Mark Phillips

There isn't a thread on him-I think, so..What does anyone think of him?
Will go straight into the team alongside Bennett because of Wilson's return to Bristol City?

Post here please.

Mark Phillips

He hasn't done anything wrong in his brief appearances, he got pulled out wide too often at Luton but thats down to others failing to track back.

Is he good enough to start?

I was very impressed with Johnson when he played - he looked very combative and I hope he gets his chance at cb.

I agree - players getting free headers (ie. yesterday) didn't happen too often when Brett Johnson was in the team. Regardless of whether it's at left-back or centre-back, his return will be very welcome, in my opinion.

Mark Phillips is one of those players who unfortunately looks a bit like a mistake waiting to happen. Hopefully he'll prove me wrong.

Mark Phillips

what is the situation with BJ, another one I read would be back in a week................about 4 weeks ago....

Phillips can't run properly, but he looked ok on Saturday. The real test will be his first league 90minutes for us

Mark Phillips

We will only know when started and played in a full league fixture. I do like Johnson though and having a right sided and left sided centre half is always a bonus IMO.

Mark Phillips

ive only seen him briefly but he does seem to run without lifting his legs off the ground

Mark Phillips

From what I saw against Morecombe and read about Rochdale I think Phillips will be fine.

Mark Phillips

When I saw him play against Woking pre-season he looked crocked... He still looks crocked but has improved massively...

I can not understand why he runs like he is powerwalking....

Mark Phillips

Did he mean that shot at the weekend?

Looked like a cross to me but if it was a shot it was our best attempt on goal.
I think he looks a decent player and his way of running doesn't matter although when he gets up a head of steam his running looks normal. Maybe he needs a bigger pair of boots ? :D

Mark Phillips

Nobody can answer that question, I would hope so but there is a guy called Johnson who is returning from injury.

Yes but Johnson is to unreliable and lets the ball bounce over his head way to much. With phillips we have a little more assurance and he is very consistant unlike bj.

I have to admit I have no idea how you arrive at the conclusion that Johnson is unreliable.

Not sure how you formed that opinion

IMHO Johnson started well & improved with every game he played.

Once he's back we'll see an improvement I'm sure

Mark Phillips

He's not really been tested but he's looked OK so far. He'll need more than one 90-minute match to get up to fitness as he's been out for so long, so let's hope H&W is just a run out for him. Johnson is our number one contracted left-sided CB, given that Bennett is on loan to us. He's back in training now, so I hope he gets on the bench soon because he gives us defensive options... and may be needed in January.

Mark Phillips

A pivotal moment for Phillips in his career, if he takes the opportunity that is about to present and does well he can relaunch his career, flunk it and AS will most probably look to bring someone in and non league beckons.

I think he will do well, he was unlucky that he got injured in pre season and Wilson stepped up so remarkably well.

ok what are you talking about he always lets the ball bounce over his head and is not good at joining in with the attacks like sammy wood dose and hes slow he is really a centre back.

I think we've been a poorer team without Brett Johnson in it personally, but I guess it's all about opinions. I thought one of his best attributes was the way he attacked the ball both aerially and on the ground.

:sorted: have to agree think johnson should fit in the side better than phillips

Mark Phillips

Phillips is getting better each time

When Phillips came on at Chester it showed that he was keen to play, although a very poor team performance his cameo could and should have made him man of the match. Although I believe we look and play better when the ball is kept on the ground, Phillips allowed for the long punt to continue to the frontman as happens most of the time when Elder is on pitch.

With January fast approaching we will need both Phillips and BJ to be fit to ensure we keep up a challenge. However we will still need to be looking for cover unless Bennett signs for rest of season, in that case BJ & Phillips would fight for other place.

agree with that, i think we've missed Johnson's competitiveness since he's been out the side, looked a good LB to me, so hopefully he's an even better centre-back!

haven't seen Phillips enough yet to see how good he is, he looked ok against Morecambe and when he came on against Rochdale though, haven't noticed his 'unusual' running style yet!!!

agree re: Johnson, thought he'd have been back by now but must've been more serious that thought, as for Phillips - he does have an 'odd' running style! maybe due to the serious knee injuries he had.

...................lmpressive game today..........................

Mark Phillips

His performance was such today that we didn't miss Wilson and that should tell you all you need to know. I'm pleasantly surprised that he and Bennett appear to have formed such a decent understanding so quickly.

Mark Phillips

As the season progresses the absence of Wilson will be sourly felt. Phillips is an ok defender but I have my doubts as to whether the club can achieve promotion with him playing at the back. He was undoubtedly at fault for the goal conceded against Havant last week; a very poor goal indeed.

Remember the Bees were playing against a team that does not score many goals and only 4 other teams in the division have scored less.
The point is that he has not been suitably tested yet against a decent attack and I hope he proves worthy.

If Bennett gets injured then Brentford are really in trouble. Hopefully Phillips will get better the more games he plays.

I have my doubts if we can achieve promotion, but it will not be because you think Phillips is not good enough at the back. He needs time on the pitch, something that he has not had. My doubts are based on teams in this league that might be a tad better than us at this moment in time. I hope that I'm wrong, I still feel we are having an ok season.

It's not a centre back's job to leave a winger uncontested at a corner to practically place the ball on an attacker's head.
