening to the Goalkeeper's Union podcast, Richard Lee for what it's worth thought the Wilson disallowed goal was a foul.

He said something along the lines of Wilson being a master of the subtle foul on goalkeepers, and that although it was a small movement he'd blocked the hand that Flekken was going to punch with. He also said it was a "nightmare ball to deal with". On the penalty he also agreed not a foul but thought it was clever play by Gordon.

The lack of goalkeepers in punditry does annoy the hell out of me though. It's a real specialist area that most pundits appear to know very little about, yet you still have them trotting out the same old chestnuts... Keane "a world class keeper saves that" and Shearer "keepers get too much protection" ... every bloody week.

Well I'm glad that Richard Lee was right on both points - both the foul and the non-foul were very evident on the replays, though I'll admit for Wilson's arm block it was only visible from one camera angle - otherwise Flekken's arm appeared to seize up for no reason.

And totally agree about how there need to be more ex-goalkeeper pundits - Rob Green is particularly good.

No chance. If you believe strakosha will be no.1 after being here for over a year and done sod all, you’re living in cloud cuckoo land…..

It wasnt a penalty. End of.

He made one flap which resulted in nothing.
Other than that he done ok. There wasnt a great deal for him to do.

Raya was the hardest player to replace .
So far, I'm more positive with his performances than I expected.
His passing is sound.
Hes made a couple of good saves.

Some of the overkill I've read about him especially on Twitter, is beyond bed wetting.
You know the more i see that incident the less it is a penalty.
Its not as soft as the Richarlison one at Goodison in May 22,but is up there.
When Jamie Carragher called it the Elephant in the room on Monday night i was even more convinced we have been royally stitched up by the ref and NUFC who ,lets face it,if that decision had gone our way they would have gone absolutely nuts on the sidelines,in the stands,in the slums of Geordieland,in the Tyne,on Lindisfarne and Sky tv Sudios North East region,Wallsend and Russel brands conspiracy theory show.
We would have been lucky to get away from there alive.
But of course our player would have booked for diving and we would never have got that decision in the first place.
Nathan Collins can testify to that

Not at all.
I am surprised Strak is still here tbh.

I've been quite happy with Flekken so far to be honest...has looked better than any other goalkeeper we've had who is not David Raya. We were never going to sign someone as good as Raya but he offers a lot of the same traits as David did. Let's see where he is in 6 months.

Are you suggesting patience? You do know that many on here don't have that, one poor game and it's the end of the road for that player ?

Nothing wrong with punching the ball when under pressure, and the likes of Tarkowski and Branthwaite will be in his face for any corner or free kick on Saturday, but it is essential to punch the ball a fair distance. I'm sure Thomas and the coaches will make appropriate arrangements to cope with Dyche-ball. Can't understand the sniping at Flekken, it's not as if he made a serious error costing us a place in the EPL or anything.

Whether he punches or catches, we need to do a better job protecting him, whoever the designated covering player is.

My preference is the Raya philosophy: where reasonably practicable, catch the ball. Punch only under serious pressure (i.e. where it will be difficult to catch and land safely with the ball under control). When catching a ball, you present the whole span of two hands to the ball (maybe 24cm x 30cm at a rough guess of an average). When punching with one hand (like the Red Star keeper last night), you offer up the surface area of your fist (maybe 10cm x 8cm?). Which of the above stands the best chance of making solid contact with a moving object? Couple that with the fact that your arms will stretch high above the head of an opponent, and that you are allowed to use big, tacky gloves to help you hold on, not to mention the thousands of hours you invest in perfecting the skill of catching a football.

I have no problem with Flekken. I think he'll do well for us. You don't win the Bundesliga golden glove for nothing. He looks like a good keeper, and, like Raya, he has very good feet and the vision to execute a range of passes. I just really hope that he is persuaded to tweak his thinking when it comes to the relative merits of punching and catching.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

The main problem Flekken faces at the moment is that many of our supporters decided in pre season that he was no good so will now use every slight error as a reason to proclaim how right they were about him all along.

The same thing happened with players like Sawyers, no matter how well he did for us some fans just were not having him.

It's all a bit sad really.

Not really sure why he even came rushing out on Saturday - could've just left it alone. Ah well, these things happen - he's clearly decent and he's learning. Never really understand the rush to judgment - especially when we've seen soooooo many examples (in our recent history!) of players taking time to adapt etc before showing their class. Would be great if everyone could hit the ground running, but back in the real world...

Two things re last Saturdays game , one if he had stayed on his post , the best Gordon could have hoped for was a very unlikely cross which Mark was in position for , second if he was brave and dived out towards the ball he would at the worst pushed the ball away and got a free kick from the dangerous play by Gordon

Lets give the lad time before getting on his back, not sure of the Goal Keepers coach’s name but he made Raya a better keeper

Totally agree. They are the same people still going on about raya, the gk who doesn’t want to play for us anymore. Think it is time to support the players that do want to play for the club.

It probably did for Bentley and maybe exposed Daniels as not being up to what we were looking for technically beyond traditional goalkeeping. Ramsdale has spoken about how challenging Arteta’s demands were for him. I think it unlikely we’d have spent the amount on Flekken we have if we or he had doubts about the technical requirements of training in the way that has made Raya so much better a keeper and integral to a successful modern play style. Few players in any position can rely at this level on their natural style to be enough to let them thrive.

why isn't flekken coming out for the crosses there 2nd goal crossed into 6 yard box has to be the keepers cant even say he stayed on his line he was inside his goal.Whats he scared off cost us another goal.Looks like we be a long hard season with flekken in goal and unable to dominate his box and claim crosses.

maybe that is why he was sold?

excellent distribution isn't enough while he settles in and finds much needed courage.

Maybe we need to revert to 3 x CBs to give more cover?

Considering he’s much taller, it’s surprising how much of a drop off he is from Raya in the air. Stays on his line a lot, and when he does come out looks shaky with punches rather than catches. The 2nd goal doesn’t happen with Raya. The defence don’t look comfortable with him at all.

Good point. He's half a foot taller that Raya but worse in the air. Against a team like Everton the keeper needs to dominate his box. Very poor today (though not the only one)

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

I know Mark has his fan club on here but he really does not look like PL quality. He doesn't inspire confidence and that must rub off onto the defence playing in front of him.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

If he continues to play like he has for the past couple of games he will need to be dropped, simple as that. Lack of confidence on balls in the box needs to be seriously worked on. The worry is that he's 30, so if it's always been an issue for him (and I've not idea if that's the case) then he ain't gonna get any better!

maybe when scouting we seem more concerned with how good he is with his feet when we should be concentrating on his goalkeeping skills first, same with collins decent at bringing the ball out of defence but not so good at defending as dacoure was his man for the 1st and messed up for the third.

Mark Flekken (Closed Thread)

This signing has me really scratching my head.

He seems unable to command his box and catch a ball. That's the basics I'm afraid.

You never mess around with your goalkeeper. The club would have purchased him to be 'ready' from day one.

I genuinely hope he proves me wrong.
